@1 no, poor hobbits

@2, I think Will in Seattle might be able to offer some insight into how it's all connected- he's published down there after all.
6
I feel a little bad about saying that.
7
Poor things. Hopefully, they get those trapped beneath the rubble out quickly.

I'm not trolling..but am I the only person who hears someone speaking in Arabic when they scroll through Slog? I'm weirded out if this is an isolated incident...
9
Did somebody forget to destroy the ring again?

This is much worse than the earthquake of September 2010. This new one was much closer to the surface.

A friend lives in Christchurch and said her partner saw people's heads being crushed by the falling bricks of the cathedral in the street. My god.

The voice is from a video on the SLOG page that plays automatically when one reloads the page. It's a video from Egypt giving support to the unions in Wisconsin.

I'm sure when we get details we'll see that the majority of the fatalities came from unreinforced masonry (falling bricks etc). NZ apparently has pretty good seismic building standards, but there are a lot of older buildings and they are very expensive to retrofit.

Only a matter of time in Seattle folks, get prepared...

@12 there are a few buildings which have collapsed, not all old ones either. The damage is much more extensive than the September quake especially in the CBD. Its been a horrible day all in all.

homosexuals' heads being crushed by the falling bricks of the cathedral......

Luckily Kiwis are proud members of the great Western civilization so will know better than to shit in their own drinking water supply.
17
@5 not really.

Kind of a shame about the church, though, I remember visiting it.

65 dead at last count, the airport's still ok.

It will happen here at some point. But everywhere you live has risks.

@17, You enjoy ticking off Fnarf, don't you.

@Alleged, You are so Christ-like in your comportment.

Email from a friend of mine in Christchurch:
Yes we are all ok but there is absolute chaos around the city. After the Sept earthquake and subsequent 5000 aftershocks we were feeling that things were starting to get back to normal. Although the earthquake was not as big as the Sept one but it was a lot shallower and so more violent. We were so happy that in Sept no one died but as I speak to you the reports are not great and they seem to think that up to 200 may have died. It’s a surreal situation and everyone is in shock. As it struck at lunch time the city was busy and schools were in. As I type this more aftershocks are happening, most people have no power, water / fuel sewage etc.

@14-@16: Nothing like death and disaster to create the opportunity for a little racist and homophobic trolling. You are a worthless piece of shit.

Please wait...
