Murkowski's spokesperson today: “Sen. Murkowski will support a stand-alone repeal of the DADT law. With the tax package out of the way, and legislation to fund the government on a glide path to passage, Sen. Murkowski will vote to move to DADT when it is brought to the floor.”

But keep that pressure up.

I don't understand the math.
The dems + indies = 59
minus the WV asshat 1

equals 58 votes
plus the 2 Maine women

equals 60 votes.... no??!!!

is there another dem not voting besides the WV DINO?
3
@2 Burris was replaced by Kirk a few weeks ago, meaning that the Democratic caucus is down to 58. Minus Manchin in WV, that puts them at 57 for DADT.

57 + 2 Maine + Either Brown or Murkowski = 60
4
Having it both ways? Are they bi-sexual.

All kidding aside Murkowski has said she supports the repeal of DADT.

Scott Brown campaigned as being pro-gay marriage so he should support the repeal of DADT. He's up for re-election in 2012 having been elected to fill out the late Ted Kennedy's term.
5
@2: "58 votes plus the 2 Maine women" is the worst porn title ever.
6
When I called one of my home Senators last week, the staffer I talked to asked for my ZIP Code. They try to determine if you're actually calling from the state the Senator represents, and can ask any number of questions to ascertain if you're a fake.
7
@2: Dem caucus down to 58 members now that Mark Kirk of Illinois replaced Burris.
8
@4: Scott Brown has not ever supported gay marriage. He claims to support civil unions but calls the issue in Massachusetts "settled."
9
OMG!
Is it poszzzzzzzzzzzzz.............
10
@8

Be that as it may he's still up for re-election in 2012. A no vote on DADT would be used against him in liberal Massachusetts.
11
As an Illinoisan, I'm wondering if there's progress to be made with Kirk. Against a likable Democrat, he'd probably lose reelection in Illinois, and this could be a good way to boost his "I'll do what my constituents want" cred.
12
Blue State Reps that are up for re-election in 2012 (Snowe, Brown, and Kirk) need to be convinced that this vote will kill their re-election chances. Particularly Mark Kirk; If it fails by one vote, and votes against it as he promised, then he needs to be outed mercilessly. If a reward is offered to any of Kirk's former boyfriends or tricks that is larger than their hush money, I would donate to that cause.

My fear is that Red State Dems (like Ben Nelson) who voted for repeal when it was couched in a face-saving defense bill might balk at a standalone repeal. They need your encouragement as well.
13
Word is that they have the 60 they need.
14
Can't speak for the whole firm, but I can say that a lot of the associates at my office are calling Sen. Brown's office today.
15
Just did my Mass-resident duty and called Sen. Brown. Since I'm currently in Europe, that was an extremely expensive phone call, but it was worth it. I reminded my Mom and sister to call, too.

An aside: more detail means more attention. Consider mentioning what town you're from, if you're a student or a father or whatever. A good quarter of the interns on the Hill come from my university - there's a formula to what gets passed along, and personalization and volume of calls are the factors that make an impact.
16
Good news. The DOD just really wants this to happen as soon as possible. I talked to a Marine from Texas last week (that seems like EXACTLY the demographic McCain keeps clinging to as the ones who won't be able to do their jobs with homos) who said, "come on, we've all served with people we know are gay, they just can't be open about it. The important thing is whether they do their jobs well."
17
If you want to pretend you're from Massachussetts to Scott Brown's office, just say "Queeahs can suck theah cahks as much as they wahnt, they have a right to serve! Voting against a repeahl of DADT is wicked retahded."
18
Wicked good comment, BrandonC...
19
I'm in Massachusetts and I just called Brown.
20
Just wanted to say that I made my call to Scott Brown, and if you are reading this and not sure if you should, if it will help, etc. just pick up the phone, it doesn't take long. If you don't, and they vote against the repeal, you'll always wonder: "maybe if I had called..."
21
Kirk just got elected to a full term in Illinois. (Kirk's seat was Obama's, who would just now be finishing up his first term in the Senate if he hadn't been elected President.) Kirk's next election is in 2016. But you could contact him anyway.

Ahem, Congress does have caller ID.
23
If you believe this, I've got an estate tax cut for Billionaires to sell you.

Oh, wait, that was what they traded for ...
24
@10: I would've thought that liberal Massachusetts wouldn't've voted the idiot in in the first place. Somehow, I think he'd still manage reelection even if he does vote against repealing DADT.
I hope that this Scott Brown issue will really hammer it home never to depend on Massachusetts -- we already had health care laws (Ted Kennedy's seat being filled by a Republican was an issue for that federal health care thing) and we have gay marriage and gay rights and so on.
But I called his office anyway.
25
Called. Emailed. Done.

Please wait...
