Fuck, that's awesome. And "hard science fiction" gives me such a Party Down nostalgiaboner...

I think this was the sub plot for Stargate Universe, in that a message was embedded into the background noise from the big bang.

Meh. The sound is familiar to anyone who's dabbled with electronic music. It's just a decay function with a bit of modulation.

About the only thing interesting is the warble in the first second or two. It comes damn close to the "sting" effect at the start of the closing credits to the classic Doctor Who series.

The sound of a vacuum becoming spacetime? Cold becoming hot? Atoms forming?

This is being sampled by, like, every electronic artist starting now.

I've been thinking about this. What was there before the universe? It's not really a vacuum, is it? Because, rather than an enormous blast, I thought it sounded more like something being ripped open. As if the pressure wasn't outwards but inwards. As if what was there before played a defining role in creating the "Big Bang".

If a universe explodes into existence in a forest, and no one is there to hear it, does it still make a sound?

Please wait...
