i know this is wrong to say, but sometimes the born & raised east coaster in me just needs to express itself... what a bunch of fucking pussies we are in seattle. it is as if we somehow need to 'prove' that every single restaurant & business isn't going to immediately go bankrupt and/or leave the city if we allow food trucks... so let's proceed cautiously. the restrictions & qualifications on food trucks are fucking ridiculous. and this after YEARS of debate. and we still don't know if it is going to pass. what the fuck are we afraid of? these are fucking food trucks you bunch of worthless fucking ninnies on the city council!! fucking food trucks!!

We mustn't allow these food trucks to interfere with the important nutritional needs of students currently being met by convenience stores. Kids will die if they don't get their Icees and Twizzlers and Chipotle Ranch Doritos.

FINALLY. The Seattle legislative process is glacial. In fact, I'm pretty sure one of the original proponents of this legislation was planning to set up a wooly mammoth burger stand.

They should be regulated for health codes, safety codes, traffic codes and not because they might financially impact a business in a storefront.

People eat at places because of good food, good service, sometimes economics, and sometimes atmosphere. If a brick and mortar restaurant can't survive a food truck on their block then they are doomed in the long run.

I'm glad they're getting to the climax, such a long buildup. Sure, I suppose it's good the council took the time they needed to make sure we'd get into it as smoothly as possible, but come on - thrust thrust sploosh already.

Dont be suprised if this causes local restarants to further lose money. Its not like you little rug rats are made of money and eat fast food 7 days a week. City might make more money collecting licenses, but overall, its going to hurt existing operations.
7
@6, and don't *you* be surprised if it doesn't have those negative effects. One reason the council took so long was to look at the history of problems arising like that in other cities that got into food carts. The goal is to minimize the harm to existing restaurants, while still letting us finally participate in this tremendous economic explosion that's so far happened almost everywhere but here.

" Setbacks from schools were also increased back to 1,000 feet (instead of the suggested 200 feet) after concerns raised from janitors, parents, and school officials."

This is really some bullshit. I would have loved it if I had good food across from my school, or during lunch, rather than the roach coaches that served frozen and stale grossness.

I can understand some of the concerns, but the City Council's going way far overboard with their restrictions.

@6: "Dont be suprised if this causes local restarants to further lose money. "

You are seriously the most annoying devils advocate on the Slog.

How is it that "liberal" Seattle is perhaps the most conservative large city in the Pacific Time zone? Portland has more than 600 food trucks. Has their restaurant economy collapsed? Has the city been sucked into a giant Apocalyptic chasm as a result? No, not even close.

Seattle, stop being a namby-pamby city already. Govern with courage. The current governance atmosphere around here is something I'd expect almost anywhere else but here.

Also, while 15 feet from any business, it's actually 50 feet from a restaurant.

@1: I know SRSLY WTF.

Imagine that shit in NYC or Philly?

Exactly.

Please wait...
