Regarding the state trooper who parked in a disabled-only parking space: why doesn't he have to pay the fine? How are we to get our cops to understand that they are not above the law, if we allow them to...well...be above the law? How bout a poll, asking if police should pay fines when they break the law, or if some vague "training" is in order?

Trust me, having to sit through some stupid-assed training class will bother the guy more than paying a fine would.

Elizabeth Taylor: truly the end of an era. The last movie star. It's funny, I thought her passing would be a bigger deal than this. A national day of mourning. She was truly legendary both on screen and off. Even her many, many terrible movies are largely terrible because they weren't big enough to contain her.

We just watched "Secret Ceremony" with Mia Farrow and Robert Mitchum, directed by Joseph Losey, which is is ridiculous and marvelous in equal measure. Farrow plays a crazy woman, in that special sixties filmic kind of crazy, whose recently deceased mother looked just like Taylor, whom she sees getting off a bus, and stalks, and invites home for some melodramatic nude bathing and costume trying-on. Taylor BECOMES her mother, at least until sinister Mitchum shows up. It's kitsch through and through, but you can't take your eyes off her.

"Zee and Co.", from 1972, about a love triangle between her, Michael Caine and Susannah York, is another classic we saw recently for the first time. Taylor rips the screen to shreds trying to get at Caine, her husband, who almost holds his own against her, playing the Burton part against her fury.

One only has to compare the dreary "relationships" of the modern stars, like the tiresome business about whether Jennifer Aniston still carries a torch for Brad Pitt [snore], or whether Brad and Angelina are adopting another baby [snooze] with Burton and Taylor, to see how impoverished Hollywood is today. Stars today don't know how to TALK, let alone command the screen like Elizabeth Taylor. Some might say "chew", and prefer today's more naturalistic brand of boredom, but Taylor, oh my GOD what a presence.

Who else is left who was a top star in the 1940s? Who else is left who could match her at the height of her powers, in the 1950s, in "Butterfield 8", "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf", "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof", "Suddenly Last Summer", "Giant"?

Was she the best actress who ever lived? Probably not. Was the biggest movie star? Yes, absolutely. Who can top her? Katherine Hepburn? Greta Garbo? Joan Crawford? I don't think so. And today's biggest names, like Sandra Bullock, Angelina Jolie, and Julia Roberts, don't even belong on the list.

Rest in peace, ma'am. We'll never see the likes of you again.

You know you're a big ole homo if you clap during Dark Lady

Based on the low frame rate and static backgrounds, the Scooby Doo animators must have taken on some after hours work.

Well said, Fnarf.

Can anyone explain the Republicans suddenly being concerned about unconstitutional use of force? When have Republicans ever objected to bombing ANYONE? Between that and the French leading the charge, bombing-wise, my frames of reference are dropping like flies...
10
@9,
I can explain it:

Current Republican Goals:
1. Oppose everything Obama does. Everything.
2. See goal #1.

And in Illinois news, a bill that would have allowed adoption workers to refuse to work with any potential adoptive parents whose religious opinions they didn't like (read as: gays and atheists) got beat down. Yay us!

@4 Maybe Hamas should stop bombing Israel and using it's own citizens as human shields?
13
@11:

Although I can easily imagine circumstances where that law, had it passed, could have come back to bite conservatives in their flabby, pasty-white asses - assuming there are any Gay Atheists working in the IL Dept. of Children & Family Services, that is.
14
@3 Believe what you like but really nobody cares about baby Joseph but you. I am actually kind of surprised that your specious campaign has allowed you to align with the forces propagating Islamic water-head brats.

We totally get that no one on Slog gives a shit about Joseph.
That's the kind of place Slog is....

@14 Nobody in the world gives a shit about Joseph. Except maybe his parents and a phony like you.
19
Oh and you're just pretending to care.
20
18 you're talking to yourself again did you sell your meds to the frat boys?
21
@20. What? As far as zingers go that one gets a zero. Like your personality.

Please wait...
