I hate to use facts with you, but you are delving into Barnett territory, Savage. Stating things does not make them true.
The most recent polling that I've seen shows a strong plurality of voters support the tunnel. The takeaway from that poll, however, is that Seattlelites do NOT want the surface street option.
The people who oppose the tunnel are more likely to attend these debates, the people who are in favor of moving forward and getting this shit done are tired of debates, and will choose to stay home and watch The Biggest Loser or some other such tripe rather than listen to more of the same crap that has been bantered about for the past several YEARS. I don't think your sampling would pass scrutiny in Stats 101, Savage.
Why do we need a tunnel when we've got this great Monorail system for all our public transit throughout the cit-
...oh, that's right. I live in Seattle. We can't just make a fucking decision, go with it (yes, for better or worse -- that's how real life is lived), and then just fucking move on to the next problem that needs solving.
This is why McGinn is one of my favorite politicians ever. Unlike most of the left, he understands that political capital is a depreciating asset, and that if you don't use it, it goes to waste.
I think it's essential for the bankrupt State and the bankrupt City to spend a *huge* amount of money on a low-capacity tunnel adjacent to Elliott Bay, an area certain to be hit by a major -- possibly catastrophic -- earthquake sometime soon, so that public works contractors and labor unions can kick back contributions and other payoffs to the politicians who support the project. [Sarcasm off.] I'm all in favor of job-boosting public works projects during recessions, but the public works have to make good economic sense. I'm not convinced the tunnel does.
McGinn is a hypocrit who changed his opinion for just long enough to get elected and then right after changed back. It was amazingly brazen in a world of hypocritical politicians. He deserves no respect.
Build the damn tunnel and move the fuck on. Oh, and a lot of Seattle does want the tunnel Dan, including some of your faithful readers.
No Damn Tunnel!
No Damn Tunnel!
It may not be quite as many as he thought he'd have at this point, but it's still a lot. I'm sure he won't let it get him down.

sigh!
Pot-kettle.
Iraq War? GOOD!
Seattle Commons? BAD!
Right about that, wrong about the war.
