By and large, if you read between the lines, I'd say that about 85% of Super Heroes were pretty much gay.

Except Spiderman.

And everyone hated him.
2

Religious people are against homosexuality because homosexuals, on their own, cannot have children. More children strengthen the church through numbers. To wit: Catholics.
3
That was fun!

And the Million Moms now have my new email address and name: Not A Bigot, Notabigot@notabigot.com
4
One million nagging fascists.
5
I love the complaint that homosexuality is too complicated for children to understand.....like the Bible is so cut-and-dry.
6

Be wary.

Thanks "One Million Moms" for the opportunity to send my support on your behalf!

That form is a spambot waiting to happen. I think the site was built by a 14 year old. I'd bet 10:1 odds it takes comma separated emails, too. Anybody feelin' a cURL loop? :P

All I’ve ever read for comic books were the Garfield books when I was a kid, so I need you all to help me out here.

Don’t comic books deal with terrorism, death, murder, violence and theft?

“A comic book is the last place a parent would expect to be confronted with questions from their children on topics that are too complicated for them to understand.”

My kid’s reading a book about a slave girl right now. I find it a lot easier to explain to my seven-year-old how families come in all sorts of styles, than it is to explain slavery.
10
Paul, you're too optimistic in your headcount. The One Million Moms are a project of the AFA. That means there's really only three of them, they're all male, and they're at keyboards in the Marketing Department. But your letter's great.
11
Mortal women are no match for Superfag
12
Screw these God moms, the real issue here is that DC Comics are a bunch of chicken shits for "outing" a character no one outside of your local comic shop has ever heard of. They could have at least used one of the many Robins they have at their disposal.
13
Sometimes I wonder if organizations like One Million Moms are self-parody, or whether they really are that inept.
14
F. U. Wonmilyan-Maughms just sent a strongly worded email
15
I'm glad you did your duty, Paul, and told at least one other person about this important campaign today.
16
I just sent a letter too, but my friend made a good point. If Marvel or DC doesn't actually read ever single letter, they may count your positive letter in with the negative ones. It would suck if your positive letter ended up actually swaying DC or Marvel to do something in response (although I think they won't).
17
It looks like you can register a complaint about a particular program or commercial or issue. I'd recommend registering a complaint about their website: http://www.onemillionmoms.com/ComplaintF…

Meanwhile in the way back machine:

1979 - Northstar originally conceived of as a gay character and appears in his first comic. Marvel would only let his sexuality be hinted at until ... (No protest)

1992 - Northstar says "I am gay" (No protest)

2012 - Northstar marries. (The world is coming to an end! Oh my God, think of the children! What would Jesus say - other than love the least among us of course?!?)

You guys missed this boat 33 years ago.
19
bahahah that was fun
20
Ha! That was fun!
21
Yeah read that passage I'm not so sure it condemns homosexuality.
22
Thanks for the link Paul. I sent them a letter.

Dear comics writers.
I don't understand why some people have a problem with gays in the comics. You've been promoting hetero sex with those busty women in skin tight outfits for decades. I see no problem with finally having some gay characters. Keep up the good work guys.
23
I edited their form letter:
As a parent, I am extremely unconcerned that you would use a comic superhero character to help endorse same-sex marriage and mention the homosexual lifestyle. It is delightful that your company would participate in introducing different lifestyles to children when they are learning more and more about the world in which they live (even through the fantastically fictional world of a comic book).

Fortunately, children (and more commonly: adults) are now being exposed to same-sex marriage in your comic books and their daily lives. Gay adults may not need superheroes as role models, but gay children who happen to read your comic do. Your company is opening young minds by showing these characters in a positive light.

A comic book is one place to start a discussion with one’s children on topics that are complicated, but within their scope of understanding. It’s important to introduce issues of this nature early and often, which is extremely necessary in raising children with open and curious minds.

Please do the right thing and ignore the pleas of the One Millionish Moms to reverse your decision to have sexual orientation displayed to your readers.

My warmest regards,
24
Check back with me later, and I'm sure I'll have thought of a way to make a reference to "Rage" the gay superhero comic book character created for Queer As Folk.
25
Subject: Please ignore the Million Moms

"They are a handful of busybodies who probably don't let their poor kids read comic books anyway. And they are so stupid that they have provided me this platform with which to send you an email of my full and unequivocal support. They are no threat to you, your readership, or your bottom line. Carry on."
26
HEY!! One Millions Moms!!! Get me a cup of coffee sugar tits! And make it snappy!! Besides you're supposed to be in the kitchen anyway.
27
When I was a kid, I new these neighbor kids whose parents wouldn't let them watch The Dukes of Hazzard based on some bizarre concern over how they would drive their own cars one day. Sure, it's completely bizarre logic—life's full of that—but I can't help but wonder if there's something else that's really motivating them that they just didn't have the wherewithal to explain to their children. Was it Daisy? The Duke Boys' 501s? Or did they truly believe their little twins would be jumping the river at the county line in their LeBarons one day? (side note: another neighbor drove a General Lee replica, I do not know how this factored into all of this.)

Now, quoting Bible versus to condemn a fictional Canadian superhero with the power fly at light speed...that also likes guys? Um... sure. It's you're right to be as wack-a-doo as you'd like. But what lesson do you think you're really teaching your kids with this protest?

1) go to http://www.facebook.com/onemillionmoms

2) click on 'message' arrow, to the right of the 'like' button.

3) scroll down to 'report page'

4) click 'hate speech or violent attack'

5) chose 'targets based on gender or orientation'
29
You called it!
30
@28 Done! I sent the letter via their site too, but reporting them for hate speech was much more satisfying.
31
No business action at the level we're discussing takes place without a great deal of market research. Marvel and DC have determined a market exists for thier product, and they'll charge ahead to make the money they want. One millions moms will definitely be supporting Disney, regardless, to appease their fat little kids who want to see the next Nemo movie.
32
Developing story: looks like DC is blocking email from AFA servers. HAHAHAHA.

Unable to deliver message to the following recipients, due to being unable to connect successfully to the destination mail server.

DCComicsAdvertising@dccomics.com

I was able to successfully send the email when sending through my mail server just fine.
33
@16 I had a similar thought, not that I think they would change anything because of these e-mails. But we should find other ways to contact them and let them know our support/"subterfuge" of the OMM campaign.
34
@32 what are AFA servers?
35
@34 American Family Association, the hate umbrella org for One Million Moms.
36
I just spent five minutes posting comments on their FB page. Pointless, but fun.
37
Ah, I see...lolz indeed!
38
Surprisingly cathartic…

“Please ignore One Million Moms. They are idiots who would never buy a comic book in the first place.

Bring on the gay superheroes! It's about time that Green Lantern came out of the closet.”
39
And done!
40
@ 27, the parents there were most likely being up front and stating their honest concerns. Keep in mind that parents of that era had grown up without seeing movies or TV featuring lots of car chases, and parents tend to worry about how things they didn't grow up with affect kids these days. Also, there used to be a lot more concern that kids would go out and try to do any damned thing they saw on TV or in a comic book or movie. I think it was the same underlying fear that made some of these same parents commit their kids once they became rebellious teens.
41
@40 - Very good point.
42
@28 - That's awesome. Done.
43
@40 geez, apologist much?
44
No, just explaining. It's still an extreme case, but he's largely right. A lot of this sort of ongoing moral panic very quietly slipped under the surface when Bill Clinton became President (maybe due to the rise of new preoccupations for busybodies and new moral panics) and pretty much dropped out altogether after 9/11/2001.

One Million Moms Want Hulk to Put on Shirt and Take off Gay Purple Pants

As a parent and member of OneMillionMoms.com, I'm angry that you would use a children's superhero character to help endorse shirtless lifestyles and glorify the homosexual wearing of purple pants.

Unfortunately, children are now being exposed to bare-chested giant green rage monsters and the gay purple pants choice in your comic books. Gay adults do not need shirtless purple pants-wearing gym junkies as role models. Your company is damaging impressionable young minds by placing these gay Avengers on pedestals in a positive light. As a Christian, I know that purple pants are a sin. The Bible states this clearly in Romans 1:26-27.

A comic book is the last place a parent would expect to be confronted with fashion questions from their children on topics that are too complicated for them to understand. Issues of this nature are being introduced too early and too soon, which is extremely unnecessary.

Please do the right thing and reverse your decision to have purple pants displayed to young readers. My decision to support your company and parent company depends on it.

I look forward to hearing from you regarding my concern.

plenty of kids still read the big two, and Marvel, in particular has been leading everyone in the media in tackling the topics that advance liberty for all.

I don't read myself anymore, but I check out a synopsis of the big storylines now and again. sad that we have to rely on comic books to lead the way on issues as important as this one.
48
"It is disgusting that your company would participate in introducing sexual orientation to children when they are not equipped to understand what sexual preferences involve."

By that logic, we should remove children from households with married parents, lest they get the idea their parents are - surprise! - in a relationship and have a "sexual preference" for each other.
49
What's new about this??

Robin is CLEARLY gay.

Batman. Also gay, into twink....

Nothing is gayer than a pretty muscle-man in a body suit. Nothing. :-)
50
So you have to join OMM in order to send an email through their site. Doesn't that just give them another "mom" voice to point to? There's no obvious mechanism to 'unjoin'.

Please wait...
