Just heard Alaska's increasing fees for checked bags. Now I know where that money is going -- to keeping initiatives off the ballot. Nice.

Thanks for posting the brief. Korrell is one of the guys who got the U.S. Supreme Court to throw out the Seattle School District's plan to be able to use a racial tiebreaker to try to prevent resegregation. In his dissent, Justice Stevens wrote, "It is my firm conviction that no Member of the Court that I joined in 1975 would have agreed with today's decision." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parents_Inv…

So this guy gets results. Unfortunately.

Do the workers have any buttons or stickers? I wouldn't mind sporting something with "Pay SeaTac workers a fair wage" when I 'm at the airport (or anywhere else, I guess).
4
I always preferred flying on Alaska, often against my better judgment. Not anymore.
5
IF these workers don't like the low wages they should apply to be interns at the Stranger, right?
6
Of course the Restaurant Association is going to sue, if minimum wage ends up being 15$ an hour, how are they going to keep management positions when you can work as an entry level waiter/server and make 15 an hour plus tips?
7
Mr kinison, if the minimum goes up in the port of seattle, just remember that most of the ports employees will spend more money inside the ports businesses including the restaurant's. And also, most of the restaurants doesn't make its employees keep its tips nor do they split the tips to its employees. I am sure this initiative will pass regarding what alaska is trying to do because the ports employees who went out collecting signatures collected more than double the amount of signatures needed for this intiative to pass for the upcoming novembers ballot. I believe and support seatac workers in getting a fair and livable wage because I myself have seen how much they work, and the pace they have to move to keep the ports economy sucessful. Everybody deserves a wage to live by. -SYL JR

Just an FYI, the WRA is a max donor for the Murray campaign.
9
If all these uneducated, non-english speaking folks want to earn $15/hr, they should start with learning some new skills.
10
If these folks want to make $15/hr, perhaps they should try learning some new skills starting with how to speak english.
11
So, the WRA is supporting Murray while Local 8 has called McGinn the "most progressive mayor in America." I wonder who has working people's backs?

If this initiative applies only to airport workers, then it is completely out of line. The ordinance must apply to ALL employers within the city.

Personally, I'm against the concept, anyway. Minimum wages aren't meant to be sufficient wages for living. I agree with hqdf -- the road to getting paid more is to develop some skills that employers are willing to pay for. Yes, times are tough right now, but that's nothing new.

Sadly, this measure is going to hurt the people who need the minimum wage jobs the most. Raising up the minimum to $15 makes these 'skilled jobs' and many of the companies will not be able to support the number of workers and specifically the unskilled and teen workers. NPR has done some good reporting on this that is pretty even-handed. Another thing to consider here is that this is an attempt by the SEIU to unionize SeaTac, not some actual grass-roots effort (this is the very definition of Astroturfing.) Some entry level jobs are meant to be just that - ENTRY LEVEL. There are teenagers who don't need to 'support a family', but who would certainly love $9.19/hour.

I don't care if some restaurants go under, so long as a big majority of workers has its standard of living improved. we can do without most low-margin restaurants

I wonder how many of the employees are actually registered to vote in the town

You obviously never studied economics; all pricing is based off of minim wage.
Within one year of increasing minim wage to $15 a majority of necessity items will double in price.
Landlords charge what the market can support so an apartment that is currently $800 will become $1600
All restaurants will need to increase prices from 25% to 50% just to stay open.
Milk will go from $3 to $6
Beer from $9 to $17
Service based business will have no chose but to pass the increase along and Optec will certainly take advantage and increase the cost of gas substantially.
