I've always assumed the Chinese factory owners who manufacture Prada, etc., keep some of the production for themselves. It's not like the name-brand stuff is especially well made these days.

What this story reminds me of is when Balloon Boy and his dopey dad were being interviewed on TV, and BB spills the beans, "Um, you told me [the hoax] was for our [reality] show."
