I am an Episcopalian, and fiercely proud that we stand at the forefront of showing Christ's love for ALL mankind.

I hope you're right that we're part of an unstoppable tide. Sometimes it feels like the Mars Hill pod people are taking over.
2
I'm with Big Sven, although from the ELCA side of the aisle. The tide is turning, though here in South Louisiana, it is turning veeeeerrrrry slowly.
3
Thank God for the Episcopal church.
4
sven you fat bastard- where the fuck have you been hiding?
5
blowing with every social fad is why these flighty flaky sects are shrinking into irrelevance.
6
And this is why we're winning.
7
Reform and Conservative Jews are for marriage equality also.

No point in dividing it into religions. It's the fundamentalist religionists who are still practicing bigots.

those aren't really religions, you know....

"Opposing gay marriage isn't a religious position anymore..."

right.

dom.

you precious clueless little shitwad......

how many people belong to religions and denominations that condemn homosexuality?

and how many to sects that have embraced it?

declaring victory a little early, aren't we?

Didn't the Anglicans do this a while ago? It's cool and all, but it doesn't mean that opposing gay unions, or anything else gay, isn't a religious position.

There are many sects of Christianity, each with a separate doctrine. I'm glad that some of them are enlightened enough to move their religious philosophies forward, but for those who are not, it is their God given (and legally protected) right to hate gays as long as doing so doesn't cause those gay people direct harm.

I don't hate gays, but I also don't hate people who hate gays. It sucks, but the haters still outnumber the non-haters.

The best you can do, in my estimation, is lovingly make fun of them. It worked in Freemont with the Nazis who were marching.

Fight their intolerance with tolerance of their intolerance, whilst mocking it. Unless someone has a better idea...

@8, coulda fooled me and millions of other people.

As @1 said it was either give in or we Episcopalians would have left, along with the Anglicans in Canada.

Time to get real. Women can be bishops, just like Christ could marry Mary.

Sheryl@2: ELCA! I'm going to be in MN in a few weeks, excitedly taking services w/ good ELCA friends. Keep up the good fight (in the polite ELCA way, of course) down there in Louisiana! It's easy to be a liberal Christian up here in the north, but you're doing the heavy lifting...

WiS@12- you're a member of the Frozen Chosen? Nice.

Dominic,
I just read that the Presbyterians narrowly rejected a measure allowing a "covenant between two people":

Troll's getting a little antsy about this news. Must have struck a nerve.

@10 The Episcopal Church is a mover of the Anglican community. As far as I know, neither the Church of England, not the Anglican community at large have embraced same-sex unions, or even openly gay pastors/bishops. In fact, the community is greatly divided over the issues. The Episcopal Church may have gotten this far in part due to more conservative churches disassociating themselves from it in protest (some are even opposed to ordination of women).

But, looking at the Episcopal Church overall, this just reaffirms my opinion that the Episcopal Church is the next best thing to atheism, in terms of social progress.

Dom must not have read the article....

"The bishops of the Episcopal Church on Monday approved creation of a liturgy for “holy covenants” between partners of the same sex, which DOES NOT MENTION “MARRIAGE” but does include a lifelong commitment by partners....."

For quite some time now, I have been afraid that the Anglican/Episcopalian positions on homosexual issues might prove to be a stumbling block for its Muslim members. Unfortunately, they cannot "pope out" and swim the Tiber as Rome, in contrast to Canterbury, is a trifle sticky regarding belief in the Trinity and Incarnation. Pity, that.

Please wait...
