Ahhhhhhh, welcome to the exotic Orient.
2
Gee, they got rid of despotic asshole and replaced him with a military dictatorship...who could have seen this coming?
3
I'm a female, and about as liberal as they come, and I feel CBS should be ashamed for sending a blonde (Read: obviously American or at least western) female reporter into that madness.
I thought similar thoughts when I heard Anderson Cooper had been attacked. But a woman? Into a country that has an open culture of female oppression?
Yes, women have equal rights here, and yes, she should have a crack at all of the "big" stories, but this one was just careless.
4
Why? Because Arab men can't contain themselves at the sight of a blond white woman? Sorry, Jim Crow called, he wants his racist stereotypes back.
5
Sorry, DanFan, but that's not fair. Lara Logan is a VERY experienced war correspondent, and she is the perfect person to report on the story. Its shocking and sad that this happened to her and I'm sure that her security and crew are devastated that this happened to her and the situation got beyond their control. If she didn't want to be there, she wouldn't have been - but she's been in much worse areas, so I'm sure she knew that the possibility of being harmed were there. It speaks more to the situation in this area of the world that a woman, during not a time of violent protest but during a celebration, can be treated this way. The Arab world has a long way to go in how they perceive and treat women.
6
Absolutely awful. But before we condemn an entire culture based on the reprehensible actions of a mob, I can unfortunately point anyone to some very similar, terrible stories that have happened in our own back yards.
7
@5 All appropriate caveats aside, given the trouble that Logan got into in Iraq (http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/world/t…) I'm not sure that we should call her "the perfect person" for this situation.

8
@7 Logan's personal life (in this case likely overblown into tabloid fodder) has nothing to do with her beating and rape in Egypt. She's a highly qualified war correspondent who's put a lot of effort into getting stories about the Iraq war into the US news when editors didn't want to run them. Incidentally the article you linked to is in the Australian equivalent of FoxNews.

@8
A) I didn't say that had anything to do with the assault.
B) Her affairs were widely covered. I picked that link at random from a large selection.
C) I mostly just personally find her reporting philosophy distasteful after reading her response to the Michael Hasting article. What happened to her was atrocious. That doesn't make her an ideal reporter.
10
@7

Fuck you.
11
Apparently an NYU Fellow, Nir Rosen, has been saying some pretty terrible things about her including saying he can find some humor in small things.

The issue is not whether or not she is a good reporter. The issue is that she was attacked by a mob of men. (Luckily other women were around who were able to eventually help her along with the police.)

Men.
13
Nice, dirge. From "reporter attacked and sexually assaulted" to "buxom", "blonde", and "homewrecker" in 7 posts.

Yes, it's right there in your link.
14
@9: Are you trying to argue that she deserved it, or was somehow asking for it? Or are you just noting that the victim was not, in fact, a perfect and flawless person? Why not just come out and say what your point is, and why you think it's relevant?
15
@12: ...for the 5% of Americans who know that Egypt is in Africa. That said, it did nothing to help the Middle East's image with most people, or Asia's image among Fox News viewers.
16
Now now, let's not fly off the handle. People are just trying to point out that many rapes are preventable if the victims would just avoid being female in the presence of men.
17
I think women are generally much safer walking around Egypt than they are in the States. Considering that the protesters seem to have been responsible for instigating little of the violence and that the cops who were responsible for most of the bloodshed also targeted reporters--not to mention that rape is a common method of police torture of prisoners there, I wouldn't be surprised if Logan was attacked by Mubarak supporters.
18
I didn't mean that as a WOMAN she was somehow less qualified. I meant that as a BLONDE she was obviously WESTERN and with the raging anti-American sentiment amongst Mubarak supporters (who were LOSING) it made her a obvious target.
Not to mention that sexual assault against female reporters is not even a new thing there.
So, @4, you can point your "you're a racist" gun somewhere else, you simpleton.
19
And yes, @17- I was implying that she was attacked by Mubarak supporters. Maybe I should have been more clear about that point. I thought it was obvious.
20

What a beautiful culture of treating women like possessions.

Why are we rooting for them?
21
The first time I saw her reporting from the middle east I thought 'Oh Oh, she's in for trouble".

Please wait...
