Well there was this "compromise" on the tax bill, Republicans got everything they wanted for 2 years, in exchange for letting Democrats put several critical bills up for a vote. The Republicans wouldnt welch on that deal would they?
@5 if the Senate approves the House bill then Obama can in theory sign and kill DADT the same day. So, if Reid manned up and called a vote at 1pm today, and it passed by 130pm, then Obama in theory could be ending DADT by dinner today. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
The house passed it yesterday. If the senate passes it, then Obama will sign it. Once signed, the repeal will NOT be implemented immediately. It allows the pentagon to phase it in over time so that they can change their recruitment policies, training for troops, housing issues, and etcetera. There is no set deadline, but I imagine the military will take a year or so to fully deal with it, once passed.
@5 Yes. It's passed the House, so it just needs to pass Senate. Then the president signs it into law. Theoretically, the president could refuse to sign it (in which case it then depends on if the vote's high enough in Congress to override), or even do a pocket veto (where he simply doesn't sign it in, and the session is dissolved before they can force the overriding vote -- Bush loved these). But Obama is expected to sign it.
@6 Yes, theoretically could happen today. It all depends on when it comes up for Senate vote. I don't know. Things are moving pretty quickly.
I wonder, though. What the hell happened to ENDA? Make no mistake, I love that DADT is on the verge of being repealed, but ENDA would be of benefit to civilians as well as military...
I don't understand why they aren't voting today. If you have the votes, it seems crazy to wait for a later date, by which time wishy washy senators may have changed their minds. Do it now, get it in front of the president, get at least one thing DONE.
I'm not willing to bet one Reid getting it through one way or the other, but I will bet ANY amount of money that Obama will sign if it passes. Totally serious. You interested?
Not quite.

So it would end, but not tomorrow.
