I always thought killing your darlings was more literally meant, as in killing your beloved characters for the sake of the narrative, or at least doing horrible things to them.

It's the words that are the darlings, and we may well be doing horrible things to them tonight. Further defacement? Transformation? Exorcism? Pick your poison.
