This story's just weird to me, because something's fucked-up. "Hoss" Hussain founded Wild Oats; I know this because iit happened here in Denver about eight blocks away from me, and I was here at the time. Never heard of this wanker.

I wish food were less morally charged.

Brilliant fucking analysis, Charles.

@ 1, I'm pretty sure Wild Oats was started in Boulder, not Denver. Aren't you thinking of Alfalfa's (later merged with Wild Oats)?

Anyway, Sunflower Market sucks, except for the produce section which really is impressive. Otherwise they combine the old Wild Oats' limited selection with prices that would make Whole Paycheck blush.

Matt, I don't think so . . . but maybe. It's been a fucking shell game. All I really know for sure is that I miss Rainbow Grocery (the precursor to them all) at Colfax and York.

@ 5, me too. I used to go there at lunch (when I was going to East High) and get non-alcoholic beer and Corrs soda (before those fuckers at Coors sued them out of existence)...

When I was in high school, I worked at an ice cream shop owned by a guy who was arrested for child pornography (making & distributing), and child molestation. More than 50 charges in all, I think.

That is completely unrelated to the morality of eating ice cream.

Good point, @7.

Why not just avoid any subsidiary of Whole Foods because the owners are reactionary libertarian asshats who screw over their employees with gleeful abandon. If you're going to spend tons of money for good stuff, don't forget who first put the "PC" in PCC. Or is it just verboten to consider anything but supply and demand?

Please wait...
