I knew that those maids from the Hyatt at Olive 8 who sent my grandmother a cloth scrap and McGinn endorsement were rabble-rousers. You're not going to influence my sweet grandmother to vote for McGinn Min Yi and Ruyao Li .

I gotta say that's pretty brave for workers to say boycott my own hotel. Who cares what they say about the mayor, that election will come and go but fighting for rights on the job lasts longer than just a 4 year term
3
Good luck to them.

@1 - Wow, you hate McGinn so much that you'd shit over housekeepers on the first comment of a post that isn't even about him? That's low.

Also, fuck you.

Back at you Pridge. Maybe you didn't read what those workers wrote about McGinn giving them all sorts of rights already - more money, sick days, respect, and ability to support their families.

Are the non-maids trying to unionize because the ones who wrote the letter make it sound like McGinn's already fixed this.

The new democracy is three workers and an NGO of professional white collar "activists". Soon to be three NGOs and a government of professional white collar activists. Oh wait, we already have that.

Business are not obligated to provide salaries that meet the financial wants of their employees. Other than meeting the minimum wage, which I agree should be raised, they are under no obligation to become a union shop if they don't want to. If you disagree with these principles, then you should quickly realize how difficult it would be to start and maintain a business if your socialistic wishes were to become law in our current capitalist economy.

@4 - Um, what? I just read said flyer (you linked to it) and I don't understand how "make a little more money and have sick days off so we can support our families better" translates to "everything is fixed" unless you either have an axe to grind or you've shitty reading comprehension. Perhaps in your case it's both.

My best wishes to your sweet grandmother if you're the one influencing her. She undoubtedly needs it.

@6 - There are so many moronic things in what you posted that I wouldn't know where to begin. I'll just leave it at that.

"The powerful developers who are demanding help from the city to build big hotels for conventions are trying to deny us women who clean the rooms a fair job to work our way out of poverty."

This statement sure sounds like the two emploees of Hyatt at Olive 8 who signed it (and paid for it by union dues to the union they already are members of). The protest is about management opposing the unionizing... and the housekeepers are already unionized. WTF. Yes, "everything" is fixed... global warming, slog loudmouth assh0les, and there's a bike lane on every street.

@7 fine I'll do it. *sigh*.

@6 If you read Adam Smith, or grasp what Henry Ford meant and did when he thought "hey I need to pay my employees enough to buy my product". You'd grasp that when it comes to needs, wants, and obligations in an economic relationship things are elastic, dynamic, they evolve or crash. What is a want one day, a luxury even, may evolve to become a necessity, a need.

Hell that is the fucking point of enterprise, to push those wants to become needs.

As for a business's obligation to become a union shop, weak as the law is, yeah yes they are under that obligation.

Know it or not your work day schedule, demands, and compensation owes far more to Unions then to Ayn Rand and her nonsense. Regardless of whether your in a union job or not, even a job that was never unionised. Hell a business owner for that matter.

What about Bellevue?

@7: In other words, you do not have the intellectual capacity to address viewpoints that challenge your provincial sensibilities?
12
@11 LOL wimp.
13
@11 - You should respond to @9.

@12 - RIGHT? (and thanks!)
14
@11 your arguments are consistently void of any substance. Rather you play to your own make believe gallery with appeals to your own self-evident truths backed up with nothing. Anyone that has read a handful of your posts is obligated to do no more than frown and scroll right past your dismissive bluster.

@14 - Well put.

I've worked at Hyatt at Olive 8 since it opening. We hourly employees signed a petition against UniteHere and yet they still continue to harass us at our homes and at our workplace. If you want to know the truth about how we feel please talk to an actual Hyatt employee instead of someone on UniteHere's Payroll.

I'm pretty sure these workers are NOT already in the union--nor are they paying union dues. That's the whole freakin' point, people. It seems like a no-brainer to me that people deserve a say on whether or not to form a union without their bosses/owners scaring them, intimidating them, launching a "charm" offensive. Another example of underpaid immigrant workers standing up to white millionaire bosses. Kudos!

Please wait...
