Then you might as well check the heads of all 10 year old boys. Climbing over a fence to get a ball, without considering any potential consequences of doing so, seems like pretty typical behavior from a 10 year old boy.
@3 - thinking "oh, but that won't happen to ME" is also pretty typical behavior of 10-year-old... well, boys of any age really.
This looks like one instance where the owners of the aggressive dogs is not to blame. If you keep your dogs behind a 6-foot fence and someone climbs the fence, whose fault is it?
My first thought was "Sandlot".... my second was "shit, I wonder if my dogs would know the difference between a kid sneaking into our backyard to get a ball and an actual intruder." I mean, they might be able to tell the difference, but I can't guarantee it. One of them has never been in an "actual danger" scenario, but the other one basically turned into an entirely different dog the one time I was actually threatened, so there's at least some ability to differentiate there...
They could have come to the front door and knocked and asked the residents to retrieve thier ball. To my understanding several people were home... Not the dogs fault. Where was the adult supervision of these children?
Poor dogs. They were protecting their property from an intruder. If the person climbing into the yard was an adult burglar instead of a child going after a ball, the dogs would be considered heroes. They don't know the difference.
@8 GTFO. People like you are why we have no personal accountability in this country. This has nothing to do with parenting skills and everything to do with common sense.
@14 that's pretty much how I see it. Excepting very special circumstances, I don't think that anyone should have a dogs like that, but the other side is that there was a freakin' 6 foot fence. If that doesn't scream stay the fuck out, I don't know what does.
As I watched a child dig into my kitchen drawers last night while her mother watched, I realized that some kids just don't have boundaries and nor do some adults.
This is sad and unfortunate, but this is a situation where the dogs were properly contained (by a fence), but the child was not properly contained (by a parent). I hope the kid recovers, and that next time he'll ask a parent for help before climbing into a strange yard.
@20, Killed? The dog didn't jump the fence and go after the boy, the boy got into his territory. It's too bad he got hurt, and great he survived, but the dogs do NOT deserve in any way to be put down.
A couple of months ago, our dog scared away a guy trying to break into our house in the middle of the night while the whole family was home. She saved us from a scary fucking situation. Note - one reason we got a dog was because I didn't want to buy a gun.
So, yeah, I'm gonna have to side with the dogs on this one.
The dogs were doing their jobs. I assume Animal Control is "observing" them for signs of violent behavior and/or illness, and if neither is present once the ten days are up, they will be returned to their home. As they should be.
I'm glad the kid is all right, but the dogs were doing their jobs.
i don't think the dogs should be punished. and the boy shouldn't have gone in that yard.
but that poor boy. think of the fear of dogs he's gonna have for the rest of his life. no need to punish him for bad behavior. he got his punishment.
Boys will be boys... now tell me why that is a widely used statement. Show me a boy who doesn't push limits, and you are showing me a boy that is comatose. Every single one of us men can recall all those infractions we preformed behind mammas back, oh, we definitely knew better, we KNEW Mother would skin our hides if she found out. But guess what? We did them anyway! I am not saying it was the boy's fault, nor am I saying it is the dog's or even the owner's fault. You people need to stop badmouthing the parents, for I will tell you again, boys will be boys. And if you know no boys nor have ever been a boy, just pop any one of the hundreds of coming of age films, ie: Stand By Me, The Last Mimzy, Home Alone...

You're an asshole and obviously don't (and should NEVER) have kids.
They were going to get their ball, for Chrissakes.

You need to meet more human beings if you believe that.
