'Veritable' is generally used to intensify a metaphor. I think what you'd like to say something like "a veritable shitload of gear as well as shit itself." As it stands, 'veritable' does nothing to intensify 'amount of gear' because amount is not a metaphor, and amount can't really be intensified anyway.

My current National Geographic issue (June) has a feature article on Mt. Everest and why there are way too many climbers on the peak. It also discusses ways to alleviate that:

I'm just hoping that "Leave No Trace" can become a global ethic. I first learned it as a rock climber/camper. It does seem to be spreading somewhat.

Its a subset of the "Campsite Rule": Leave it better than you found it. If only humans would do this, generally...

The gumbies and glory seekers can have Everest. It helps to keep the garbage and riff-raff off the other mountains.

They could alleviate the pressure of too many climbers on Everest by taking every prospective climber and holding his head underwater for an hour as part of the application process.
