Sad.
2
he may have been a public drunk and kind of an asshole at times, but he never seemed like an actual threat. still no excuse to shoot the guy.
3
From this King5 story: http://tinyurl.com/2g4dwmq
"The officers are not clearly identified in the patrol car video recordings, but none of them is Officer Birk. His attorney, Ted Buck, told KING 5 that Officer Birk had never met Williams before the incident which led to the shooting."
Even if Williams had threatened other officers in the past, how would Birk have known about it? This Q13 story is pure and utter propaganda.
4
Well, if he was such a threat why didn't those officers kill him in August? the fact that they did not doesn't appear to help Birk's case.
5
I love watching cops get riled up about jaywalkers. Yes, officer, clearly he was jaywalking cause he didn't understand the signs.
6
Is this what you call poisoning the jury pool? What was the phrase for that practice?
7
"I write him a ticket every time I can."

Does this cop think he's serving the public? Pathetic.
8
Look, no one's saying that Williams wasn't a difficult case. He was in the very last stages of wet-brain alcoholism, and frequently didn't even know his own name. He was going to be dead soon regardless. But that still doesn't excuse or even explain the ludicrous overreaction by Birks, gunning him down in the street for nothing.
9
All this does is change the charge from 2nd degree murder to 1st degree murder, as it gives a motive and prior history to the MURDERER IAN BIRK. Williams had made angry remarks to Birk's co-workers, so Birk hunted Williams down and murdered him in cold blood.

See, there's more than one way to look at "the facts".
10
In all of those videos, he appears to be a nuisance at best. For all his yelling and swearing, apparently SPD never learned that while sticks and stones may break your bones, words can never hurt them.

Regardless, these previous examples have no real bearing on whether he was a threat at the time he was shot.
11
This is Fox's vision of the world. You cause problems, say things we don't like, and we get to shoot you. This alleviates all of the responsibility for us (those of us who are in power at least) to need to spend our precious, precious dollars and our slightly less important time and attention on how to actually deal civilly with people who differ from or disturb us. So let's be clear, it's free speech so long as you agree with us, otherwise we get to shoot you. Got that? It's easy and more importantly, cheap.
12
Shameful "reporting"...According to Fox, if you jaywalk, get drunk in public, and slur a threat at a police officer, you deserve to get shot to death.
13
He panhandled me the day before he was shot. I told him I couldn't help and he told me to have a nice day. Perhaps he was belligerent to the cops because they were constantly haranguing him, or maybe he was drunker than usual, I don't know. What I do know is that there's no way that guy was a threat, and I walk around that neighborhood all the time with two small children.
14
So, now Birk is the victim?
15
Birk drew his gun and fired on a downtown street. Setting aside the fact that it was an unjustified killing, if he had missed John Williams, who would he have hit? Isn't firing a gun in a crowded area a much greater threat to public safety than a drunk with a small, closed carving knife?
16
That was less than convincing on the part of Q-13. You would think only the most reactionary jackass would buy it. I'm just seeing some drunk growling away at "The Man". And that comment from the female officer that she "had never been that way to her"? That doesn't mean shit. He's still drunk and barely capable of "moving on" much less being a realistic threat.
17
Murdoc's slimy, prevaricating grasp reaches even into a local Fucks Gnus (née "Fox News") TV station, apparently.
Fucks Network and its Gnus are nothing but giant right-wing death machines, pumping out garbage TV and lies 24 hours a day.

Fuck you, Fucks Gnus & Network.
18
@15, you raise a good point.

I remember reading something- from the SPD's pathetic justification attempts- about how the area was "a known zome for transients, drug users...", or something like that. I was like "Uh, I walk RIGHT PAST that very corner ten days a week walking two/from work." It's not some fucking war zone, it's part of the area between downtown and lower Denney with plenty of non-threatening "regular people" pedestrian traffic. Jeez.
19
Errrrrr, I mean ten times a week.
20
@9 - First degree murder implies deliberation and premeditation. This was a seemingly unnecessary killing, but the aggravating factors that elevate charges to that distinction aren't there in this case.
22
Wow, a Fox affiliate justifying a vigilante murder in the name of law & order.

Color me shocked.
23
@20,

I think Sir Vic knows that. He's using Fox's brand of twisted logic to "prove" premeditated murder.
24
Where was this outpouring of concern and support when Williams really could have used it?
25
He cursed at officers, therefore he deserves to die. Case closed. Next victim.
26
To residents of Seattle proper, getting harassed by a drunken bum isn't that scary, but to the east siders and beyond it is considered a truly horrible scary experience. That's the audience Fox is aiming for.
I'm not a fan of police shootings, drunken bums, or Q13 Fox news...so why am I even commenting?
27
Q13 is awful. Who else remembers when the "News" portion of Q13 came into existence? They had that horrible blond lady, Leslie Something? It was so blatantly obvious that they were a spin organization, KING and KOMO had been doing a fantastic (and respectable) job up til then. It pissed me off so much that people started to like Q13 news, it ruined KING and KOMO.
28
doceb, I swear, I have to repeat this anymore, and I'm gonna start drinking on city streets to harass people! HE HAD HELP, HE WAS OFFERED HELP, HE DID NOT WANT HELP!!!!! And the fact that they're CONSTANTLY harassing him for STUPID SHIT...oh, and Birk DID know damn well who he was, as he'd ARRESTED him before! This is all spin to make it sound like John DESERVED to be savagely murdered on the street! Birk got out of his car WITH HIS GUN DRAWN! HE ESCALATED it into a confrontation over NOTHING!!!!

MY NAME IS RAY MARTIN AND THERE IS WITNESS ACCOUNTS FROM EMPLOYEES AT DICKS DRIVE INN THAQT WITNESSED POLICE OPENING FULL CANS OF BEER AND SPRAYING JOHN T. WILLIAMS IN THE FACE WITH THEM. THEN THEY USED THE AUDIO CLIPS OF HIM GOING OFF ON POLICE TO FURTHER SOLIDIFY THEIR ACCUSATIONS OF HIS DEALINGS WITH OFFICERS UP TO HIS KILLING. HE NEVER MADE A MOVE ON THIS OFFICER AND WITNESSES HAVE ACCOUNTED FOR THAT AND HE WAS SHOT IN THE SIDE AND BAC. NOT THE WOUNDS ASSCOCIATED WITH THE VERSION OF THEIR STORY. I HAVE LINKS TO THE STORY FROM DICKS EMPLOYEES AND I GAVE THAT TO Q13, KING 5, KOMO 4, AND KIRO AND NONE OF THEM HAVE EXPRESSED INTEREST IN RESEARCHING WHAT Q13 HAS ALREADY REPORTED. HOW SAD WOULD IT BE IF THE VERY AUDIO CLIPS SEATTLE POLICE SUBMITTED WAS WHEN THEY WERE SPRAYIN HIM IN THE FACE WITH BEER. I THINK IT WARRANTS SOME RESEARCH AND A RETRACTION. CUZZ OBVIOUSLY NO ONE RESEARCHED THE STORY AT Q13 BEFORE THEY REPORTED IT.

Fox the Fix. Life callously taken away by a coward trigger-happy cop who just wanted to quench his thirst for blood. And Fox calls that justified?

Please wait...
