BIRCH IS DEAD?!!?
2
R.I.P.
3
Whatever, just re-run his old columns in perpetuity, or have his no-talent kids write it.
4
Long live Birch.
5
Please god no!
6
Oh, you guys aren't really killing him off, are you?
7
Nooooo!!!!!

Steen was the perfect foil for the Stranger.

Steen will be greatly missed. *weep*
8
It was the big server blowup, wasn't it? Between that and the Pulitzer, his old ticker couldn't handle it.
9
I'm all a-twitter to know whose name will be anagrammed next!
10
Noooooooooo. R.I.P. ( and please return as a hologram next week)
11
Congratulations to A. Birch Steen originator Bradley Steinbacher on his new daughter!

12
rob!

Del S. Raines
13
Cmon, we all know Birch has 5 frozen human hearts ready for transplant wherever he goes. This is all a ruse, I suspect, to keep some ill gotten gains from the taxman. A visit from the elderly "Austrian" surgeon, a 220 volt electrical socket and an "adult novelty device" will shock that fucker right back to life.
14
YAY! fucker.
15
I hope the Stranger gives Chet, Wm.(TM) Steven Humphrey's nephew, a second chance after Humpy fired him all those years ago.

(Shit, I've been reading this paper for a longass time!)
16
If only his previous columns had received this many comments . . .
17
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
18
@15... or clark humphrey...yeah ..have clark do steen..
19
NO! NO! NO! NO!
20
"With all good things come all bad things." - something Birch probably thought about a lot
21
Dammit! No! I demand that cranky old fucker be reanimated.
22
@10: YES PLEASE A. Birch Steen hologram!!
23
Shocking, both his passing and his use of "Still and all".
24
@12, a more fitting honor than three bottles of Ballatore Gran Spumante, I suppose. The time nexus is interesting.
25
Aw, I always start my Wednesday with a cup of coffee and A Critical Overview of The Stranger.

Good luck!
26
A. Birch Steen for the win!
27
@22 for the Pulitzer Prize for Pugilism
28
Just keep that French intern away from Birch's old spot!
29
please dont take away birch :(
30
Good thing you don't have any Norwegian interns ...
31
if this is true... I'm going to miss that cranky bastard.
32
No! This was consistently the best column (along with occasional gem from Hulk). Win one damn Pulitzer and now The Stranger is too cool to make fun of itself (yes, that's a low blow and likely totally inaccurate).
33
As Mr. Steen's secretary, does this mean I'm out of a job? What about my memberships in the WAC, Harbor Club and Rainier Club? And my tab at Canlis and the Olympic?

Oh Birch. Why'd ya have to go? Couldn't God have taken me? After all, I've had nothing to live for since they closed I. Magin.
34
I still remember the time the Critical Overview was inadvertantly posted under the Wm. Steven Humphrey byline then quickly changed.....

By far my favorite part of the online experience, and obviously very difficult to write so well - consistently surprising language and drop-dead barbs. I might just have to look through the archives now and then for a Steen fix.
35
NO. Birch is the best part of the Stranger!
36
Steen retired? Oh, great. Now we'll have to wear black armbands on our cynicism and endure our festering contempt in solitude. I suppose that degenerate Savage is getting more column inches out of this, somehow, or maybe a few more "medical marijuana" dens will be able to buy overpriced ad space. Thanks a ton, Stranger staff, for snuffing our patron troll. It's all over - only a cataclysmic eruption of Mount Rainier can save The Stranger from mediocrity now.

(Srsly, it was most enjoyable. Bring him back soon.)
37
He will be missed by a great number of our readers and even some members of our staff.

But not, one imagines, by David Schmader. Steen's disdain for him and his work reportedly ran so deep that he arranged for their vacations to coincide, in order to avoid missing a single chance to excoriate him in print.
38
:(
39
With this news and Eli no doubt moving on there will be no reason to read Slog...
40
sucks
41
Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
42
First thing I read each week was A. Birch Steen.

Now I'll just skip to page 11 and ignore all the ads ...
43
I will miss this column! It's been the first thing I read in the Stranger for more years than I can remember.
44
I will miss him. RIP until he can come back, zombie-like.

Please wait...
