Freedom is universal. The leaders, the smart ones, will embrace freedom. The selfish will kill their own people to stay in power. But it always be an uneasy power because the people will know what they want and will never cease knowing. But they will know what is standing in the way of their freedom. The internet cannot be stopped. Not really. And now people will see what they are missing.

You're making the mistake of conflating all these countries together.

WHAT internet in Yemen? They barely have it. The average income is $2,000, and most earn far less than that. They have NOTHING, even cell phones are largely out of their grasp. What they have is TV.

Bahrain, like the Emirates, is a kingdom, with literally a large roomful of rich people with internet and a seething mass of poor people with nothing at all, and nothing in between. The protesters in Bahrain are not motivated by fucking Twitter.

Egypt's about twice as rich as Yemen, per capita, but again hugely stratified. The number of people with internet access is extremely low, I'll bet fewer than 1 in a 100 have it.

Iran is a bit different; Iran is a developed industrial country with an income level twice that of Egypt. Iran, despite their kook religious government and extreme isolation, is economically more like Turkey than it is Egypt. They have a middle class.

Saudi's middle class is completely bought off with massive social programs. Their protesters are more likely to be individual suicide bombers (or Al Qaeda soldiers) than street protesters.

But there is a universal standard now for what freedom is. The freedom to elect the leaders the people, all the people, choose. The freedom to believe as one chooses. The freedom from corruption. And the freedom to learn, which involves the freedom to teach as well. These are things the people in these countries lack in common. And they are not too stupid or too poor to know this.
If the internet was the great library at Alexandria of today, it would pose a threat to these very leaders and would be destroyed.

Please wait...
