"When I was quite a young boy, I got to know what umbleness did, and I took to it. I ate umble pie with an appetite. I'm very umble to the present moment, but I've got a little power."
Pretty good platform. It's been proven time and time again that early childhood education both the most effective social program there is, as well as the most cost-effective. By any measurement - crime rates, unemployment, life expectancy, average salary.
Now if only I actually believed him, or thought that he had any other worthwhile ideas.
I almost feel bad for McKenna. He's an old fashioned Packwood Republican - limited government, spend smart money on effective social programs, clean as a whistle in terms of corruption. He could never get nominated by the nutjobs who call themselves Republicans now.
He SPOKE to brown people?!?!? Prepare a 10,000 gallon Tea Pot and BOIL HIM ALIVE!!!!
Hard to see how these glimmers of sanity are going to help him in the primary, unless he's got a whole pocket full of dog whistles to blow to convince the teahadists that he's kidding.
@6, I've never heard or read anything like that. Do you have any links to studies showing a clear causative relation between ECE and increased employment, decreased crime, and longer life spans?
Hell, ya. The Lord and Dick Parry both no that we needs more and more two-faced SOBs in leedership posishuns in our Merka ... beset as it is with heathan hoards and godles ... well, everyones!
@12- Planet Money had a couple things on it recently. In several longitudinal studies of poor children, a couple hours a day a couple days a week of preschool were strongly correlated with better incomes, less criminality, etc.
I've never heard the phrase "Packwood Republican" before, especially with the descriptor "clean as a whistle". I thought it was gonna be a joke about a republican getting caught fondling women, because, y'know, that's what Packwood got caught doing. *snicker*
but how will mr. mckenna PAY for this EXPANSION of BIG GOVERNMENT? clearly gov. gregoire's path of FISCAL AUSTERITY is more appropriate in these times.
This is one of the central misconceptions of Tea Partiers and Republicans regarding finance. The goal is not just to cut spending, but to make sure that what is spent is necessary and beneficial. Hence, even Obama made much of saying that he too would cut much spending, but "with a scalpel".
@ 18, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Food Stamps, and Unemployment are all beneficial, yet it's what the teabaggers want to cut the most; meanwhile, they don't have any limit in mind as to what the DOD budget should be.
The Washington State Democrats say it there: It comes out here.

It's sad that this is required.

"Beneficial," my ass.
It would be like electing David Bowie for Governor. He may have fell to Earth, but you wouldn't want him running the state's economy.
