don't underestimate perverse political strategy here (i don't think that's a great danger here, but sometimes i worry); that is, Frank Chopp never did squat about gun control because he has a plan to extend the democrats eastward. not surprisingly, the republicans, including the newly minted (@#$!n) traitors, want to advance 'westward'. so don't be surprised if it becomes apparently the case that republicans move (slightly) on the gun control (where the democrats never did) ...sounds utterly nuts, i know, but that's the two party system -sigh-
3
your a awful person who is masturbating over the all these deaths because you find somthing unseemly
4
what sick is goldy is happy this happend it gives him ammunition for his causes. he is happy anytime this happens. he and the stranger are a huge part of the problem in america.
5
Okay, I figured out.

Now that a meaningless Marriage Equality initiative and a meaningless Pot Initiative wont get voters to elect hypocritical Milquetoast Democrats, concerned with keeping their high perks and benefits, another term, they need a new bogeyman.

So, lets see how the Gun Control Initiative, funded by a tax on pot and coal, does in 2014.

You can see it..a mile away.

ez availability of guns is to blame for this tragedy; the prime authors are politicians who got nra endorsement and backing and fostered the lies that guns don't kill, gun smake us safe, guns are protected under constitution, blah blah blah, all lies, just look at japan with its 10 or 20 deaths by gun a year and.....no violence plagued ghettos. now underclass of 20% condemned to not be able to plaly outside, left to rot by the dominant majority there. and no hundreds of millions of guns all over.

guns kill. thus, armies buy them. so do the zetas. so in america, the nra cult has helped spread all these guns all over like they are high def TVs or any normal consumer product. the shooter's mom had the guns. this let the becoming crazy kid get them and do the deed. this would not have happened in japan because a mom in japan would not have guns.

I think the anonowanker earned himself a time-out at #2.

@7:

I think the anonowanker earned himself a time-out at #2.

At the very least.

Better yet, a reminder that wanking (and threatening) anonymously doesn't hide one's IP address from Slog's web gurus.
9
Soon enough, Goldy will be telling everyone that Rodney Tom committed the massacre. What a fake-o "progressive" sack of shit you are, Goldy. Just as bad as your buddy McGinn.
10
Please ban the IP address @2.

I'm all for an open forum as possible but that is over every line that exists.
11
So whats its called when partisan hacks ( goldy and others) push for so called reforms that are unrelated to the current crime of the week?

Both recent shootings featured mentally unstable men, who stole firearms and committed insane acts of violence.

Debate of ideas is a cornerstone of our democracy. This is ambulance chasing, opportunistic evangelism and its disgusting.

Enjoy your moral podium with the abortion protesters.
12
your right goldys metaphors should lead to his banning.
13
GOLDY IS AN ADULT?! I learned something from the troll!
14
Here's a nice example of the sort of bill that could pass out of the Senate now, prime sponsored by GOP Senator Val Stevens last year:

http://apps.leg.wa.gov/documents/billdoc…

I think the strategy that says that Ed Murray should just get out of the way and let the GOP do what they want to do is the right one--it'll help all their "moderates" lose in 2014.
15
I'm all in favor of that bill.
16
@14, sure, that's a great idea. Let them burn up the safety net shreds that still exist and prevent any possibility of revenue being created. All to keep the two DINOs from being re-elected. That's a good tradeoff.

Slog could ban Mr. G also, since his trollish BS is posted on other sites under other names, all spitting venom at "progressives".
17
Mister G: what is fake about Goldy's (and others') progressivism? You probably explained somewhere, but I missed it.
18
@17

No. He's just a nutter who spews nonsense.
19
@2 - Really, just take a second and look at what you just wrote. You are so over the line by even thinking that sentiment that you are almost back at the line. And you call yourself a Christian... (pack your sunscreen)

Regardless of your rampant hatred for Goldy, and all things Goldy-like, having such negativity and hatred living within your soul is just sad sad sad. Maybe you think you will change some minds here, but instead you just expose yourself as a tremendously troubled human being by saying such a disgraceful thing. I hope you can somehow find some comfort in your existence some day.

According to the CDC, in the US, alcohol is either responsible or a major factor in 75,000 deaths a year, where as guns are responsible for around 30,000 (about half of which are suicides).

I mention this because I can't go to the Stranger's web-site or open a paper copy without seeing blatant promotion of alcohol culture. If the writers at the Stranger were truely concerned for the well-being of people they would be as up-in-arms, if not more, for alcohol reform. However, alcohol reform isn't a sexy issue.

Now, I know what some of you are thinking: "A (insert scary-sounding gun here) is meant for one purpose; killing people. And this is true, reduced to its most basic purpose. However, that would be like saying that alcohol's one purpose is killing brain cells. But most people don't drink alcohol to kill their brain cells, because it's most basic function, in spirit, is to allow it's user to loosen up and have fun. I would then argue that a gun's most basic function, in spirit, is to secure liberty against the threat of a tyrannical government.

So Stranger, if you're for gun control, I can't change that. But spare the rhetorical nonsense. The indignant tone of your gun articles is clearly done for the sensationalism, rather than the substance.
21
@20, what? Your false equivalence is giving me a headache. You can argue that a gun's most basic function is to secure liberty against the threat of a tyrannical government...but you'd be wrong. It's most basic function is to kill or at best, to intimidate.

You're overthinking it.
22
@21 the power of a gun to intimidate springs from its power to harm.
23
I don't understand what there is to debate. The crime of individuals isn't and shouldn't be a crime for everyone else. Yet this is what Americans keep repeating. We already have created a dangerous police society after 9/11, and now the emotional reaction to the outrageous slaughter of childern is to disarm our citizens?

For every person who thinks that is a solution they need to reflect on history and the 90 million people murdered by their own government over the last century. There are no arguments of any kind to arm with inferior weapons to those of a potential agressor.

A discussion of gun control is a discussion over enslavement. That is the proposition plain and simple.

How convient that the killers in both recent cases are themselves dead. Have you no questions about why that would be? Simple minded knee jerk reactions targeting ownship of firearms is plainly the express purpose of these shooting. I seriously doubt we are simply dealing with a distrubed individual in most recent case.

For one thing a review of the news not broadcast might be revealing. Wake up people, indeed there is an enemy inside the gates, but it isn't your neighbor and his prized gun collection.

24
@5 - Bailo shut the fuck up. Meaningless
my ass.

@9 - tell us again how the Dems are going to lose the last election, okay

@15 - Of course you are. You're in favor of being in the minority too, right? Must be, you voted for McKenna.

@23 - Are you really implying that people are shooting up elementary schools so the government can take your guns? Holy shit, you are insane.
25
@23. Uh, I think you may want this tinfoil hat I made for you.
26
Morgan Freeman sure hit the nail on the head: ignore cocksuckers like Goldy. Let him jerk off by himself in his basement like the shooters he so clearly admires.
27
I honestly thought it would take more than 36 hours before some one would spin this as a conspiracy that the "government" killed 20 kids to have an excuse to "take our GUNS11!!!1!!"
Guess I was wrong.
28
Mister G and Meanie are just gun nuts who are finally entering into full attack mode. Any values or principles they have will go on hold until/unless the discussion of gun control ceases. The sacred fetish must not be disrespected.
29
You will see that I am right. Washington state will loosen its gun laws in the coming months, not tighten them.

This is who we are. Your Obama-voting, pro-gay-rights neighbor is caressing his weapons right now, dreaming of the day he saves a child by heroically taking out an ethnically dubious gunman in almost impossible circumstances -- just like his right-wing counterpart. The fantasy owns us now, owns us all.
30
@29 FNARF, you are too right. dammit.
31
Where *are* the gun control initiatives, anyway? We've demonstrated that Seattle can overrule the rest of the state on those things. The legislature is useless. Our initiative process is broken so we might as well use it to reduce gun ownership in this state.
32
@29 FNARF, you are too right. dammit.
33
With over seven Billion people in the world is it even worth the fight?
Yes what happened is awful and even more so that children were involved but it is not guns. Guns did not kill those 28 people, a young man killed those people and he happened to use a gun.
The deaths that happened in this one event will overshadow the deaths of domestic abuse, drunk driving, drug overdose, suicide, accidental death and natural death and the list can go on and on.
The families of Newton and this tragedy will never be forgotten but what about everyone else who lost their life this week? The mother who was beaten to death or the father who took his own life, the 14 year old lesbian or gay man who took their life because they were different.
The death toll cannot be justified for any one cause and blame and finger pointing needs to be eliminated because fighting for one cause and debunking another is counter productive.
The Stranger who has fought so hard to change the Constitution to allow and accept Gay Marriage is Balls Deep in Changing the Constitution to eliminate a personal belief of others by owning a gun. Ironic?
34
@31, we have demonstrated no such thing. We can defeat the rest of the state on statewide candidates for office, but we can't defeat them in the legislature. In case you hadn't noticed, the Republicans control the state senate now. That means NOTHING WILL PASS. I very much doubt if a gun control bill will even come to a vote in that body.

Notice also that unlike some issues gun control is not strictly partisan. A ton of Democrats oppose even a hint of stronger standards as well.

The state legislature is more likely to pass a law mandating that teachers be armed than to pass one that contains even a cosmetic ban on anything.
35
@34 your so close to dropping the hyperbole I am hopeful.

Your right, the bill of rights are not a partisan issue, on the second, first or fourth. Having a clear understanding of that is a much more lucid view on complex social issues like angry white men dropping out of society and deciding to wage war against it.

however your note on armed teachers drops right back into wil in seattle territory. Democrats passed the Gun-Free School Zones Act of 1990 turning schools into shooting galleries.
The intention was to keep black teens from shooting each other, but in practical terms it prevented security offers, or even off duty police offers from being armed at or near schools.

Its fun to talk about rambo teachers, but preventing all schools from the *option* of having a off duty cop, as armed security presence under any circumstances seems just as absurd.
