The fact is, media consolidation has been going on since Reagan, to where a few companies control the vast majority of news you're allowed to access. Yeah, FOX is a stupid dog-and-pony show, but it also distracts people away from the more insidious re-framing, censoring news outlets, makes them appear more legitimate.

I love Jon Stewart. Besides being funny as all shit, he's probably one of the most important people, either on TV or in society in general, for tearing people new, well-deserved assholes.

As for "mainstream media," too much of it is degenerating from newsfotainment to purely personality-based punditainment. The absolute proof of this is The Daily Show making more sense than anything on Fox, and half of the stuff everywhere else.

Al Jazeera English, Democracy Now!, BBC World Service, those are mainstream media, if by "mainstream" you mean fact-related (christ, I really wish that's what mainstream meant). CNN, MSNBC & FOX are just fucking theater.
