So, if Cliff had instead been voicing anti-abortion sentiments in his weather segments, and though KUOW had asked him to stop he kept on doing it, you all would still back his right to do so, right?

Be honest, now.
2
Steve Scher is, without a doubt, the worst interviewer on-air in Seattle right now. It's often painful to listen to interviewees deal with his bumbling, ignorance, and awkward pacing. I'd fire him in a second.
3
No joke option? What kind of a poll is this?
4
Where can we buy Boycott KUOW t-shirts?
5
This is a very satisfying poll.
6
"See you at the gym" is not a good way to conclude an e-mail where you end a twenty-year business relationship. What a cock!
7
Steve and his producer have been total douches about this. I've lived in Seattle since 2004 and have contributed every year to KUOW with a matching donation from my employer ever since. I'll be shifting all of my NPR donations to KPLU moving forward.
8
i think steve scher is awful, and would vote for him to be fired in a heartbeat. but, in this case it does seem that cliff mass was asked to stick to the weather during his segment. he could have been included in other discussions and given an opportunity to voice his opinion in the designated forums.
9
You should post or link to Cliff Mass's response if your going to post Scher's letter.

10
...and I should edit myself better.
11
@1, Cliff Mass is not an expert in abortion. The opinions Cliff Mass shares during his segment regarding education are from significant experience and expertise as an educator. The opinions he presents are not political. There are quantitative measurements of textbooks and education available.
13
I like Steve Scher but he's totally contradicting himself in this letter. Weekday is an opinion show where guests aren't allowed to voice their opinion... say what?
14
Fuck steve scher. Replace him with Mr. Mass.
15
Also, I can see both sides of the story. Cliff being all "You can't tell me what to say and do." And, Steve being all "Its my show, you need to do what I tell you. And Cliff being all "Nuh uh, its my segment, and people love me. Plus, these topics are important to me." And Steve being all, "But, they love me more. And, I'm the boss." And Cliff being all "I don't care. I do what I want." And Steve being all "You're fired! See you at the gym. :-D"
16
@12 Yep like that.
17
Consider this:

Let's say The Stranger hired someone to write a guest column about marijuana. But instead of writing about pot, the person started promoting an anti-gay agenda. Would the stranger really tolerate this? No, they wouldn't. They would use their editorial judgement relieve the columnist of their duties. Think about it.
18
That e-mail from Scher was the most odious, snotty, amateurish, ham-fisted thing I've ever seen. Peeee-yew.
19
@1, Apples and Oranges.

Pro/anti-abortion opinions have nothing whatsoever to do with weather. Math and science education have everything to do with meteorology. He is eminently qualified to talk about math, science, and education, but can claim no expertise on the subject of abortion.

If I just want to listen to someone read a simple weather forecast for 10 seconds, I can get that on any radio or TV station in the city, or on any news or weather website, or an app on an iPhone, etc. Cliff Mass talks more broadly about meteorology, and the science behind it. And he does it in a way that is reasonably understandable to us non-scientists. That is why he is so much more valuable than some news reader telling me if it will rain or not today. If he veers off a little and talks a bit more broadly about math, science, or education, I'm totally okay with that.

KUOW was stupid to drop him.
20
I didn't even know Cliff Mass was on Sher's show, as I turn off the radio anytime his voice comes on. He is insipid. My cat could do a more interesting and informative interview than him. I am perplexed at why he is on the air.
21
@ 20
Meow. Am I hired?
22
I so, so, so wish the results of this poll were binding.
23
@21 you can replace Joni "Eastside" Balter.
24
Further evidence that Steve Scher is The Worst.
25
Yes, this poll should totally be binding.
26
Now you can join this FB page-

You can also go to the KUOW page and let them know what you think.
27
this saddens me deeply.
28
I don't get it -- you all HATE Steve Scher, but you listen to a guy who is on Steve Scher's show? How does that work? Do you have some crazy high tech radio that comes on only when Cliff Mass is on, and then shuts itself off when Steve Scher starts talking again?

Personally, I hate Steve Scher and, therefore, never listen to his show no matter what it's about (isn't that logical?), so I didn't even know Cliff Mass was part of his show. And so I do not care about this one way or the other.
29
@28 Yah, it's called a podcast.
30
I thought Scher's letter was dumb but at least pointed the way towards providing another venue for discussion of topics more broad than the weather. 'Course, this could've been done easily by expanding or relaxing what was already there.

Playing devil's advocate -- I wonder what, if any, personally caustic relationships might exist between Mass, Scher, and the producer(s). I've heard from several sources, entirely independently of each other, that Cliff is a dick to be around. It's possible they just didn't want to deal with him anymore.
31
I have no idea who either of these two are, but I'm surprised that there's a debate about whether someone should have been fired when they'd refused to follow their boss' orders on multiple occasions.
32
I'm surprised at the number of people who would stop supporting the entire station over one decision, on one show. Seems like throwing the baby out with the bathwater.
33
Not generally a fan of public radio, but their editorial voice is their editorial voice, not his. The bit about journalistic ethics is laughable, though. He's an outside expert.

I like his blog and he should absolutely do a podcast. Scientists doing outreach and being a voice in their community is incredibly important.
34
I love Cliff Mass. Weekday is generally interesting and has good content. Unlike most of you, I don't have very much issue with Steve's interviewing style/technique.

All I can say is, I wish them both best of luck. The nice thing about the 21st century media landscape of today that everyone who has something valuable to say can do so. Broadcast media days are so over.

Steve has the right to take control of his program and set editorial policy. Cliff has the right to refuse to play by the rules. It's a breakup, and I'm too mature to take a side. If Weekday and Steve dies because of this, so be it. If Cliff is as beloved as I think he is, he'll land somewhere just fine, saying what he wants to say.
35
I've listened to Steve over the years, and have also listened to his guest Cliff, and thoroughly enjoying "Weekday". I like Steve Scher, and it is Steve's show.

So there you go, Do what you think is best Steve, that's one of the reasons why I listen. I am sure this is a creative approach to maintaining Cliff's presence and commentary on KUOW. I look forward to whatever new segment or situation you all will create.
36
Steve and Cliff should duke it out by taking a math-based test:

1) Differential equations
2) Adding fractions
3) Multiplying fractions
4) Long division
5) Ti-83 programming battle
37
While I loved Cliff's segment, it's refreshing to see some journalistic standards enforced. @30 I've also heard that Cliff can be an arrogant prick.

We love you, Mr. Mass!
40
@22 SLOG polls have always been binding.
41
@32- There are several good publicly supported stations in Seattle. If KUOW makes bad programing decisions KPLU and KEXP should be rewarded for not being stupid.
42
Here's a copy of my email to KUOW:

As a long-time listener and contributer to KUOW, I was extremely disappointed to hear that Steve Scher has "fired" Cliff Mass from his weekly Friday weather segment.

Are you folks crazy or what? Cliff Mass provides depth and insight that is missing from your show and you get rid of him because he expresses an opinion every once in a while?

I have been reluctant to support KUOW financially ever since you stopped broadcasting Science Friday (which fortunately is still available by podcast), and after this latest step I don't know if I'll ever want to send you money again. Good luck trying to convince me that it will be well spent.
43
@41 Well, KEXP is a different animal altogether. I do see your point, but it just seems really capricious to completely withhold support because you don't agree with *one* decision. It seems like any institution is likely to make decisions you don't agree with at some point. I guess if you see it as a continuing pattern that does not reflect your values, it makes sense, but if it's just one instance, it makes more sense to me to voice your opinion as a member, not entirely denounce the station altogether. And really, I think other stations should be rewarded for what they do right, not what other stations do wrong *in one instance*.

As far as Cliff Maas goes, I have to say that the few times I've caught his segment, I *wanted* to be interested, but I would usually find myself drifting off, eventually changing the station. It's too bad they didn't try to find a forum for him to express his non-weather-related opinions, or get a feel for what the listeners were looking for in his segments.
44
"See you at the gym". F'n hilarious!
45
@43- KEXP's local news show on Saturday mornings provides so much more interesting and useful information than Steve Scher can generate in a week. I wouldn't say it's an entirely different animal.
46
re: baby and bathwater. The baby is a caustic, alien carbuncle. The water a dew from the eyelashes of baby Jesus. So you are half right.
47
@45-- Okay, KEXP has *one* local news show. The rest of their programming is music. That is their mission and focus. KUOW's focus is news and information entirely, with just a couple of music shows. Seems pretty different on the whole to me.
48
Regarding the Steve Scher bashing...how many people do you know who do up to ten interviews per week, each an hour long, on a huge variety of subjects? For the most part, I think he does an awesome job of showing interest in and knowledge of all the subjects that his shows cover. I think he has a really hard job and does it well. KUOW is completely in the right to decide what they broadcast. As Steve pointed out in his email, the station has other venues that are appropriate for Cliff to elaborate on his non-weather-related views. The station hired him to provide a weather segment, and that's what he should be doing.
49
I agree with @48. I also think Steve Sher does an awesome job interviewing, considering the scope of the topics all week long. His producer does an exceptional job getting interesting people on. I think he asks intelligent questions, and I've wondered if the reason Sloggers hate him is because he's not a shock jock. He doesn't stir up fights with his interviewees. How boring! I've also heard what @30 and 37 said. And as great and entertaining that Cliff Mass is, when he's speaking to groups in person, you can feel his ego and arrogance. I can easily imagine he would be hard to work with. Steve's emails? Less than wonderful.
50
@48, @49, you've apparently never heard other public radio stations in other markets. When interesting people go on tour pushing their new book, they end up on public radio stations all around the country on Weekday-like shows. Listen to the same author on KUOW and WNYC or Minnesota Public Radio or KQED and then maybe you'll understand why people find Steve Sher so incredibly incompetent.
51
Years ago I thought Steve Scher was a very awkward interviewer and I still don't know why he has to lead in every show with the same Elvis Costello "What's So Funny 'Bout.." riff. Last year, James Fallows: "Do you really play that every day? Really?" These days he's much more skilled, informed on topics and asks great questions. This whole thing must be personal. Every Wednesday Vaughn Palmer calls in to deliver the "news" from Canada - if only it were just that. His squeaky, see-saw voice (sorry, it's annoying) cranking out his own insider-flavored commentary, regarding politics, scandal, crime, sports, etc. So why the double-standard? Smells like a piddle contest,
52
Cliff Mass was asked to stay on topic, he didn't so he wasn't asked back. He didn't have a contract with KUOW, there was no commitment on either side.
53
Good point, @50. True. I'll look them up. I guess it's just that he's a more competent interviewer than I would be! Not saying much, of course, but I still like the program. Good point, too, about the agents of the interesting people doing the booking, not so much the producer.
54
Why would Mass want to stay on Weekday if he wasn't welcome? The easy answer is to give him his own segment, ala birdnote.
55

Steve Sher's interviews are more about giving himself air time than allowing the
guest the air time. I have been distressed for some time by Sher's lack of directness
when asking questions...an example of his interviewing style might look something like this: "So, are you saying that black is white or vice versa or am I missing something here like
your definition of black and white? I would assume that you're not saying that but I just
want to be clear on where you stand on this issue since there has been some controversy
about your views in the past on this subject. So, I'm asking whether you're saying that
black is white, or are you saying that white is black, or is are you saying that there is
possibly an alternative view that you're espousing that we have not considered as we
explore this issue?"

Steve, the question should be simple: "Do you believe that black is white?" You don't
need to try to anticipate how the guest will answer by giving all possible alternatives
to the answer in the question.
56
Scher is one of the most inept interviewers I've encountered. My favorite bit is when he asks as question, then interrupts the guest to make a stupid joke about how poorly phrased his question was. EVERY FUCKING TIME.

I'm not surprised to find out he's a total dick in person as well as on-air.
57
I agree with 55. If Scher didn't 'um' so much, there'd be plenty of time for actual engagement.

To whom it should concern,

I am a contributor who has been listening to KUOW for about half a century. I see the open and intelligent dialog it provides as vital to everything from quality entertainment to the public education pivotal in resolving problems whose increasing gravity has mirrored our increasing power to reshape everything around us. In a media desert bereft of the dedication to truth and the joy of its discovery, I have found KUOW and Public Broadcasting to be the resource most needed in our world.

I am writing out of concern that Cliff Mass will no longer be heard on KUOW. He is unquestionably the gold standard in his field. I was forwarded his blog posting by another contributor to KUOW who values his broadcasts. I accept that I do not know all the facts. However, I am deeply concerned that so excellent a voice has been silenced. I found his foray into math a snore. A balancing voice could have been found to extol the virtues of fuzzy math or what ever the issue was. Defending the University of Washington and its admission standards also seems like an issue unworthy of termination from a University of Washington broadcast. Even if he had been guilty of a long string of similar transgressions, we need institutions like KUOW to provide managers and producers able to use readily available editing and programming tools to balance these easily surmountable sins. How tough is it to hit delete and talk to Cliff? How difficult is it to find someone who thinks fuzzy math is actually warm and fuzzy?

I don’t care much about tomorrow’s weather. I care about intelligent voices who can describe its dynamics and critical future impact. I am offended by canceling that dialog. I am deeply concerned that the management of KUOW has been unable to manage this issue. I am most concerned about the choice prioritizing narrow compartmentalization of ideas; we have Fox for that. If there is no cause with actual substance, I will unfortunately remain offended and will support other Public Broadcasting venues. I hope that instead, he will be returned and that no more choices are made that value controlled McNuggets of wisdom over true brilliance, intellectual rigor and infectious enthusiasm. That choice insults your listeners and the most fundamental principals of the University upon which you are founded.

Sincerely,
Brian Sherlock

Cliff Mass might be a brilliant meteorologist and he may be right on the math education stuff, but the stridency of his advocacy of his position is off-putting and his readiness to demonize those who disagree with him comes across, to me, as childish. I don't care to hear or read much of it.

KUOW has a right and responsibility to control the content on the show. They want to have a regular weather segment. They don't want to have a regular math education rant segment. This isn't a surprise to anybody, including Dr. Mass.

I know a lot of people here don't like Steve Scher, and frankly, I don't see why. He's no Terry Gross but neither does he come across as a buffoon. I look forward every week to the segment with Vaughn Palmer. Most of the rest of the content- not so much. But that's the nature of the format, and as far as I can see Scher does a decent job with it.

There does seem to be some legitimate question as to why Steves is permitted to add advocacy to his travel content without getting a similar Dear John letter from KUOW. Maybe that's because he's invariably a delight to listen to, or maybe he is just skilled at skating near the thin ice. Or maybe his letter is in the mail.
61
The journalistic integrity comment has to do with KUOW bowing to the UW when they got pissed about Mass's truthful comments on the situation there. They didn't like the accurate criticism, squeezed KUOW's balls, and now Mass is gone right along with the journalistic integrity of KUOW who has shown it WILL capitulate and hide the truth if one of its masters growls.
62
Scher is clearly -such- hot shit that KUOW has no need to worry about getting enough money. That's great, I'm sure that there are Math Illiteracy charities that'll gladly take my pledge money.
63
The grammatical error(s) in Scher's letter remind me why I always hated him on-air. Proofread, people!
64
Steve Scher drives me cuckoo. So inattentive, unprepared, ham handed, out to lunch... etc etc. But I called Arvid and I told him all this, and we talked and then I realized he (also) was googling -or something - while we were talking, and I tried to finish up but he kept mindlessly asking me for further comments- I finally said, I HAVE TO GO!!!

Is the problem multi tasking? FOCUS MEN!! Or get out of the way and let someone else do a decent job.
65
Steve Scher is an embarrassment to Seattle Public Radio. I've been listening to public radio for twenty-five years, broadcast from stations in every city I've ever driven through or lived in, and he is by far the most ignorant, absent-minded clapping chimp that I can remember. The random pacing, the stumbling space cadet ramblings (is he reading and talking at the same time?), and the 11th grade reading level all form a show that comes across as just about as sophisticated as a Forest Gump quote. I think its clear that without the Vaughn Palmer, Rick Steeves and Cliff Mass segments, Weekday has basically no content. I pray for the day Steve Scher's Weekday show is cancelled and those precious hour can be reclaimed for use by shows that actually mean something.
66
He's got to better informed and prepared than Joni Balter. Throw her unctious prevaricatin' ass off the show instead.
67
Listen to the last 10 minutes of Steve Scher's 10 am "Weekday" show from Friday on kuow.org. One caller "snuck through" the highly reactionary talk show host's screening process... and Scher WENT POSTAL on him for even bringing the subject up.

This, apparently, is indicative of the "free flow of information and opinion" that KUOW / UofW Institution, Inc love to encourage.

The level of self-absorbed, self-congratulatory passive-agressive Seattle snobbery on display every Weekday morning from 9-11 am gets worse and worse every year. I would rather suffer through 45 minutes of annoying commercial fm advertisements (along with the non-fake humility of Dave Ross and Luke Burbank) than suffer through two hours of commercial-free Steve Scher.

The way Scher, his producer, and the stale bureaucracy they pimp for treated Cliff Mass is not uncommon. This one happened to make "the news" because Mass was so well known, respected and enjoyed by the broader community. If Mass was a super-decent guy with no name recognition, Scher and his 800 lb reactionary gorilla would have chewed him up and spit him out a long time ago.
69
My beef with Steve Scher is more his arrogance than his incompetence. His "Oh so casual" and "I'm bored with this interview" style drives me crazy. I simply cannot stand to listen to him unless the person he is interviewing is someone I ABSOLUTELY want to hear. No question that KUOW would be better off without Scher.
70
Best way to show displeasure - donate $0.02 to KUOW and in comments say "Fire Steve Scher, bring back Cliff Mass".
71
What about that Jeannie Yandel? Whose decision was it to hire her? Off topic, perhaps, but if we are considering incompetence here, let's open up the conversation. I want to lose my mind every time I hear her voice, her laugh, her "wow!" response to comments she clearly cannot comprehend. Seattle's KUOW is far below the other public radio programming in terms of excellent, compelling interviewers. After listening to the station for a decade, Steve, actually, is the only one with some competence -- though I agree with many re. some of his techniques. Ever hear him interviewing Garrison Keillor? Painful. Nearly as painful as listening to Jeannie Yandel.
72
It's a 5 min show, it has no time for point counterpoint and while Scheer's email was tacky, Mass made no effort to stay in the weather mode and wanted to voice his opinion without a counter viewpoint. Scheer had no choice and his colleagues would have lost respect for him, if by the final warning, he hadn't dropped Herr Mass. I feel Mass is a bully when he doesn't get his way and is showing so by his not dropping this issue over his 5 mins, once-a -week segment.

He wasn't fired, how can you fire a volunteer on public radio? I would of phoned Mass and said "you're done" after being warned several times. No email.
73
SScanning all this makes me wonder whether most commenters are talking about the same Steve Scher.

I would have kept Mass on the air -- no problem for me if he throws in political and social commentary along with his excellent and entertaining weather analysis. As a semi-regular listener, I actually don’t recall any such comments; it doesn’t seem they were a dominant feature. So from what I know, I disagree with Scher's decision. That said, I understand the reasoning -- and reading between the lines, I have to suspect that Mass (who I also have met and like) has a big and easily bruised ego, and that he likely has been something of a pain the ass about it all.

In any case, the ad hominem attacks on Scher are misplaced. Twice over the years I was interviewed by him on topics in my specialty (STD and HIV/AIDS). He asked intelligent and insightful questions and clearly had done his homework. He knew the topic well, including the essence of the new developments that led to the interviews. And as a frequent but not regular listener, I am impressed by his generally excellent questions and the evidence he researches the topic completely. It's hard for me to believe that any careful listener could call his questions softball or say with a straight face that he doesn't know the topics. And even for those who believe it, please can the personal vitriol. It doesn't get anyone anywhere and it looks bad for the person making the comment.

As for those who accuse the University of pressuring KUOW on political or social grounds -- get real! I've been on UW faculty for over 4 decades. This is philosophically unrealistic and would be patently against the University's interests. Just as the American Medical Association has no say in editorial policies of the Journal of the AMA (and burned their fingers when they tried to influence JAMA), meddling in their own media affiliate would backfire, and UW administration knows it. And the administration probably isn't capable of putting political pressure on KUOW anyway. UW is anything but a single minded monolith; if anyone tried, from the president on down, there would just as assertive support for the station from other, equally highly placed quarters of the administration, faculty, etc.

So the obvious solution, in the best spirit of public radio , is find some time to present the other side. I have been pretty dumbfounded that the problem of having to present the other side of CM's opining was seen as a problem rather than an opportunity. Is this the KUOW that I know and love and pledge toevery year for 17 years now? I love Steve Scher and bashing
of him is unnecessary, but perhaps he and Superintendent Enfield can do a show together on what it's like to make a rash personnel decision(I.e. Ingraham principal firing) and get creamed by the public for it, maybe throw in the other side of the math education issue in that show. And just maybe Steve will follow Dr Enfield's example and reverse the decis

He was brought on to do the Fucking Weather, hello? He can't turn it in to a salad bowl. Some of you sound like Ayn Rand disciples. Fucckiing move onnnnnnn. *****Cognitive Dissonance ALERT! *******It's their station, it's their station ********* Public radio does not give you a right to blather off topic. Go look at their station policies.

76
I support Steve Scher. Almost always the guests are great - Joni Balter excepted - and Steve asks thoughtful, interesting questions. I'm not sure where all this hate for Steve comes from - maybe from people who just turned the dial from "Morning Zoo"-like programs who yell and shriek and have a whole panel of buttons for 'comical' sound effects?

As far as the weatherman goes, despite all his other admirable qualities - and respect for Carl Sagan being one of them - on this show he was the weatherman. You think a tv news show would put up with a weatherman suddenly veering off course and initiating a diatribe about eugenics? "And here in the northwest we will have monsoons and . . . you know what really gets my goat? Eugenics! What the hell, people!? Stay outta my genes, MONSANTO!"
77
I think the best deal would be to give Cliff his own short segment akin to Keelers poetry segment in the afternoon. There is a lot of shady crap about his dismissal, and I doubt a smooth reconciliation can occur with Steve at this point. I understand some of the station issues but cliff Mass is obviously very well liked and could provide more to the station with his own short segment.
78
I think KUOW now blacklists the e-mail of anyone who sends a comment in support of Cliff Mass. I sent one (not super flamey) e-mail, got the stock e-mail from Jeff Hanson: "no one gets to talk about anything unless I say so, because that way it's 'fair and balanced'" e-mail, but when I tried to respond my e-mail had been blocked.

Censoring critics. Blocking e-mails....

H'mmm Did KUOW recently employ a new station manager who left Cairo in a hurry?
79
It is painful to listen to Sher TRY to interview. Go listen to his recent interview with Jodie Foster if you have any questions about this. I cringed everytime he opened his mouth. So did she.
I will not donate another dime-regular supporter here-until they undo this mess. Right or wrong on the decision, the hamhanded delivery is everything I abhor. If Steve supporters don't think this is a telling demonstration of this "thoughtful preparedness", I'm sorry for you.

80
Of course weathermen should be allowed to take a position on abortion ... after all, the more babies that are aborted, the fewer people will be around to listen to the weather forecast.

Seriously, there is much blathering on Weekday. The Friday panel show is nothing but pontification. Guests frequently go off topic, and sometimes end up discussing topics they really don't seem to know much about. What's the big deal? If we can survive an hour a week of gardening minutiae, and endless dead-horse pummeling around transportation issues, surely we can allow a practicing scientist to have his say about science education.
81
I agree...Steve Scher is one of the most....he is...no, wait. Let me put it this way if he was ...no, that's not really what I meant.....ha,ha,...let me get this to you right....Steve is...ahh....

Please wait...
