"Many sources say that Bertha is a reference to Bertha Krupp, heiress and owner of the Krupp industrial empire." The original Big Bertha was a massive German howitzer in WWI, called "Dicke Bertha". The name was adopted by the Allies, and later came to be applied to any machinery that's really big.
