Hey, this is the same church that dug up a dead and rotting corpse of a pope to bring him up on trial....TWICE!!!!

So this is just normal for the Holy Mother Whore Church.
2
Nobody is trying to change the foundations of your stupid little church. We would, however, like for you to join us in the 21st century. The invitation is extended.
4
Oh, well since he put it that way....
5
he's not crazy, he's a misogynist. naked women are the best thing on the planet, and that's not violence you're feeling, you asshole celibate.
6
@2 - Well, since the foundations of the church go way back to a time when they had unquestioned rule over the personal and public lives of everyone and everything in sight, then yes, I suppose some of us are trying to jimmy that little cornerstone out from under them once and for all.
7
Absolutely disgusting.

I look forward to watching the Holy Roman Catholic Church eat itself alive, as the Republican Party is now doing... I love watching the realization slowly, slowly dawn on these folks "Our base seems to be... shrinking... oh noes"

T'is sweet to see...
8
This is the pope that let priests rape little kids, so he really knows what's best for the family.
9

You know what else sounds like a "repudiation of of life-long commitment in heterosexual marriage"? The vow of celibacy that every Catholic priest and nun is required to take.
10
A false understanding of freedom?

You know, I thought Freedom was about equality and allowing people to live their lives as long as doing so doesn't infringe on the freedoms and rights of others.

I wish someone would enlighten me on how this is wrong.
11
padre pazzo is projecting.

change Father to Iman and this could be coming from the Taliban.

Thank you, Fathers, for EMBARRASSING ME.

The problem with the Church hierarchy is because 1. it has no women and 2. none of these guys have families and 3. because they don't associate closely enough with women and people who have families, they know very little about women's issues, gender dynamics and what makes good parents. They remember their own mothers, but that's it.

Guys, these are solvable problems! You don't want to ordain women or let priests marry? Well that would help, but you could also read lots of sociological studies on domestic violence, and we know you guys are into reading. You could read studies on families with same-sex parents. If you don't trust the Journal of the American Psychological Association, there are plenty of Catholic universities that could perform them.
15
My grandfather was a Protestant from Northern Ireland, so it's in my blood to hate the Catholic Church. However, they certainly make it easy for me. I can't wait for them to get so rectally introverted that they just implode. I hope I'm alive to see it.
16
I keep trying to come up with words accurate enough to convey my disgust and horror that this attitude is real among anyone, much less a man of God. No wonder so many women are abused, raped, beaten and humiliated every day.

What will it take for people to see that every single person on earth must be treated with respect and dignity? What would it look like if women, LGBTQ folk, those of all skin color, religious affiliation, cultural differences, and any other individual characteristic were actually just treated decently? Why the fuck are we all so damn insecure that we feel the need to destroy anything that feels remotely threatening? I want to live somewhere where I can walk down the street at night without worrying about being attacked just for being female. Never gonna happen.
17
@6 Very true, and if you ask me, the Church is better for not having so much political power as it used to. It's far less likely to attract politicians in priests' clothing.

@1 Comparing the Church of today to the Church of 897 a.d./c.e. is like comparing the government of England now to the government of England in 897. Of course the Church did stuff back them that seems off its rocker today. So did almost every other large organization, and, as Father Corsi has shown, there is no dearth of modern ignorance and WTF to complain about.
18
@8- well those sexy little tempters are just tools of the devil leading good men of the cloth astray don't you know... if he wasn't the one who said that it was someone just like him.
And ooh isn't this Displacement 101- "you made me beat you senseless!"
19
I'm going to enjoy seeing himself twist himself into knots as marriage equality becomes more and more wide spread.
20
"The" Church is turning into a really melodramatic graphic novel of itself. It's the kind of third-rate graphic novel that is completely tiresome because the characters are so one-note, and preposterously exaggerated, and the plot so juvenile and obvious, that there's nothing to be had from reading it, even if the art is okay. Benny is just too two-dimensional a villain to even take seriously.
21
The Catholic Church is a lot like many Republicans...they just don't get it. Luckily most Italians don't go to church and most don't care what the Pope has to say.
22
@16 - Actually, while it is only a temporary city, Burning Man is an incredibly safe place for women to walk at night. I'm fully serious. You could attend the Michigan Women's Music Festival too, for a similar dose of sanity.

@7 - The Catholic church isn't going to eat itself out from the inside. Their base is actually in Africa and Latin America... only in Western Europe and USA/Canada is their (very liberal) base shrinking. This is their basic conflict: How to not alienate the rich Westerners too much, while fomenting religious fervor amongst the African and Latin American Catholics. Arguably their base is actually growing. Sadly. They will only inflict more cultural and literal harm on people there. Fuckers.

I, for one, am glad that the Vatican doesn't command an army any more, at least.
23
@10 No, freedom is the right to tell everybody else what they aren't allowed to do. Didn't you know that?
24
@17, the English government has reformed itself..the catholic church hasn't.
25
This is a culture that venerates a virgin raped by their god. Maybe that explains their twisted views. Jesus was a rape baby.
26
@ 22 The proportion of catholics went down 12 % in Mexico between the last two census (2000/2010), from 92 to 80%. It's still a lot, but it's shrinking fast.

Add to that the fact that Mexico City has gay marriage (and all other Mexican states must recognize unions celebrated in M.C.) and that various South American countries have also adopted similar measures, I would say that the catholic church is losing both its base and its power in Latin America.

That's why they're in a panic.
27
Pope Rat & his fellow Catholic pedophiles should be on trial at The Hague for their crimes against humanity.

How can any thinking person continue to support & fund these weirdos? ...I do have to admit, though, they do have fabulous dresses & party hats!
28
After "condoms worsen the AIDS crisis," I'm not surprised by anything the Catholic clergy spits out. Although I wasn't surprised before that either, so... *shrug*
29
@1 -- You do realise "whore" is not an insult, right?
30
is Pope Rat really 85? he will most likely be dead in 2 yrs. who is in line to take over?
31
(sigh) The part about "condoms make AIDS worse" was particularly embarrassing. But they'll come around. They always do. Isaac Newton's book about the solar system was initially condemned by the church. One hundred years later, it was required reading in every Catholic university.

@24 Ever heard of the Vatican Ecumenical Council? There were two of them. The church has reformed itself, more than once.

@25 The part where Mary gives her permission for Christ's birth is a major element in the story.

@30 They say that Pope Benedict/Cardinal Ratzinger was chosen in part for his age. The college of cardinals didn't want a Pope who would have a multi-decade tenure like Pope John Paul XXIII did.
32
@16 - SeattleKim

Move to Berlin, Germany - my wife did just do that many times while we lived there a few years ago.
Very liberal, open-minded, with a gay mayor (who likes to be a politician more than serving the city, though). A bit dirty, but also dirt-cheap to live in. Awesome public transportation, tons of subsidized cultural stuff of any kind. Awesome parks and ponds/lakes within the city.
Low on religious crap.
And much more.

Never say never.
33
Who's John Paul XXIII?
34
@31: er, why? Not that I'm saying I WANT Pope Benedict to stick around for a long time, but wouldn't that be desirable for the church, if the alternative is having to select a new pope every few years? I would think they'd want the continuity.
35
@34 - Part of it is keeping a check on the papacy. As long as the pope is alive, there's not much the cardinals can do to steer the course of the church, but every time they get to elect a new pope is a new opportunity for them to make some decisions about where things are going.

I also see a lot of (probably unintentional) symbolic meaning in replacing a wildly popular, liberal (as far as popes go) youngish man with the stodgiest, grumpiest, old-timiest, Nazi-tie-havinest old fart they could find. It really felt like the cardinals wanted to double down on the old ways.
36
@33 Darn it. I always Freudian slip John Paul II with Pope John XXIII, who convened the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council. Fascinating story, that. At first all the research groups and committees come up with all these liberal conclusions, then, before the council ends, John XXIII dies and his much more conservative successor undoes half his stuff.

Example, John XXIII asked for a study about the rhythm method. The results came back as "It doesn't work and it's bad for the marriage bond." The successor said, "Nice work, brothers. Do it again." They came back with another study that said "It doesn't work and it's bad for the marriage bond." He said, "Nice work, brothers. Do it again," and they repeated as necessary until they had a study that said "It works and it's good for the marriage bond."

@34 Pretty much because they didn't want one guy in charge of the whole church for a long time again.
37
@DRF

"The Philippines President...has signed into law a bill providing for free access to contraception and family planning...[T]he law, which took 14 years to pass, will reduce poverty and maternal mortality in a country with the highest birth rate in the region. The Roman Catholic Church repeatedly tried to block the bill."

But that's okay right? Because the RCC does so much other good, and will catch up with humanity in a hundred years or so, right?

Right?
38
Thank goodness we live in a democracy where the words of Catholic bigots (and those of Protestant theocrats) hold no sway.
39
You know, as a recovering Catholic (well, less recovering from the Catholic Church per se than some of the bizarre social bullshit that trickles down to its members, but that's another therapy session) - I have to say that most of the time this stuff... I don't know, my only response is to just laugh. But every once in a while there's something that so illustrates the misogyny in the institution that I want to travel through the internet and beat the shit out of fuckers like this priest. Violence is crude, but I hate the idea that women are supposed to remain cheerful in the face of such hatred and "work within the system" to change things. Fuck that. I ain't staying at a restaurant where I not only get poor service, the management actively LOATHES me and barely tolerates me in an institutional sense. Unless, of course, it's to run the office, teach the classes, pick up after the priests in their living quarters etc. etc. etc.

Fuck 'em.
41
@37 Yes, that is right. The Church will catch on and catch up and it tends to take about a hundred years. In the meantime it continues to feed, clothe, educate and advocate for the poor and underprivileged.
42
Wow. This Pope's a real drama queen.
"...the key figures of human existence likewise vanish: father, mother, child—essential elements of the experience of being human are lost."
Seriously? C'mon, I *know* you guys can read, so you should know the difference between social structures and the *actual* experience of being human.
43
You know, until the Catholic Church allows priests to marry, starts ordaining women, or both, it's going to continue to be run by old farts who have managed to go through life without ever having had to deal with women as equals.
44
This quote is telling: "... what do you feel when you see a naked woman? Is it not a woman's violence to unveil herself that way?"

What this tells me is that when Corsi looks at a naked woman, he is so provoked by his own lust and shame that he wants to kill her. He's not really telling us anything about the woman. He's telling us about his own violent rage and his unwillingness to take responsibility for it.

You see the same thing whenever someone talks about other people's sins. The crazier the are, the likelier that they're projecting their own frustrated desires. See also: child-rape apologists who argue that sometimes the kids are asking for it, and closeted homphobes who try to codify their self-hate into law. Pointing outward is an easy way to avoid taking a personal inventory.

Other people who scare me: the "no morality without religion" types. Those people are basically saying, "Without Jesus, I have no understanding of right and wrong and am liable to do anything."
45
@43 or, as @42 has suggested, they can read actual sociological studies about gender, violence and family dynamics. There are many Catholic universities that could perform them if they don't trust other sources.
46
Fuck the Catholic Church, Fuck the Catholic hierarchy, and Fuck that evil fuck Pope Palpatine and his horde of cronie, child molester protecting cardinals.
47
They way the Catholic Church is structured, laypeople who want to express displeasure with the church in a way the hierarchy will pay attention to have only two options: stop giving money, and/or leave the church entirely.

Also, anyone want to take bets on how long before Father Corsi gets arrested for molesting an underage girl and/or caught with a prostitute? (This guy's celibacy-induced psychosis is clearly way too woman-focused for him to be gay.)
48
Fr. Corsi just misses the good old days when Church opponents could be executed.
