For what it's worth, the popularity in certain circles of a thing like Savage is a symptom of a deep ill in our society. If such a pervert wants to keep his sickness between himself and a competent mental health professional I could care less about him. If he wants to spread his filthiness, evangelize it, he's a legitimate target of derision.

That Savage suffers from the mental illness whose primary symptom is sexual desire for others of the same sex is sad for him. But that isn't the reason he's a deviant and a pervert.
That would be his promiscuity and attempts to normalize it. It would be his forcing a young boy to grow up in a home with two men who should never in a rational universe have been entrusted with a child. It would be his attempts to spread profoundly unhealthy sexual practices on radio programs, college campuses and television. Were he straight and behaving this way I'd feel the same repugnance for him.
Anyway, I'm in favor of keeping him around, because unlike the pure troll, who only wants to enrage and inflame, SB possesses a comically inflated sense of intellect, and seems to believe that he is capable of stating winning arguments (which he won't allow to be burdened by things like "facts" over "evidence") and of occupying the moral high ground, while not seeing how comments like those @8 expose how untrue that is. Such errors of moral judgment happen when you believe things like not swearing have any moral import whatsoever.
Anyway, raku, you should be aware that one of the qualities that make liberalism/progressivism superior to reactionary conservatism like SB's is the fact that we walk the walk on things like free speech. Let SB have his say, and the rest of us will feed him his words.
As for his father, that's anyone's guess. Just about any guy who passed through the Greyhound station could be the culprit, as long as he had a buck fifty or some Fiddle-Faddle.
I'm just glad he was able to sign up for that program that lets people like him have some Internet time. I hate to think of him spending all his time in that basement all alone. It's just not healthy.

All true, except when they have banned hate speech that's much worse than this. There are degrees. (In my experience with you, you seem to have trouble comprehending or accepting gray areas, so you may not see how SB's remarks here aren't as bad as others.)

This isn't "most progressive blogs and forums," this is SLOG. And I don't think much of blogs that police comments in that fashion. They have more in common with Redstate than my idea of what's progressive.
Oppression isn't the state of hearing what you don't like to hear, or reading what you don't like to read. Don't cheapen the word's meaning, when billions of people can't even complain about what they don't like, as you can.

I now understand that my erstwhile homosexuality was a sick, perverted, evil choice. I have told my roommate (whom I formerly referred to as my 'husband'--bleh) that he is expunged from my heart. I now desire to marry a woman and live a normal life in a biblically sanctified marriage.

Dan Savage is the Editorial Director of the Stranger and the person under attack here. You don't get to tell him how to deal with it.
The Slog has it's own little way of moderating, and rough and tumble though it may be, I think they do a pretty good job. The batshit are left unmolested, as are the sad and weird. You can't start banning people for being assholes. If we did that it would be just you and Phoebe in Wallingford sitting around exchanging recipes left. The really vile and ugly voices get the boot, over and over until they get tired or start to behave.
Seattleblues is a pompous ass of limited intelligence, and as such makes an excellent cat toy for the Sloggers. He's an idiot and his opinion can't hurt you, so why not have a little fun Raku and see if you can rile him up?
And, "you can't start banning people for being assholes"? Check jezebel, gawker, any other site similar in concept to Slog. They ban or moderate bigots and assholes, and they're doing just fine. Maybe one reason why the best writer to ever come out of Slog (Lindy West) feels more comfortable there...

I encompass several of these categories and when the slurs happen, I just have fun taking down the assholes behind them. I don't let them rile me to the point I act like a stereotypical PC-obsessed light-sensitive liberal calling foul and asking someone to make the meanies go away. Because that's them winning.
The Gawkerverse has plenty of hate spitting jack holes on its many sites. It is not all sun shine and Kumbya over there by any stretch either. For the record, I would dearly love Seattleblues to go away forever. Second choice would be to have Sloggers stop feeding the troll. However, neither of those things are something I can make happen.
So I gird my loins and wade in, knowing what I'll find. There are enough kindred spirits here to give me deep pleasure.
And when it gets to be too much, I skim or just stop reading. Because that is indeed something I can control.
I don't care about me getting attacked, either. I don't mind it & kinda like it, as Matt from Denver and other Slog pals can tell you.
I do care that this is the only prolific, interesting progressive news source and it seems tailored to gatekeep so only the butchest and meanest feel welcome.
There's a very good reason why Slog now has a 3:1 man:woman ratio. Same reason my woman and queer friends tell me they all "used to read Slog". It's sad and unjust that we can't get progressive news in Seattle without a side of hate speech.
Also- "the level of moderation" I'm asking for isnt much. Either a +/- button that comes standard on all websites these days (even free speech fundietown Reddit!), or Slog workers to delete/ban people who say blatantly bigoted things. Like, right now tea party rallies are more safe from hate speech than Slog.
Raku, I hear you on the "privilege" thing, but I'm afraid the word has begun to have negative connotations for people due to it's near exclusive use by snot-nosed, know it all college kids. I'm white, straight, slim, able-bodied, middle class, am American-born, a property owner, and live in a progressive area of the country. I have a job (right now) and health insurance (lousy health insurance - right now - this time last year, I didn't). I benefit from the automatic privileges those things grant me, yet I'm also female, middle aged, and without a college degree - three things that reduce my value (and power) in the world's eyes (and in reality) considerably.
Like you, I've felt my frustrations and rage at the dominant power structure, in my case, particularly when it comes to women's issues, abortion, etc. (If I had dime for the number of guys I've encountered in my life and online - who otherwise call themselves liberal and/or progressive - who fall all over themselves to condemn racism, while at the same time scoffing at the notion that sexism even exists ...) So yes, in some cases it's justified, but I'm afraid hurling the "privileged !!" "insult" left and right pretty much only serves to shut people down. Because. So often the hurler is privileged in some (usually major) way to the point where they don't even see it - for example, being young, able bodied, and college educated. Most of us don't go around thinking, well what about the folks in wheelchairs? What about the bipolar folks? What about people with facial deformities? What oppressions do they face every day? Because it's not - for the vast majority - our immediate experience. Nor, I'm guessing, is it yours. You therefore experience a privilege, or several - every day - that you undoubtedly take for granted. That's my take on the deal, anyway.
I really wish they would moderate out more of those hatemongers.

Having been to many church camps as a kid and having fond memories of them I can tell you that your sick weird fantasies about them have no basis in reality. Sorry to disappoint.
