Honestly? I think it's stupid to try to block it. It gives him exactly what he needs right now - a reason to play martyr, which he's been lacking. (I know he's been playing it already, but it was without a reason.)

Just let his crappy bust go up, and then protest the hell out of it.

Here's the amazing thing.

In the 17th year of the Web Age, post the 1995 introduction of Netscape, we're arguing over a guy who -- broadcasts on radio!

Love me some Stacey Newman - long time Moxie Media client and fabulous feminist. If you like that quote, you'll love this even more...

"Mr Newman, do you know how much damage this bulldozer would sustain if I just let it roll over you? ", Mr Prosser

"How much?", Mr Newman

"None at all", Mr Prosser

I say let them build it, only to have it vandalized by everyone and their grandmother, to the point where it becomes too expensive to keep repairing it.
5
Say what you will about Limbaugh...he does know how to keep his name out in the mainstream media! Even The Stranger gives him internet time.
6
I'm caught up on the person who had to fashion his head. Someone had to touch him to make the mold or chisel him out of stone – however it was made - and that grosses me out. Installing the bust or not – meh, I don’t really care all that much. But touching that hateful slime? Ewww.
7
I'm not a big fan of the government honoring people who are still alive. Wait til he croaks, then do the bust. With any luck, the fat fuck won't last much longer.
8
I hope the sculptor carves a hole in the mouth so people can pop prescription pills in it, and Rush's bust has a recorded voice saying "Thank you! Can I have another?"
9
We can hate all we want, but shouldn't lose sight of the fact that Rush perfectly represents the large and powerful part of the American public who are hateful, narrow-minded, bigoted, uneducated, anti-science, anti-progress, racist, and misogynistic. Should it really surprise us that Missouri Republicans consider him a hero?
10
Well, why not? He's become synonymous with Cape Giraurd (howeve it's spelled), there's an actual official Limbaugh tour of his home town. He's remained supportive of Missouri. He's become a radio icon, a legendary figure of political culture. Look how worked up people get over him. He's essentially created political talk radio. He hasn't killed anybody. He hasn't tried to curb anybody's civil rights. He's a recovering drug addict - fine - and he's a staunch conservative (which I'm not), and a lot of people hate him, mostly because he's been a highly successful advocate of his philosophy. Admit it - if Rush Lumbaugh was a liberal, he'd our darling hero and we'd give him every pass in the book. If liking sex and taking drugs are so unforgiveably reprehensible, a lot of members of our liberal Pantheon have to be thrown out. And if being a consummate jerk is such a disqualifying offense (and he's not), I want Edwin Hubble's bust taken out to the back and smashed with a sledge hammer. We liberals can be as biased and judgmental as the conservatives.
11
@10 I agree with most of your points, but want to disagree on this: I don’t think it’s about liking sex and popping pills. Even while burning through marriages, he’s railed against people he believes to be promiscuous and yelled about and mocked cheaters on the left and has questioned our current president’s devotion to his own wife and children. Even while popping pills, he’s accused democratic politicians of being deplorable pill-poppers and derided Obama for his admission about past drug use and his smoking. Limbaugh is a hypocrite. A disgusting, self-congratulatory hypocrite.

Also, I doubt he’d be a hero on the left. People on the left [generally] don’t preach against someone’s behavior while doing those same actions themselves.
12
Oh, bullshit, Allyn. The left is just as phony and hypocritical as the right. If you really believe that, you need to take a wake-up pill.
13
who, then, 5280?
14
Try Bill Maher for starters.
15
@14: Indeed, Maher has leveled more misogynistic insults to women than Rush ever did. And I don't draw the distinction that celebrities or politicians are fair game (like Sarah Palin) but private citizens (like Sandra Fuke) are not.
16
He's a hero? Okay, sure. What does he preach against that he enjoys himself?
17
@ 14, Maher is a comedian, not a political commentator. But even ignoring that, I challenge you to cite one instance where he either a) said anything as bad a Limbaugh (and keep in mind that Limbaugh said it for hours on end, day after day after day), or b) condemned someone for something he himself does.
18
@17: Oh, and I don't draw the distinction between comedians and political commentators on this. Thank you for pointing that out.
Yes, there's a difference between Maher's barbs and Limbaugh's meltdown tirade last week. But it's more like drip-drip-drip vs. a water main break.
And no, I'm not going to search Maher clips to make my point, but you're welcome to do that yourself.
19
@18 Phoebe, I'm not talking about being rude or obnoxious, I'm talking about hypocrisy.
20
Wait, what? Phoebe can't back up something she said!? How incredibly odd, that.
21
@ 18, the distinctions (and the rules that apply) exists, whether you like it or not.

It matters that someone is a comedian on HBO, instead of a radio commentator with a show in every market on the public airwaves.

It matters if the commenter engages in ad hominems on citizens doing their duty (like testifying before Congress), whereas that comedian only targets politicians, who are not exempt from such attacks.

The examples are not comparable. (You're in luck - I happen to know what you have in mind. But it's still incumbent on you to provide proof, not on me to accept it. Keep that in mind in the future - if you allege something, back it up or GTFO.)

@ 14, can I take your silence as acceptance of my point?
22
@21: Well, my goodness. Although you say you know what I mean you say they're not comparable. That's your opinion.
You'll have to admit that this discussion is fought with subjective interpretations and citing references that does justice to the nuances involved would like be picking up Jello off the kitchen floor -- primarily because the subject at hand in "humor" and both Limbaugh and Maher share one thing: they are deliberately provocative.

As to your question to @14, wow! I would never presume that with anyone on Slog!
23
Shorter Phoebe: "I know you are, but what am I?"
24
@ 22, who is presuming anything? I asked a question.

And all opinions aren't equal. Informed ones are more valuable, and closer to the truth, than those that are misinformed. Stating that there's no difference between private citizens (who ARE private, even if they testify before Congress) and politicians is misinformed.
25
If you want an example of a phony hypocrite from the left, look no further than Bill Clinton.

In order to lead this country, one needs to have a little phonyness and hypocrisy. And one needs to be a good bullshitter and backstabber.
26
@24: I think your missing my point in that there is no difference in how rude/crass it is to level misogynistic insults on the air whether the targeted woman is a private person or a public figure.
27
Maher has leveled more misogynistic insults to women than Rush ever did.

False.

Maher has never compared the daughter of a president to a dog. He has never dismissed any woman who disagrees with him as a "feminazi". He has never claimed that only ugly women care about women's rights. He has never slandered private citizens for days on end for the high crime of those citizens' advocating for their own interests.

Keep making shit up, please. I love laughing at your stupid ass.

@12,

Please remind me why I'm not entitled to benefit from my own fucking health insurance. YOU are a woman hater, you fucking useless asshole.
28
@ 26, I get your point alright. It's just that it's incorrect.

There's a difference when the target is a public figure instead of a private one; and when one person says it for a paying, nighttime, adult audience JUST ONCE while another literally says it for DAYS ON END on his daytime, public airwave, in-every-radio-market show.

You're ignoring differences that matter, and you're asking the rest of us to do the same. I won't.
29
@28: Fine, that's your prerogative.

@27: There's a difference between calling an individual a cunt and slut, like Sarah Palin or Sandra Fluke, and making a parody of an organization - like calling NOW a group of feminazis. Both are misogynistic, but the former is crueler because an individual (or family) is targeted. Until recently, Rush's insults targeted only groups and stereotypes.
Maher has been especially cruel and vindictive to the Palins.
30
"Until recently, Rush's insults targeted only groups and stereotypes."

LOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL
31
@ 29, uh-uh. Maher called Palin a "twat," not a "cunt." And something that happened only once can not be characterized as "especially cruel or vindictive."

Words, Phoebe. They have meanings. You don't get to redefine them.
32
@31: You're right. Maher didn't use the c word against Palin, but against Hillary Clinton. It was the Hillary Clinton's cunt remark that caused HBO to fire Maher. What a horrible thing to say about the former first lady and then presidential candidate.

I disagree, it can take only once to be cruel and vindictive.
33
@ 32, maybe just cruel (vindictive indicates actions beyond a quick joke or two), but "especially so?"

Just so you know, I'm no fan of Maher. He's generally unfunny, and not just because he makes sexist cracks. But he's not the left-wing version of Rush Limbaugh, either. He's not any kind of hero to the left (unlike, say, Jon Stewart - who is another person who can't be reasonably compared to Limbaugh because of their different scopes and professed jobs). Righties are trying to make Maher just that, because it would give truth to their tired "The left does it too!" refrain, but it's simply not the case.

Please wait...
