"Absolutely fucking tone deaf" is my vote. I saw a few of these guys heading up the hill after the parade. Everyone they walked past was doing double-takes. I remember asking Mrs. Hernandez, "do you think they even realize what they're doing and how it's perceived?"
2
The Dothraki, at least on the show, aren't even black.
3
Stupid and not nearly as creative as Roger singing in blackface on Mad Men.
4
Was it Darrel Hammond that played Jesse Jackson in those old SNL skits? Because I see a real difference between that blackface and say, Al Jolson's blackface.

Jolson's blackface grossly exaggerated racial features (the big red lips), and the percieved "step'n fetchit" mentality which is clearly racist, but is that really in the same category as what was done on SNL, where it was just an actor with darkened skin acting normally, in order to better play a character of a different race?

Seems to me there is more to blackface then just the simple fact of dyed skin. I dunno...just seems to be on a whole different level. Is it always racist by nature, or does the performance actually matter?
5
I've watched Game of Thrones, and the Dothraki are all played by brown-skinned actors. Therefore, this is absolutely blackface, and these people are idiots for not recognizing that. Why is it okay to be racist if you're ignorant of being racist? Being oblivious is somehow an excuse, and I'm not sure why.
6
I'm more offended at how poorly they represented the Dothraki
8
I would be interested in hearing from them. In Game of Thrones, the Dothraki are a patriachal warrior society. women have no rights and are fought over by the men as stallions fight over mares. A culture based on violence and theft is hardly something you'd associate with the Solstice Day Parade.
7
Nope nope nope. That is nasty. The HBO's version of the Dothraki were memorably led by Jason Momoa. Like him, they were immaculately worked out and waxed, coiffed, eyelinered and brow-shaped.
9
Idiots.

As a GoT fan, this is nowhere even close to what the Dothraki look like/act like. I bet they just liked how "ethnic" it sounded.
10
There's pretty much no excusing blackface unless you're dutch, and even then it's dodgy.
11
They're just embracing their true nature. Which is privileged white people drifting along in a river of cluelessness and incuriousity. It's much more fun to pretend to be made-up people in teen pulp fiction than to learn about actual people in the real world. Someday, some -- not many -- of these people will find themselves in some setting other than the perpetual frat-and-sorority land that makes up large stretches of this country, and they will be very surprised.
12
I was pretty shocked when I saw these dopes. I didn't get the Game of Thrones reference and thought "blackface" immediately.
We were sitting toward the end of the parade, and where most floats got a little whoop of delight from the crowd, the blond haired, black skinned "tribe" got stony silence. They were all huddled together, not making eye contact with the crowd.

13
Your technical nerd minute:

These are Dothraki slaves.
Dothraki grow their hair long, unless defeated in battle and always ride horses unless they are enslaved.

An interesting costume choice.
14
so did the performance end with them pouring molten gold on some blonde haired dude? because otherwise, yes, I vote racist...in an innocuous, naive, nerds-don't-have-social-skills kind of way. and yes @5, there is a difference between that and glaring, malicious, annonymous-Slog-commenter racism... or you know, violent, hate crime racism.
15
Slutwalks blog links to a flikr account with more pix. The guys have frat haircuts and are wearing Calvin Klein underwear. Hardly hippie attributes.
http://slutwalkseattle.com/
16
Game of Thrones is sexist, not so sure about racist.
17
In case you need another Solstice Parade pic to cleanse your mind, might I suggest this Gladiator with a Spear.

I mean, GOOD LORD.
18
If they are Dothraki why are they not fighting or fucking?
19
They were obviously Nordic warriors ... If they dressed in Blue paint or Red Paint you wouldn't have noticed, but this kind of thing was common Amongst Celts and Nords
20
Those aren't hippies.
21
@19 No... no it wasn't. I can't talk for the celts but "Nords" although a very very broad term, never used much of a collective painting thing.
And since they themselves claim to be Dathraki who (as so many have pointed out) arent black this is just plain wierd.
Since blackface exists in the US as a symbol for racism (not just an inherent racist ideal) its wierd these kids didn't pick it up.

Also they would make excellent Drow though... Slap a pair of silvery swords on one of them and white wig and it would be not so very racist and so very much more awesome.
22
Nothing screams racism to me than a bunch of hand-wringing, afraid-for-the-children, suburban liberals shaking in their boots in anticipation for when they can righteously & indignantly scream RACISM! I'VE FOUND RACISM HERE!!!

Hey, there were some people dressed as baboons in the parade as well. I'm sure that's racist as well, right? Because, you know, some people at some time compared African-Americans to monkeys, and baboons are monkeys, so there ya go. Oh, I also saw some people dancing as well. They're obviously racists, because dancing was one of the stereotypes attributed to African-Americans, so all dancers are racists who should feel shame.

One last thing, take your "you just don't get it" attitude & shove it. I know about the use of blackface in American history. That doesn't mean that anytime anyone puts paint on their skin that happens to be a darker shade than the one they walk around in is at all equivalent. The sick thing is that there is real, actual, honest-to-god racism going on in America today, and it's shit like this that allows the bigots to hide easier. Because normal Americans tend to roll their eyes at purity trolling like this, and so become all that more jaded when the accusations are real.
23

24
whoops. sorry about the double post.

I had some trouble w/ the scissors.
25
In the parade procession, these kids were directly in front of a float consisting of the sun and surrounding planets. I just assumed the kids with black paint were part of that group and were supposed to represent outer space.

Perhaps this is why no on booed them.

They weren't carrying spears but one of them did have a plastic sword.
26
"I guess I don't want to be alone in my outrage."

THIS.

this is why so many people think that most liberals are overly sensitive busybodies who want to actively censor other ways of thinking and speaking. why would you need to say that in an email?
27
ooooh also @Fnarf your just jealous because no one wants to cosplay ANY of the characters from a Tale of Two Cities.
(I learned everything I needed to know from AD&D and Star Trek. Can't handle the real world but give me an underground booby trapped tunnel system or some green dude with 8 arms who wants to make out and I know what to do)
28
@11 I hope you shook your fist mightily at them when they marched across your lawn.

Not that I disagree one bit.
29
@19, hark, Will brings us news of Celts and Nords!

These people have the excuse of being young and naive, Will. What's yours? "Nords", really? Are you in the Aryan Brotherhood now, Will?
30
@26 We can't all be conservatives- known primarily for their inclusiveness and aversion to censorship.
31
Blackface, racist, fucking stupid.

@22: "Nothing screams racism to me than a bunch of hand-wringing, afraid-for-the-children, suburban liberals shaking in their boots in anticipation for when they can righteously & indignantly scream RACISM! I'VE FOUND RACISM HERE!!!"

Nobody's screaming. It's just tone-deaf and retarded, as is your FREAKED OUT response imagining someone FREAKING OUT. You're the shrill one in this thread, nobodaddy.
32
ooga booga boogity booogity ooga asswipe srodface lickydodoo oooga boogity.
33
@30

if that's what you took away from what I said then seriously fuck off.
34
Fake tans would have covered being Dothraki. Or just dress up in the costumes? This is just... Crazy/stupid. There are people in the books with very dark skin, but they aren't Dothraki.

@Fnaf, I wish most teenagers had the reding comprehension and patience to read those books. If those were our societie's pulp there would be no Twilight.
35
Newsflash: People celebrating solstice on the wrong day are ignorant.

Sometimes I walk past a cult temple on my way to work. Say what you will about Satanists, but at least they know on what day to celebrate the solstice.
36
If they were supposed to be Dothraki they should've been a deep bronze (more like a bad spray tan) AND ON HORSEBACK! In the book only the lowest Dothraki walk. Even silly broomstick horses would have helped it make more sense. Since it is clear they based the clothing part on what they saw on HBO, I'm baffled by the completely different color.
37
Oh, this wasn't a group of people out of an iPod ad? Because that woulda been more accurate.

Dothraki are more closely modeled on Mongols or Native Americans, so the blackface doesn't make an ounce of sense if that's what they were going for.
38
I actually ran into these kids after the parade, asked them what their costumes were, and they said they were Dothrakis. I started laughing and said that they're basically in blackface, to which they got a little pissy as I think they had probably been getting comments like this all day. My impression was that, yes, they're just stupid and didn't think it through.
40
Fnarf, you should at least be happy to finally see black people in Fremont that haven't been adopted from Haiti.
41
@37, you know, there are such things as REAL Mongols, and REAL Native Americans -- lots of different kinds of them, even.

If these people want to learn something about actual people, why not dip into a book like "Maya Roads: One Woman's Journey Among The People of the Rainforest", or any of a thousand others like it, rather than dressing up out of some cod-mythological fantasy dross? The people of the world are not here for your amusement.
42
""The Dothraki can be interpreted a few different ways, but are described in the book as having copper skin and almond-shaped eyes. They are described by the language creators as “a cross between the Mongols and some of the Native American tribes.”"

I like how these fratboys just wanted an excuse to parade around in blackface without actually reading the books.
43
Are these the mysterious black people Will in Seattle claims he sees living in Fremont? At least fnarf isn't so delusional to claim any black people live in his 'hood up the hill on Phinney Ridge.
44
Game of Thrones is overrated.
45
@41: "If these people want to learn something about actual people"

They don't even want to learn anything about fictional people.
46
Do any black people even go to this stupid lefty parade? Do any blck people even read Slog who aren't queer? If a tree falls in the forest and no one sees it, did it fall?
47
aboriginalface, if anything
48
What made it worse for me was that they were the perfect blonde, blue eyed representations of Hitler's German race.
49
Way to go guys! They managed to offend people AND get the costume wrong! IF they want to be Dothraki, they are swarthy and not black and they don't wear green, and biggest of all, where are the horses?
50
Over 64% of you are responding that these people should have realized that painting themselves up with shoe polish and wearing loincloths and beating drums and dancing around going oogidyboogidy "might be misconstrued" as racist. Great, super.

"Silly hippies, your jungle boogie dance float will be viewed (incorrectly!) as being racist."
51
@46 yeah ! only black people who go to 'stupid lefty parades' should be miffed.. ummm i mean only straight black people who don't read slog should be miffed . everybody else stfu !
yeah... yeah...
52
"The people of the world are not here for your amusement."

Damn straight. They are here for the amusement of travel writers like Mary Jo McConahay. Hands off.
53
I would have booed them.
54
Seriously, "hippies"? WTF, Brendan?

These douches ain't hippies.
55
If they really wanted to dress like Dothraki, the ladies would have their tits out.
56
What a waste of energy. While you morons obsess over the political correctness of a certain inconsequential behavior, reactionary conservatism is playing squatter in your vagina!

Get a fucking hint!
57
For those of you who have anonymous comments turned off, 38 is worth reading.
58
@56: Get fucked. It's possible to be politically active AND care when people behave in a racist manner in public.
59

God, you people are so PC.

Let it go. It's just your ego.
60
And oh yeah - from this photo at least, they don't look like they're in blackface, they look like chimney sweeps who left their brooms at home and decided to use their bodies instead.
61
@60: "And oh yeah - from this photo at least, they don't look like they're in blackface, they look like chimney sweeps who left their brooms at home and decided to use their bodies instead."

That's exactly what blackface is? It's not about looking brown.

@59: Racism isn't all burning crosses in public, you know. There's racism, there's ignorance, and this case was a good deal of both.
62
how do none of you dumb fucks see the aboriginal thing?

63
@52, oh, is the book bad? I haven't read it; I just added it to my list recently because I'm interested in the Maya. Got a better one? Modern-day Maya, not pre-Columbian stuff; I'm all set there. I could just as easily have mentioned something about remote Indian tribes in the Amazon or Colombia, which these nimrods actually look a bit like.

My point stands; even "travel writers" are interested in the world, and sometimes write perceptively about it. Fantasy writers, even "good" ones, do not. And these kids probably aren't even reading "Game of Thrones" at all; they're watching it on TV. I hear there's a lot of hot sex in it.
64
@62: Uh, was there a "spearchucker" versus "plantation slave" difference in blackface worthy of distinguishing them? Because neither history nor practicality sees a fucking difference.
65
Their paint was flaking so much by the time they reached us on 34th that it looked more cheap + salt and peppery than blackface. It never once occurred to me that the paint job resembled blackface.
66
Yeah, WTF. Obviously racist. How nonsensical it is that they're supposed to be Dothraki only makes it worse. Racism under the flimsy guise of a fantasy reference. Racist racist racist.
67
Would anyone care to explain what about this is racist? Like, specifically, what statement is being made here that is obviously racist? I don't see it.
68
@67: Simple. They are engaging in the othering of a (fictional) ethnic group by adopting visual cues from a real-world ethnic group. The diversity in skin tone and cultural identity are lost upon them.
"Dothraki's have tan skin? Well, black's close enough!"
Do you see what's problematic with this kind of thinking?
69
Definitely seemed like frat boys and their women to me, and they were met with silence where I was on the parade too. The Fremont Parade is great because they pretty much let everyone do their thing, but there's a downside to that.

@67- They were doing some random "tribal" dancing while painted black. It's hard to know what the fuck they were getting at. I'm not inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt, it seems to be they feel black people dance around to drums and don't do anything else.
70
"They are engaging in the othering of a (fictional) ethnic group "

So like 80% of the fucking parade then.

Look out, here come the white race police screaming waaaaycism every 30 seconds.
71
Btw, has the fictional ethnic group filed a complaint with the city's racial justice po'lice for being "othered"?
72
Is this where I come to call other people racists? Oh. Yes. I see that it is.

Phew. Good. I've been feeling down lately and being a sanctimonious twat is just what the doctor ordered.

RACISTS!!!

Yeah! That hit the spot.
73
@72 as a member of a fictional ethnic group, I find your casual rejections of my people's fictional suffering truly offensive. Your white privilege is clearly on parade here, you need to attend a workshop and learn how to deal with the oppression of fictional ethnic groups.
74
@70, you completely missed the point. Read beyond that snippet and maybe you'll see what I was getting at.

As for the white race police, I fully encourage them to come join the ranks of this "waaaaaycism"-screaming latina

75
Oooo, identity politics thread.

As a Scandinavian American can I be offended every time I see a black girl in a straight blonde weave?
76
I don't give a shit what they were supposed to look like. Putting on body paint is fun and artsy, and nothing should be off limits. Especially something so from the source of this "outrage". I mean seriously, there is a difference between blackface and PUTTING ON BLACK BODY PAINT
77
This photo is awful-----in person they were beautiful. Enough said.
78
@68

didn't read your post before my first one so,

its called doing a shitty job at making a fucking costume. I suck at a lot of things, still do them, and don't get called racist for almost any of them. Its amazing how that works. Guess I'm just lucky I never tried to perform for you
79
Breaking news: white dudes don't understand what all the fuss is about.
80
"how do none of you dumb fucks see the aboriginal thing?

Abos? Are u fucking kidding mate, they look nothing like abos, or racists dressing as abos.
81
"how do none of you dumb fucks see the aboriginal thing?

Abos? Are u fucking kidding mate, they look nothing like abos, or racists dressing as abos.
82
Oh we know what the fuss is about: naive, sheltered, white kids hyperventilating over race. Always good for a laugh.
83
not hippies. not Dothraki. not racist. there. done.
84
They were directly behind the group I was in, and yeah, it was a little awkward when they wanted to pound on one of our drums and dance around a bit before the parade started. They did not, as far as I could tell, pretend to be anything other than white people who had painted their bodies black.
85
This article is timely especially in response to Same Old Nobody's comment.
As a repatriated Pennsylvanian who lived in Seattle for 7 years I live around, work with and hear racist attitudes frequently.
Their act is noting compared to the real life racism that is alive and thriving in the United States. This is what you all should be outraged about - A bunch of drunk high school kids who killed a Mexican immigrant and the town cops who covered it up and then have the nerve to appeal their hate crime convictions. I am glad this judge upheld their sentences.

I'm glad that you think that racism is okay in public because there's violence also occurring. Congratulations for suggesting that we let these idiots get away with their fratboy-at-burning-man stunts because there are murders going on. It's possible to care about all of them at once! Crazy, I know.
87
@41: *facepalm* Yeah, now that you mention it, there is at least a tribe or two of Native Americans that covered themselves in black like that, isn't there? I was too busy rushing to the defense of my favorite books to really think that through.

Will In Seattle *does* exist for our amusement, though. I'm pretty convinced of that.
88
how about focusing on real or more serious racism?

we have millions in poverty largely people of color or disproportionately so.

we have plurality black DC residents suffering de jure race discrimination; you all in Seattle get to vote for patty murray and she makes laws for DC residents like it's a colony. I don't see you all in an uproar about the fact you wield colonial power of the black people of dc (and other residents, who as you know don't have equal voting rights with residents of "states".)

Then there's a few million Puerto Ricans, also largely people of color, they don't have real voting rights and don't vote for congress (a voting rep) or the president.

then we got our DoJ saying cops here assault citizens, we got michigan repubicans muggingt their state constitution every day, we got the montana repu blican party showing an "obama outhouse" with bullet holes on it and a sign, "for a good time call michelle." All this kind of stuff is racist, and serious, and focusing on this kind of ultra pc crap is just fucking stupid when there's so much real racism at large in the world.

the zulu club in new orleans does a mardi gras parade. they have "mardi gras indians" who aren't indians. people who dress up and dance around may or may not have some kind of racial ....thing...going on. on the scales of what's important, it's minute compared to the fact there's like FIVE MILLION people of color in lands we rule over without rights to vote.
89

The women were *quite* hot. That distracted me from anything beyond that.
90
What a bunch of homos.
91
While local concerns are legitimate, this is trivial. Find some real problems. No shortage.
92
polls of this sort (similar to electoral politics) are limiting. these people are fools, also the premise of gang of thrones (from what little i just researched online - haven't seen/read got, and won't) is racist. not in a burn-a-cross sort of racism, but in the savage-people-of-"copper skin" sort of racist. also, they are hippies in the solstice parade. fuck them.
93
These guys are my friends and were just getting into the spirit of the parade like everybody else that was painted up. Just because a white person wears black paint/make up, doesn't make them racist or suggest negative intent. Get a life or at least find something legit to bitch about.
94
People actually care?
95
@93- Your friends are tone-deaf. Seriously, even if you have an intention that's completely not racist, you should try not to look racist.

For example, I have a friend who was going to embroider some six pointed golden stars on the sleeves of her jacket. But she didn't, because even though she wasn't trying to evoke memories of the Holocaust, she realized it would. So she did something else.

This is the kind of decision reasonable people make all the time.
96
@93

"Get a life"

Argument won, everybody go home.
97
I voted for the 'they're fools' one but I'd like to throw out that Dothraki are really quite racist against the Lhazareen, whom they casually derogate as Lamb Folk.

http://awoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/Lha…
98
@93: "Just because a white person wears black paint/make up, doesn't make them racist or suggest negative intent"

Yes, it does, you're all incredibly fucking dumb.
99
Microagressions such as these aren't part of "real" racism? News to me.
100
so, apparently it's okay if white liberals in seattle decry the racism as in "others will be offended by it so reasonable people don't do it" of these marchers, yet it's perfectly okay to all the white liberals in seattle that they elect patty murray to make laws for puerto ricans in puerto rico, and puerto ricans get no votes in making the laws governing puerto ricans in puerto rico, in a form of modern day colonialism, second class citizenship, by law.

hey it's only like five million people of color without voting rights. no biggie. but folks marching with black paint? OHMYGOD.
101
Heh, I enjoy how being a "sheltered white" kid has been used to put down both sides of the argument.

Stupid sheltered white kid thinks its totally ok to cover themselves in black body paint
Stupid sheltered white kid getting all roiled up about a cause that isn't theirs to take on

Guess there's no winning for us stupid white kids.

Please wait...
