Respectable = shitty turnout, especially since 2/3 of the folks out there were professional agitators.
2
Today is also the One Day Anniversary of Goldie's historic slog post which connects MLK and Fast Food workers. NPR will be doing a live twitterfeed of the events all evening.

@1: Ooh, agitators. I hope the Tea Party Second Amendment Patriot Squad was out there to teach those communist leeches a lesson, if you know what I mean...
4
@3 No of course not. Tea Baggers have no idea that its been the Koch brothers all along who have been tickling and pulling their sack.
5
Anyone find it interesting that nothing got smashed, there wasn't a riot police beat down or the like?

Props to the movement for being so wonderfully level-headed.
6
@2 You know what's weird? That I'm such a sucky blogger, and yet you're the one reading and commenting on my posts, instead of the other way around. Go figure.
7
How about some news on how this worked out for other cities?

Paid staffers and NGO volunteers, which make of the bulk of these rallies do not constitute a movement. There is a reason why the rallies rove around; the same 25 people cannot be in two or twelve places at once. There are no more then 2-3 people per store "walking out". If this were a real campaign, led by employees, it would be worth supporting. But the practical goal is merely to goad employers into firing workers so that the NGOs can build legal leverage. Everyone knows that these places pay shit and treat their workers like dirt. Dog bites man. But...

All this campaign will do is jade people when it fizzles, making it harder for a genuine effort to take hold. And Goldy might have a job doing PR for Working Washington or SEIU at the end of the day, instead of advocating for unionizing the Stranger. Whe do you expect from an east coast sports meathead who is just the left wing version of Dori Monson, but no less annoying?

Pay your interns Stranger! Its easy to say it, but if you honestly believe minimum wage should be raised to 15$ an hour, put your money where your mouth is and pay your interns the same amount.
10
so did rancho bravo workers strike too? the baristas at oddfellows? or cafe vita? they don't get paid 15 bucks an hour, right?
11
Just a point of clarification for those of you who are interested: The Stranger no longer has an internship program. Earlier this year, we switched to an apprenticeship program. These are paid positions, they last six months, and there are three apprenticeships at the paper: an apprenticeship in the news department, one working with the arts editors, and one dedicated to the music section. When a paid apprenticeship slot opens, we'll post it right here on Slog.
12
paid position=minumum wage, not $15 an hour
13
@11 That is good news. And the pay for those positions is at least $15 an hour, right? Because if it's not, the Stranger continues to have zero credibility to ask other firms to pay $15 an hour.

Please wait...
