It's so cute they're taking a page from the Ken Hutcherson publicity-grab playbook.
2
Well, anyone can make a petition: http://signon.org/sign/we-applaud-starbu…

Making people care, however, is a different animal entirely. A wise facebook buddy pointed out that the one thing NOM's target audience is more likely to cling to than their own stubborn belief in abiblical "traditional" marriage is their cup of Starbucks.
3
BAHAHAHAHA

IDIOTS!!!!
4
NOM is going to do this. NOM is going to do that. They keep pledging millions of dollars to do things they couldn't afford to do if they could even afford to do one of them. If I was Schultz, I wouldn't have given NOM any respect, "Security, remove the lunatics please. Can we get on with this now?"
5
Dammit, now I have to start spending money on Starbucks swill as a way of telling NOM to suck it.
6
NOM is for losers.
7
"This video is private"
8
This almost makes me want to buy something from Starbucks.
9
NOM should also boycott using their computers to launch this attack because all major tech companies support same-sex marriage including Apple, Google, and Microsoft.
10

Yesterday I bought some frozen fried chicken veggie patties at QFC to make my own Chic-Fil-A.
11
@7) Damn. Looks like they shut folks out--at least I got some of the transcript first. Let's hope somebody copied the whole video.
12
This is going to cost Starbucks literally DOZENS of dollars in lost business!

NOM is having a really bad day. They just suffered a huge defeat.

A few minutes ago the Hew Hampshire State House voted down a bill to repeal that state's marriage equality law. It was expected to be a close vote in the overwhelmingly Republican chamber. It was expected that the state's Democratic governor would have to veto it with the hope that the veto wouldn't be overturned.

Instead, the bill loss overwhelmingly, 202 - 133.

Guess I'm going to have to eat more Chonga bagels.
17
I'm not a big fan of the green monster, but I know where I'll be buying snacks the next time I'm trapped inside SeaTac waiting for a flight.
18
@5
RIGHT! Do I REALLY need to drink MORE coffee?!?

Go for it NOM. Just go for it.

I'll be forced to drink more Starbucks coffee non-ironically.
Hmmmm, I wonder if Starbucks can make a "gay" cup and charge a nickel more or whatever? All profits go to making fun of NOM or something.
19
think progress has some video posted in their article:

20
@18
Maybe Starbucks could do a special rainbow cup with all proceeds to go to specific LGBT organizations?
21
"purchasing a cup of Starbucks equals support for gay marriage."

Does this mean I can just hold up a SBX cup whenever one of those bright-eyed canvassers asks me if I support gay rights?
22
@18 "Hmmmm, I wonder if Starbucks can make a "gay" cup and charge a nickel more or whatever? All profits go to making fun of NOM or something."

I'd like that, but think I'd only participate if they had one of those funding goal "thermometers" in the shape of a middle finger.
23
@12:

Considering the typical anti-NOM backlash their announcements tend to generate, I'd be willing to be SBUX will actually make MORE money as a result of this "boycott". Hell, just the number of SLOGers who've pledge to increase their purchases in this comment thread should alone be sufficient to guarantee that.
24
Trying to figure out if this jibes with my boycott of Starbucks over that time they were playing BILLY FUCKING JOEL when I went in there wicked hungover.
25
"The NOM Blog says the group will "place ads throughout the United States, as well as in the Middle East and Southeast Asia."

Hmmm

How are they going to afford that and also pay for petitioners in WA and MD, for the referendum campaigns in WA and MD, the initiatives in MI and NC, the opposition campaign in ME and the defeat of pro marriage equality representatives in IA, NJ, NY and NH?

Not to mention that Prop 8 thingy winding it's way through the courts.
26
On my way to starbucks, now, along with more people than those who would boycott. See how that works, Maggie?
27
As if there's much overlap between the type of people who are bigots and the type of people who drink Starbucks.
28
I don't normally frequent Starbucks, but I'll go there tonight for some Chai tea.

29
Leaving work now and going to buy something at Starbucks. Screw you, NOM.
30
@15 The sudden applause is a nice burn.

@14 Wonderful news about the strong win for equality in NH!
33
Who the fuck pays these people to gay-bash all fucking day?

I can hardly even be paid to do meaningful labor. NOM does nearly nothing but gay-bash; their priorities have really nothing to do meaningfully with marriage. And even then, what's so great about being fucking married? I can't even count on my fingers and toes the number of people I know personally who wish they were never married.
34
Not to get all Dr. Oz-ey, but Starbucks is awesome if for no other reason than they have fresh, healthy vegetarian options in towns, malls and airports all over the world. Even their meaty stuff, not to mention espresso, is better than all the food in my family's hometown restaurants. If you travel a lot, this is important. And they are super nice to their employees, from what I hear/read. For this, and what howard Schultz said today, I have become a fan, after too many years of swearing I never would be.
35
NOM NOM NOM
36
Do it! Show us your true colors!

This is so going to backfire. It's not the same country it was twenty years ago.
37
OMG Frappucino's suck ass... but it was the most expensive thing I could find on the menu, so...

39
@37 Do they still sell plain drip coffee? Just buy two of those. Their profit margin on drip is probably at least as high as on the "syrupy bucket of snot," as I believe I once read their awful, weird drinks described.
40
Yes, NOM. Southeast Asia and the Middle East both eagerly await your promulgation even more than we do.
41

42
I'm going to go out and buy a Starbucks Gift Card for each of my relatives.

Normally, I don't, but ...
43
@37
Yeah, I'm with you.
See this? No, you can't see this because this is a text only post. But it's a stupid iced venti (venti isn't even a word) soy chai latte. I just went and got it so I could annoy the NOM people.

And the guy who served it may have been gay. I didn't ask. If he is I hope he spends the tip I left on something gay.

And tomorrow I'll go get some other kind of coffee beverage from them. Something that takes 10 minutes just to order. Filled with sugary syrups and toppings. Just so that I can annoy the NOM people some more.
44
Oh noes. Next thing you know, the Westboro Baptist Church and the Klan are going to boycott Starbucks, too! What will our beloved burnt-coffee dispensaries do without the ever-so-vital hate group market share?
45
@43, "venti" is "twenty" in Italian. And dear lord I would love it if you would go to Italy and order "venti latte". Will you get twenty ounces of milk, or twenty GLASSES of milk? Whatever, you'll have fun finding out.
46
Oh, Maggie.

The more you stomp your little feet and pout, the more the world sees you for what you are: a spoiled little child throwing tantrum after tantrum.

LOL @ balderdash "hate group market share"!
47
Yep, I'll be stopping by Sbux for my coffee tomorrow morning. I love all of these major companies doing the right thing and telling these assholes to suck it. I'm still not shopping at JC Penney though.
48
Here's a link to a replay of the Starbucks meeting webcast. The Q&A starts at 2:30:30.

'wake up maggie i think i got something to say to you'.
50
Are you reading this Starbucks? I will buy extra from you tomorrow. You're cool again.
51
Starbucks: Now with 100% less homophobic assholes!

That's an ad campaign I can support.
52
At 10PM Central Standard Time, there are less than 1,000 people signed up. Wow, guys. Kind of like that Million Mom thing that had like a couple hundred moms involved in it. Hopefully this is a sign that the number of bigoted assholes who can only care about abortion and teh gays is diminishing.

I'm going to Starbucks tomorrow, on my way to J.C. Penneys.
53
i'vbe been waiting for a good excuse to get me one of them strawberry frappachinoes ( or however they spell that shit) that my 13 year old neice let me taste after she made me get one for a treat.. because , really, anything other than coffee at them joints is strictly for the preteen set. so yeah.. tomorrow i get one. and i'm gonna make it as sibilant as hell, plunk down a $2 tip and in the words of my girl miss rupaul 'sashay...away'
54
Preach it!

Thanks waldhorn.
58
Ah yes, "hideously repellent bucket of candied snot" is the phrase I was groping for in my wine-sodden memories.

59
Schultz DID sell the Sonics out to OKC and therefore will forever burn in Seattle hell but this was indeed a strong response to idiocy.
60
News has reached southeast Asia,Im so buying coffee right now..
61
I like the "ads in the Middle East" part. They're basically using the American fear of Muslims or perhaps evoking the Muslim influx in Europe as a veiled threat.

Leave it to NOM to run to their fundamentalist allies in the Middle East when the going gets tough. Expect more Christianist-Islamist alliances in the future as these guys start losing big in the culture war.
62
@43 -- Venti is so a word. I pronounce it "large."
63
Yes their attempts to disrupt the business are laughable in the US, but when you take that message to a religion run area like the middle east and areas in Asia where they detest diversity, I would bet they'd at least have some success. I like the way Howard Schultz defended the companies decision. Well done.
64
@39 they get the highest profit margin over the drink that takes the shortest time to make, I think! everyone go order your drip coffees!!
65
With the recent failures of the anti gay folks, you'd think they'd get the message. Ellen is still the JC Penney spokes-lesbian. Toys я Us didn't pull the gay marriage edition of Archie Comics. Republicans were argued to keep marriage equal in New Hampshire. Gay people can still get married in that state.

You're only slowing us down, but you're losing your pointless war. Think of the good you could do if you used your money actually doing good in the world, feeding and housing and providing medical care the poor. Alas, trying, (and failing) to stop gay people from getting married is the most important thing in your sad little world.

Times they are a changing. Gay people aren't going anywhere, nor will we stop demanding our rights. Just like people accepted suffrage, integration, interracial marriage, etc, they are accepting gay people as fellow human beings, deserving of love, respect and equal rights.
66
Long time reader, first time poster because this totally tickles my funny bone. Next time we have a Chick Fil A picket, we can multi-task by getting our coffee at the Starbucks across the parking lot.
67
Wow, imagine how freaked out NOM is going to get when they find out that drinking Sbuks coffee is actually what CAUSES people to turn gay!! They're gonna have a heart attact when they discover that having more than three lattes in one week will make a woman propose to another woman too! Sound stupid?..... Well, if your organization is dumb enough to believe that spending money on ads in Saudi Arabia is going to stop me or anyone else from our morning choco-mocha frappiccino macchiato latte venti grande coffee-thingy.... Then you'll believe anything.
68
I went to grab a Clover at the Starbucks on California and Fauntleroy (across from Zeek's)on our way back from Lincoln Park this morning. Apparently, the NOM Robocalls that are promoting their boycott are telling people to call that particular Starbucks store. So as a result, the folks behind the counter at that particular store are getting these hateful calls. So if you live in West Seattle, consider making a stop there to support that particular store.

Please wait...
