I live in Kitsap County and have never licensed my pets because the form asks for proof that the pets were spayed or neutered. They were, but I have no proof, and there is no way I'm going to waste money on a vet so I can file this nonsense paperwork.
The county has missed out on a hundred or more of licensing fees due to this rule. But it costs a lot more for an "unaltered" license and the penalty for not having a license is much less than a vet visit, so I don't see any reason to comply. Making it possible to comply with bureaucratic nonsense makes it more likely people will.
King County, FWIW, appears to at least take your word that your animal was "altered".
"Informal offleash dog park"? If it's the one I'm thinking of: KEEP YOUR GODDAMN DOG AWAY FROM THE PLAYGROUND, IF MY KID KEEPS GETTING KNOCKED DOWN HE'S GOING TO GROW UP TO BE AN ANTI-DOG ACTIVIST, I SWEAR TO GOD.
Oh, and thanks for the tip, my cat's license is way overdue!
In Des Moines, not only do we need to provide proof that the pet is "altered", we need proof of an up-to-date rabies vaccine. Those need to be done every year, which requires a vet visit. The vet won't do the vaccination without an exam. So, the $25 license very quickly becomes $100.00. Fucking scam.
Indoor only cats can sometimes accidentally get out. When the indoor-only cats I knew managed to, they tended to get overwhelmed and stay close to the house where they could be scooped back up and put back inside, but a more inquisitive cat might accidentally get out and then it could be a problem. Unless you have a fantastic double-door setup, which would make it much less likely, but generally people just have to be careful when going in and out of the house, and over the span of years, a slip-up can happen.
Not worried about my cat. She's got her license and the tabs on her 2013 BMW are all current. But she wasn't happy about the insurance rates she's been getting from Purrrgressive. Nearly coughed up a fur ball when she looked at her last bill.
@7 They go to the vet regularly. However, one dog is a rescue from a kill shelter in Oregon who was fixed before I got her. Another dog is a rescue from a puppy mill in Eastern Washington who was fixed before I got him. And the last is a cat which used to belong to my mother who was fixed before I got her (the cat not my dear departed mother).
I suppose I could get a letter from the vet which says that they were obviously fixed, but what the county wants is a copy of the receipt for the actual visit where they were fixed. No, I haven't called them or anything. How much work should I do to pay them this nonsense fee?
@15 when you register your cat, you can enter their microchip numbers with the city. So if your indoor cat ever gets outdoors and is picked up by animal control (or ends up in a shelter) they are more likely to be brought home. That is the reason I keep up to date with my cats' tags.
Does anyone know a vet who makes house calls? My cat is a complete wreck in the car: wets/shits herself and wails as loud as a car horn. Thus she's late on her exam/shots.
I'm not price sensitive on the house-call thing. Anything will seem like a bargain by comparison.
Seconding @19. She was my angel of death for my poor worn out kitty a couple of years ago.
On a grumpier note, it would be easier to keep up on my fucking pet licenses if the pound could be arsed to set up an email reminder program like every other fucking bill in my life. That said I cried tears of joy when my lolo cat got lost and they called me. Yay, the pound! And microchips!!
Yes, I know I could set a google calendar alert or something.
I like it.

He's a handsome devil tho'...
How about dust bunnies?
