Santorum vanquished Savage like bin Laden vanquished the SEALs that knocked down his door.
2
he didn't say HOW santorum vanquished you - just that he did. i imagine it must have been a frothy exchange.
3
A contest is born (thanks ddt58):

Complete this sentence: "Santorum vanquished Savage like ________________"

4
Does that guy even know what "vanquished" means?
5
@4 - "Vanquish" is another word for "cry", right?
6
You know what to do, Dan: Googlebomb "vanquished" to mean "felched."
8
Santorum just offered the most honest explanation that you're ever likely to hear for why Republicans are opposed to birth control, accurate sex education, HPV vaccines, and equal rights for women.
9
you could fit all Rick Santorum's sanctimonious statements inside a gnat's vagina, and still have room left over for his intellect.
10
@3:

...like Dewey vanquished Truman
...like Goliath vanquished David
...like Santorum vanquished Cain
11
Good God. You know, the people who are against abortion have some grounds if they honestly believe that an embryo is a human being equally deserving of protection, but the ones who are against contraception have NO EXCUSE. There's no pro-life here, just anti-woman, anti-freedom, anti-technology.
12
Since when did vanquished mean fantasies of hatefucking?
13
@3
...like Dole vanquished Clinton
14
Santorum really needs to be asked if he himself, in ANY sexual encounter, has ever been with a woman using some kind of contraceptive. Because if there are any gaps in his recollection on this front (and there are bound to be) it should be obvious to anyone that he is bullshitting. His private life can't be private when other people's intimate organs and health are on the line.
15
I'm sure if you entered the GOP presidential race you'd get more than 4%.
16
@14 - We need to know about the positions he uses with his wife, how often, etc. Nothing is off limits to meddling, apparently.
17
Santorum does vanquish sheets on a regular basis. White ones in particular.
18
Dan didn't even reference the best of the article. A money quote from Bill Maher...

"But I get it because we fought a culture war in the 60's and the Right lost," Maher says. "Rick Santorum is like that Japanese soldier on the island who doesn't know the war is over, so he's still fighting against birth control and butt sex. Plus, Republicans are now mostly a Southern party and if there's one thing Southerners don't do well its lose a war and get over it."
"But that war is indeed over. The ideals of a youth movement became assimilated into civil society. That's why we have gays in the military now and pre-natal yoga classes and tofurkey. And that's why Rick Santorum will never be president and a black guy who snorted cocaine is."
19
How would Rick Santorum enforce his sex dictates? Put cameras in everybodies bedrooms? Inspect vaginas? Throw people in jail for having banned sex? How about priests that fuck little kids, Rick? I think this man has mental problems. Serious, sex related, mental problems. There is something wrong with somebody who demands we all have his approved version of sex. What would you call that? Oh, yeah, the pope! You are not the fucking pope Rick!
20
Well, apparently from your link the Santorum campaign website is #1 on google now, not the spreading Santorum website. It looks like he did vanquish you in the most important field of battle: Google search results.
21
Rick Santorum is not going to be president. Rick Santorum will not even win the Republican nomination. However, he will continue to be pointed to and laughed at for years to come.
22
I love how one person's puritanical beliefs just HAVE to be followed by everyone else. But, you know, he "loves america." People like him always claim that, but if he really loved America, he would appreciate that it is what it is because people can believe whatver they fucking want. Do they forget that there are people who are not christian in this country? Just because they have to hide having fun, doesn't mean we do!! Jeez, why can't people enjoy life?
23
Say what you like about the man, I'm going to miss Rick Santorum when he's left the scene - and he's certainly about to - in three, two, one...
24
Did anyone else notice that Tim McNulty's piece appears to be part of a regular series entitled "Daily Santorum"?
25
@20 - The correct definition shows up at the top for me.
26
Hey, at least he practices what he preaches:
Santorum and his wife, Karen Garver Santorum, have seven children: Elizabeth Anne (born 1991); Richard John ("Johnny"), Jr. (born 1993); Daniel James (born 1995); Sarah Maria (born 1998); Peter Kenneth (born 1999); Patrick Francis (born 2001); and Isabella "Bella" Maria (born 2008). Bella was subsequently diagnosed with Trisomy 18, a serious genetic disorder which is fatal before birth in 90 per cent of cases.[12] In 1996, their son Gabriel Michael was born prematurely and lived for only two hours (a sonogram taken before Gabriel was born revealed that his posterior urethral valve was closed and that the prognosis for his survival was therefore poor). While pregnant, Karen Santorum developed a life-threatening intrauterine infection and a fever that reached nearly 105 degrees. She went into labor when she was 20 weeks pregnant and allowed doctors to give her Oxytocin to speed the birth.[13]

The risk of these sorts of aneuploidies go up dramatically with maternal age - but they had to keep procreating, to try for that eighth child, because without procreation their sexual union would be false and imperfect. Never mind the suffering child they needlessly brought into the world. They'd probably have to get divorced or annulled or something if they were to stop trying for their ninth or tenth kid - at least, get separate bedrooms.
27
Can we get some clarification on what all this vanquishing is about? Assuming it's about something?
28
This just in: Santorum vanquishes Dan Savage by renaming what "savage" means. "Savage" is now a verb which is the action of holding hands and heavy petting in order to save yourself for marriage. Oh burn! Haha take that gaylords!
29
@26, I wonder if these family tragedies played a role in the development of his faith.
30
I'm glad Santorum finally outed himself as anti-contraception. Most of these antichoice religionutbags are anti-contraception, not just anti-abortion, but most of them remember they're not supposed to say that except when they're meeting the other members of their particular asylum. The more these fascist cocksuckers out themselves, the less chance they ever have of holding office. Americans may be uneasy about abortion - no one LIKES the idea - but trying to outlaw the Pill is most definitely a losing issue.
31
Yeah, all jokes aside, I am genuinely curious what Santorum did that supposedly "vanquished" Dan.
32
I'm sure the Santorum washed right off after Dan was through with the vanquishing.
33
I was looking for the old spreading santorum page and found this instead... http://oursilverribbon.org/blog/?p=188 sorry if you've already seen it.
34
I don't think vanquished means what Santorum thinks it does.

By the way, Dan. I wound up explaining "santorum" to my mother last night. Thank you. o.O I may or may not recover from this. (She was simultaneously amused and appalled, not being a Santorum (or santorum!) fan either.)
35
McNulty is an idiot. His reporting is second-rate and his blog sucks.

The PG is a pretty liberal paper, and they need a token conservative reporter/blogger (McNulty) and a token conservative columnist (Ruth Ann Daily).

@24 - the PG has been following Santorum's campaign with that blog called "Daily Santorum." It cracked me up the first time I read it.

I assume the "vanquished" part refers to his sponsored link on Google that appears before "Spreading Santorum." I never click on sponsored links, of course, and I imagine most remotely tech-savvy people don't.

Of course, they aren't his target audience, either.
36
Wait. It's not your vagina. It's America's vagina.
37
@29: i wonder if these tragedies are a RESULT of his faith.
38
Remember, since google is increasingly personally tailored, it's entirely possible for everyone's "top results" to start to differ (which is why I find SEO to be pretty laughable these days, since Google actually works *against* it).
40
Maybe he meant that Savage vanquished some santorum.

Anyway, Santorum would no doubt outlaw anything but dead-fish missionary style. And you have to make an "I know this is awful but it's God's will" face. And it would be enforced. By penalty of stoning.

41
McNulty's article has garnered exactly one comment:

written by ironsausage, October 24, 2011
How exactly did Santorum "vanquish" Dan Savage? Last I heard, Frothy Rick declined a public debate with him. And why does anyone take a guy with a troglodyte mentality and a tiny fraction of the republican vote seriously, anyway? If it wasn't for people's amusement at Santorum's "Google problem," the public and the media would have forgotten him long ago.

Wait, was this from one of you guys?
42
Mitt Romney is also for banning contraception: he supports "Life begins at conception" laws, which would effectively ban all hormonal birth control.

And most American women use hormonal birth control.

So, after the Republicans get rid of abortion, and The Pill, they'll be coming (heh!) for the condoms and other barrier methods.
43
@30, @42 Like you, I'm glad they're expressing their anti-contraception viewpoints for the public to see. Most Americans like contraception but, unfortunately, do not believe that there are social conservatives that really want to take that away from them. But there are.
44
And, of course, every time an anti-contraceptive man forces his woman to spread her legs, he declares (in a voice that echoes creepily), "I. Have. The. Power." [From the cartoon character He-Man, for those of you who don't know him.]

If I may have a firebrand feminist moment, I so wish that every woman had THIS power: Just before intercourse, she stares a man in the eyes and vows, "You get me pregnant, I'm snapping my fingers and you'll be the one pregnant!" ::sighs:: Well, I can dream, can't I?
45
Vanquished? Goddamn all those righties need to stop watching fewer Lord of the Rings movies.
46
@20 Turn your "Safe Search" to "off" or "moderate"...
47
These crazies who support the so called "personhood" laws, protecting all conceptions as citizens need to understand that the end result might well be that every woman who suffers a miscarriage might be subjected to a murder trial. The sooner that FrothyMix & his ilk all assume room temperature, the better off the world will be.
48
Dan, I think the take-home lesson is that even the conservatives agree that you're important enough to have an impact on the election (or else why care about what you ask or don't ask Herman Cain to do?). Looks like you've become a player in the game. :-)
49
@20, I just googled "Santorum" and got the Spreading Santorum website as hit #1 (with the Santorum campaign website as #2). It seems you're wrong, though, I suppose, these things can change from day to day.

@8, that also occurred to me -- conservatives running for office are rarely as clear and honest as Santorum about that. Indeed, the reason why they want to control other people's sex life is that there is one way in which sex should be had -- and everything else is wrong, bad for you, bad for your soul, a spiritual health hazard as it were. If he believes in hell, of course he's morally bound to do whatever he can to prevent people from ending up there, right?

In fact, that's how it works in the extreme conservative/fundamentalist mind: all this sex that's being had, all those people (especially women) having orgasms, that feels to them like drug addiction to others. The fundies think these poor people are damaging themselves beyond repair by doing these things, and it would be nice to help by preventing them from doing this (just as they think they prevent drug damage by making drugs illegal).
50
Which is why, by the way, I don't think anti-contraception conservatives are "anti-woman" -- at least, they don't do what they do because they don't like women, but because they don't like people having sex in ways that they consider degrading and self-destructing to the soul. It so happens that women have to bear the worst consequences if there is no contraception, but I'm sure their philosophy wouldn't change if men got pregnant instead of women.

It's not about hating women for them, it's about hating sex that deviates from the accepted party line. Women are just an unavoidable but secondary target (they're standing in the way).
51
What are the criteria for getting into a real dictionary.

Surely enough people use small-s santorum in conversation and print for it to be considered a real, dictionary-worthy word.
52
@20: "Well, apparently from your link the Santorum campaign website is #1 on google now, not the spreading Santorum website. It looks like he did vanquish you in the most important field of battle: Google search results."

Nope! He's still the King, baby.
53
I loathe Santorum. Having said that, he is entitled to his asshole's opinion about contraception. In this country he can climb on a soapbox and scream it loudly. I hope he keeps doing just that.
54
@Doot, I think a number of actual uses of the word in contexts that are not 'loaded' (i.e., in which one is not trying to offend Mr Santorum, but simply express a problem), with attestations (preferably in print), over a period of several years, would be the necessary criteria. (Unfortunately, santorum has such a specific meaning, it's difficult to imagine it being frequently needed, in print or otherwise.)
55
Whenever I think of it, I google Santorum, click on the first result, go Back, click on the second result, and then move on to the rest of my life. Just keepin' the love alive!
56
Santorum (the man) demonstrates that American conservatives believe in Freedom, which they define as "You are free to make any decision of which I approve."
57
You have to be more submissive to enjoy a good vanquishing Dan. ;)
58
@46 - whew, that fixed it. Santorum's campaign only comes up first when safe search is enabled. I was worried for a second that Santorum's bitching actually worked on google.
59
Yes, when I want advice on "That's the perfect way that a sexual union should happen", Rick Perry is the first person I would think of turning to for advice. WTF!
60
Um,... who the fuck is Rick Santorum?
61
Go get Insanitorium and twist his nuts so that he can't procreate!
62
@50. I respectfully disagree. Of course they can't say it's about women, but at it's core the right wing obsession with sex is about maintaining patriarchy by controlling womens sexuality. And yeh gays threaten their view of what masculinity is, which is also key for the patriarchy.
63
@62 I agree. The thing is that they _blame_ women for leading men astray, so by effectively re-introducing "penalties" on women for having sex, e.g. you will get preganant and not be allowed to choose whether or not to have a termination, they set women up to police the right-wing idea of morality. Gays and trans people do, as you say, threaten their ideas of gender, so that fuels their hatred of us. It seems there are quite a few self-loathing right-wing fundies out there who repress their own orientation and gender issues, channeling that into anti-LGBT activities.
64
What, does he think the Clown-Car-Vagina woman has pushed out a large enough population now to improve his approval rating? 'Cause he's not going to sell "contraception is bad" to many other people.

Please wait...
