Well.... They're a LITTLE bit cooler. But yeah. Pretty much.
2
And goggles.

Daniel steampunk: for goths who prefer earth tones. (Wed, 03 Nov 2010 21:10:27 GMT)

Great minds think alike or fools never differ?
4
Don't let the Brown Coats hear you say that...
5
I lol'd
6
I've heard that quote before somewhere else.
7
Yeah, Chris, this is more of a Deep Quote. This has been around for a while.
8
Um, thank you, Cherie Priest?
9
@4 Eh, I just brushed it off. Maybe if it was Unification Day, but nah, there's bigger fish to fry in this 'verse.
10
It was a criticism leveled at Cherie Priest by Charles Stross. He also objects to zombies.
11
Steampunks are cool.
12
Zombies are green. Or at best, grey.
13
i see someone discovered yourscenesucks.com
14
There are no steampunks, there are only kids who think they're steampunks. It's a meta-movement at best. You know you're in trouble when the D&D and Cosplay nerds make fun of your almost-subculture.
15
Perhaps @14, but the Steampunk kids do tend to be more nattily attired...
16
And distressed metal. They like bolts and hinges.
17
No. Steampunks are just hipsters in period wear.
18
I don't think so. (Or: I think not.)

Goths seem to have a whole edgy angsty depressed aura going on.

Steampunk is more like Edwardian costuming with a twist. No angsty depression required.

Both are a bit peculiar, sure, but Steampunk is more fun.
19
@17 But maybe hipsters are just goths who like colors?

*Full disclosure: I actually consider myself a goth.*

cf. Charles Stross "steampunk is nothing more than what happens when goths discover brown" from http://www.antipope.org/charlie/blog-sta…
21
Except they're skinnier, more pretentious, richer, and their music sucks.
22
@21 Which ones? :p

In October, I think it was, I heard a paraphrased version of this quote from William Gibson, who said he heard it from Cherie Priest, who attributed it to some friend on Twitter, who said she didn't remember where she'd heard it but she hadn't made it up.

True story.
24
Cherie herself posted it as a quote of Jess Nevins long before Stross "quoted" her in his criticism of her book: http://www.tor.com/blogs/2009/10/hello-a…

Steampunk is a reaction to disposable electronics we can't tinker with and the dominance of smooth plastic-encased machines whose inner workings are all hidden. People have started to crave gears, rust, grease, and steam.

Sorry to get all Mudede here, but I've seen it this way for quite some time. I have no use for steampunk myself, though. I mourn for the space age.
27
Making fun of steampunk is so 2009, whereas making fun of hipsters never gets old.
28
"Breaking" news? People were making that comment about Steampunk back in 2008, if not earlier. You need to get out more.
29
Read @14 in Comic Book Guy voice. It's perfect.

Please wait...
