That twat is still around?
2
Yup.
3
He's been a douchebag for two decades now. Drug Warrior, sex prude, safety nazi, scaremongerer.
4
Sex Prude? Is this the same Dr. Drew who did loveline? cause that guy was not a sex prude.
5
@4: he regularly told people on Loveline that anal sex leads directly and incontrovertibly to incontinence. He's always been a sex prude.
6
@5, he sure did. Trouble with blind spots is if you don't make an effort to get rid of them they move around and spread as you get older. Anal sex is bad, celebrity rehab TV is good, ex-lesbians are real...what a dumbshit he turned out to be.

poor Danny is so fucking jealous....

Not once (in this little clip, anyway) did he challenge the implicit assumption that there's something wrong with being gay. At least he mentioned that sexual orientation is not something that can be easily changed, and he had that caller warning about the trauma of ex-gay conversion programs. I've always kind of (kind of) liked Dr. Drew, even though he's such an attention-hog narcissist. He's a solid, engaging talk show host, though his advice shows have always relied a lot on the funny sidekick, which I didn't see here.

A few months ago I was sort of forced to listen to Dr. Drew's radio show (at the gym, it was playing over the radio and I didn't have headphones to drown it out with my own music). It was awful. He's a prude who brings on boorish anti-prudes (like dumbass has-been rock stars) as guests, which is I guess supposed to make the show "balanced" or something, but actually just compounds the misinformation and overall stupidity. Dr Drew is the Fox News of sex advice.
11
Maybe something was off during this interview, because here there's another interview where he says some pretty strong statements against "gay therapy"

Its worth watching to see another side. . .

SLOG isn't reporting that Crystal Harris has come back to Hugh Hefner:

also Drew is a much snappier dresser than Danny.....

I don't want to excuse Dr. Drew's douchebaggery in this particular instance, having this twat on his show is not cool. But, I'll tell you that as a gay teenager struggling to come to terms with my sexuality, Dr. Drew and Adam Carolla on Loveline helped me figure out that the fact that I like boys meant I was gay, and it did not mean that I needed to put a shogtun shell through my head. I've got to give him credit for that. Before Dan's "It Gets Better" project, before the widespread availability of sex-positive and queer supportive information on the internet, Drew was on the radio helping a lot of kids like me figure out that being gay wasn't the end of the world. I'll always be grateful to him for that.
15
@14: Yeah, I gotta agree with you somewhat...

I wasn't ready to come out back then, but the calls about being gay and the way he handled them shined a little light of hope under my closet door when I thought I had it sealed tight.
16
I need more explanation. DB because he let her on the show?
17
I ask because... aren't you having Brian whatisname over for dinner and taping it?
18
I didn't see this video clip as especially egregious. I saw the Christian ex-gay ministry person put on camera to squirm while the caller tore down her position. I didn't feel like the caller was rendered invisible. Getting up in arms about this is a little bit knee-jerk. It's just dumb daytime TV where issues are reduced to two sides and then two people are set up to tear into each other. Boring.
19
i feel so clueless right now O_O

dr drew has never come off as homophobic in any way, and he certainly doesnt appear to in this clip. can someone spell out exactly what he did wrong for me like i was a 3 year old?

It should go without saying that Dr Drew is a clueless douchebag everyday.
22
I understand that some people have some issues with Dr Drew, but as #14 said, the way that Loveline reached out acceptingly to gay teens and teens in general that were troubled, in difficult situations, or abused, was AMAZING, and I'm positive that show directly and indirectly saved lives. He may not be perfect, but casting Pinski as one of the bad guys is just silly.
23
Hate to break it to the Drew Defenders, but it's not 1995 anymore. He may have been helpful back then (though even then I thought he was a preachy judgmental dick), but standing up for him now is like wishing that Will & Grace were still on the air instead of Modern Family.
24
I think it's possible - even correct - to be in the middle on Drew. He's a mildly sex-negative, liberal-on-the slight-majority-of-issues "public health" figure. A lot of commenters here have touched on the fact that he's basically out-of-date, and I think that's about right. Not a bad guy, but he really could use a good sit-down with Dan or other genuinely progressive medical or advice professionals.
25
@17,18, 19: He had two experts on either side of the "debate" booked, and cancelled the other one at the last minute, offering her only a minute on the phone while the other one had a whole segment. When you choose only one guest, you are implicitly encouraging people to listen to their side.
26
Drew did as much back in the mid-90s to help gay kids as you have in this decade Dan. I often listen to old lovelines during boring work days (they are so interesting), and the number of gay kids who called in and were told not to be ashamed, not to believe the bullshit, and not to give up is high. All the gay kids listening in heard that advice too.

He is not sex-negative, he is just not a "have sex with everyone and everything you can" kind of figure. He simply believes that intimacy and responsibility is more important than physical pleasure, and believes people should consider all the aspects of sex, not just the pleasure. He tells many, many people to have more sex with their partners, to try to abide by their partner's needs whatever that may take. His advice is often not far from yours: communicate, empathize, be attentive.

And like #25 said, he has little to no control over what guests bet booked, or if the guests cancel. You have real enemies in this fight, don't go after anyone who annoys you in a particular day.
27
@19, He used to have a radio show about sex advice, regularly, his advice would be short sighted, somewhat flippant and highly conservative. I remember the show that everyone else is referencing, He straight up told a couple to not have anal sex, his reasoning was health. It isn't unhealthy, it was more taboo.

Like a doctor that wont give a girl a morning after pill because he feels she deserves this as a punishment. Most Stranger readers are familiar with the non-a-doctor sex advice that comes from Mr. Savage. His advice is always metered, compassionate and steeped in reality.

And he might not be homophobic, but when I listened to his show, ANYTIME a caller said they were gay, he IMMEDIATELY wanted to know how they were sexually abused. When they said they weren't, he wouldn't believe them.
28
I find it interesting that the ex-lesbian "Janet" was wearing a pink blouse with a black sweater over it. All that was showing of the pink blouse was an inverted pink triangle in the front.
29
I have no bone in this debate but I'd love to know if he ever volunteered that pregnancy "leads directly and incontrovertibly to incontinence" - since it really does - and then proceed to advise his audience against pregnancies.

If he didn't, his anti-anal bias and sex-prudery are proven.
30
Whether homophobic, sex-negative or not that doesn't change the fact that he is a charlatan and a shit-merchant.
31
I've heard that people believe Dr. Drew is "anti anal sex" because he recommended to one couple that they refrain. I listened nightly to Loveline. Dr. Drew said this to a young, teenage girl whose BF was pressuring her into it. Drew said if you don't want to, your body is going to resist it, and the likelihood for tearing or damage is going to increase., i.e. health issues. Only perform sexual acts you are comfortable with and don't date a douchebag who pressures you and won't listen. Dan, you say the same thing.
I also know from listening to Dr. Drew via the Adam Corolla Show, that the format of a morning show or a super edited MTVor VHI or whatever show does not allow you the time or space to do the job you'd like to. Even on Loveline, how in depth can you get in a 2minute phone call? Remember also, that Drew's audience is very different from yours, Dan. I think you should get a little more info on him, not just clips from a podcast or tv show.
And @23, Modern Family is a great show, very well written. But take a look: there are 3 families, with kids, all with single parent earners. NO working women. How modern/realistic is that?
