What Swiss Banking System?

It died today, as thousands of geeks unleashed their vengeance.

Hmmm. Kind of saw that coming.

@2, Uh, web servers for one bank of many went down. While noble, it's symbolic. No bank in their right mind shares connectivity between things like their web site and things like core functions of banking and routing money.

@2, sound your butt trumpet!

I donated. Please, everyone do this if you care about getting journalists the raw information they need to sift through to do their jobs. Hardly any journalists get paid any more to go hunt this stuff, and many who could instead just link to the shrinking pool of truly original work out there. It's become clear the Wikileaks type of source may be the best way to forcefeed investigative reporters.

Thanks for the link, Anthony.

I donated right before the Swiss pulled the plug on him. I see now it is going through Germany -> Iceland rather than Switzerland -> Iceland. I wonder what will happen to my donation? I think I'll wait a few more days to see if the German connection is stable before trying again.

Donating is what you should do, if you value humanity.

Should Slog create a "WikiLeaks Donor" tag for commenters?

Actually, I donated a while ago, after I saw the http://www.collateralmurder.com video of "American" soldiers murdering innocent Iraqi civilians and Reuters journalists.

I use quotes around the word "American" because no genuine American I know would slaughter people the way I saw those guys doing it... unless, of course, the so-called "American" was a right-wing scumbag or some "tea party" asshole. These mindless robots can't wait for a global social meltdown so they can start killing everybody -- "Kill for Peace!"

At any rate, now that the CIA, TSA, HSA, FBI, GOP, TP and every other group of paranoid wackos in every nation where the U.S. can call in markers is gunning for WikiLeaks, its days are numbered.

Right-wingers all over the world are drooling, anticipating the day when Assange will get his "rendition" and disappear forever into a rat-infested dungeon in some third-world-toilet nation.

MasterCard, Visa Halt WikiLeaks Payments

WikiLeaks

MasterCard and Visa Europe confirmed Tuesday that they will block payments to WikiLeaks.

"MasterCard is currently in the process of working to suspend the acceptance of MasterCard cards on WikiLeaks until the situation is resolved," the company said in a statement.

Visa Europe, a separate and independently operated company from Visa Inc., will do the same. "Visa Europe has taken action to suspend Visa payment acceptance on WikiLeaks' Web site pending further investigation into the nature of its business and whether it contravenes Visa operating rules," the company said in a statement.

At this point, the WikiLeaks donation Web site still lists MasterCard and Visa as viable options for donating via credit card. Datacell Switzerland serves as the site's credit card processing partner. Supporters can also donate via a bank transfer to Germany or Iceland, where WikiLeaks has public bank accounts, or send funds via snail mail.

WikiLeaks editor Julian Assange announced Monday that the Swiss Bank Post Finance has frozen his defense fund and personal assets, and designated him as a "high profile" individual. WikiLeaks and Assange lost $100,000 euro in assets, he said.

"The technicality used to seize the defense fund was that Mr. Assange, as a homeless refugee attempting to gain residency in Switzerland, had used his lawyers address in Geneva for the bank's correspondence," Assange said in a press release.

Last week, PayPal also permanently restricted the account used by WikiLeaks "due to a violation of the PayPal Acceptable Use Policy, which states that our payment service cannot be used for any activities that encourage, promote, facilitate or instruct others to engage in illegal activity," the company said. Assange said that move resulted in WikiLeaks losing another $60,000 euro.

One thing Assange can't use his funds for is bail. On Tuesday, he was arrested in London on charges of rape. He was denied bail and will remain in custody until at least December 14.

Editor's Note: This story was updated at 1:15pm Eastern time with comment from Visa Europe.

Although VISA canceled WikiLeaks payments, this transaction appears to have gone through. It hasn't posted yet but it's not flagged for "review" or anything unusual.

Please wait...
