We might mention in passing that prescription drug overuse is a huge part of the problem. Unfortunately, this brings up the issue of government regulation, which has been roundly demonized by the conservative media.

@1, I think that calling it "President Calderon's drug war" is misleading. Much of the funding for the drug war comes from the US through things such as the Merida Initiative. We're very complicit in this.
