So this is just normal for the Holy Mother Whore Church.
I look forward to watching the Holy Roman Catholic Church eat itself alive, as the Republican Party is now doing... I love watching the realization slowly, slowly dawn on these folks "Our base seems to be... shrinking... oh noes"
T'is sweet to see...
You know what else sounds like a "repudiation of of life-long commitment in heterosexual marriage"? The vow of celibacy that every Catholic priest and nun is required to take.
You know, I thought Freedom was about equality and allowing people to live their lives as long as doing so doesn't infringe on the freedoms and rights of others.
I wish someone would enlighten me on how this is wrong.

The problem with the Church hierarchy is because 1. it has no women and 2. none of these guys have families and 3. because they don't associate closely enough with women and people who have families, they know very little about women's issues, gender dynamics and what makes good parents. They remember their own mothers, but that's it.
Guys, these are solvable problems! You don't want to ordain women or let priests marry? Well that would help, but you could also read lots of sociological studies on domestic violence, and we know you guys are into reading. You could read studies on families with same-sex parents. If you don't trust the Journal of the American Psychological Association, there are plenty of Catholic universities that could perform them.
What will it take for people to see that every single person on earth must be treated with respect and dignity? What would it look like if women, LGBTQ folk, those of all skin color, religious affiliation, cultural differences, and any other individual characteristic were actually just treated decently? Why the fuck are we all so damn insecure that we feel the need to destroy anything that feels remotely threatening? I want to live somewhere where I can walk down the street at night without worrying about being attacked just for being female. Never gonna happen.
@1 Comparing the Church of today to the Church of 897 a.d./c.e. is like comparing the government of England now to the government of England in 897. Of course the Church did stuff back them that seems off its rocker today. So did almost every other large organization, and, as Father Corsi has shown, there is no dearth of modern ignorance and WTF to complain about.

@7 - The Catholic church isn't going to eat itself out from the inside. Their base is actually in Africa and Latin America... only in Western Europe and USA/Canada is their (very liberal) base shrinking. This is their basic conflict: How to not alienate the rich Westerners too much, while fomenting religious fervor amongst the African and Latin American Catholics. Arguably their base is actually growing. Sadly. They will only inflict more cultural and literal harm on people there. Fuckers.
I, for one, am glad that the Vatican doesn't command an army any more, at least.
Add to that the fact that Mexico City has gay marriage (and all other Mexican states must recognize unions celebrated in M.C.) and that various South American countries have also adopted similar measures, I would say that the catholic church is losing both its base and its power in Latin America.
That's why they're in a panic.
How can any thinking person continue to support & fund these weirdos? ...I do have to admit, though, they do have fabulous dresses & party hats!
@24 Ever heard of the Vatican Ecumenical Council? There were two of them. The church has reformed itself, more than once.

@30 They say that Pope Benedict/Cardinal Ratzinger was chosen in part for his age. The college of cardinals didn't want a Pope who would have a multi-decade tenure like Pope John Paul XXIII did.
Move to Berlin, Germany - my wife did just do that many times while we lived there a few years ago.
Very liberal, open-minded, with a gay mayor (who likes to be a politician more than serving the city, though). A bit dirty, but also dirt-cheap to live in. Awesome public transportation, tons of subsidized cultural stuff of any kind. Awesome parks and ponds/lakes within the city.
Low on religious crap.
And much more.

I also see a lot of (probably unintentional) symbolic meaning in replacing a wildly popular, liberal (as far as popes go) youngish man with the stodgiest, grumpiest, old-timiest, Nazi-tie-havinest old fart they could find. It really felt like the cardinals wanted to double down on the old ways.
Example, John XXIII asked for a study about the rhythm method. The results came back as "It doesn't work and it's bad for the marriage bond." The successor said, "Nice work, brothers. Do it again." They came back with another study that said "It doesn't work and it's bad for the marriage bond." He said, "Nice work, brothers. Do it again," and they repeated as necessary until they had a study that said "It works and it's good for the marriage bond."

Seriously? C'mon, I *know* you guys can read, so you should know the difference between social structures and the *actual* experience of being human.
What this tells me is that when Corsi looks at a naked woman, he is so provoked by his own lust and shame that he wants to kill her. He's not really telling us anything about the woman. He's telling us about his own violent rage and his unwillingness to take responsibility for it.
You see the same thing whenever someone talks about other people's sins. The crazier the are, the likelier that they're projecting their own frustrated desires. See also: child-rape apologists who argue that sometimes the kids are asking for it, and closeted homphobes who try to codify their self-hate into law. Pointing outward is an easy way to avoid taking a personal inventory.
Other people who scare me: the "no morality without religion" types. Those people are basically saying, "Without Jesus, I have no understanding of right and wrong and am liable to do anything."
Also, anyone want to take bets on how long before Father Corsi gets arrested for molesting an underage girl and/or caught with a prostitute? (This guy's celibacy-induced psychosis is clearly way too woman-focused for him to be gay.)
