It's a speech, all right.
2
Ditto on #1.

As a public education activist, I'll weigh in on the education portion.

First off, I'd love to know what "make education at every level of the foundation of the city's work" would look like.

"Tool in the toolbox?" Tired and an ed reform favorite.

Okay, so he restates the achievement gap as an opportunity gap. So what? What supports does he propose beyond universal preschool.

On dual-language programs, popularity does not = success. How does he know they are effective? What's his data?

And I REALLY would like to know how he is going to make sure that teachers have the PD and training they need (but I'm not sure if he means to teach dual-language or to be culturally competent).
3
It's not bad, but I am not sure I trust him on transit. I do trust him on the police. So half up half down.
4
Wait, you guys grew mustaches?!
5
Koom-by-yah! (Sorry don't know how to spell that)
6
yeah Murray's a credible not-McGinn. there were other more credible not-McGinns but you gotta go with what you're offered.

McGinn's "substantive policy proposals", eh? like his regressive soda tax? (get them thirsty poor folks... why there goes one now - get 'em!)

wait... "mustachioed hipsters"? when did Dominic grow a mustache?
7
I didn't hear enough about why $1200 for a studio on Capitol Hill is acceptable.
8
What's up with Stranger writers "not having time for blah blah mayor's race something something?" Y'all usually jack off all over that stuff
9

. And we’ll work to reverse the recent trends that make Seattle unaffordable for too many people

And I thought Kshama Sawant was blowing colon gas in people's faces? How do these local yokels think they are going to reverse trends in global finance!

Diagnosis of the day for Seattle politicians...

A delusion of grandeur is the fixed, false belief that one possesses superior qualities such as genius, fame, omnipotence, or wealth. It is most often a symptom of schizophrenia, but can also be a symptom found in psychotic or bipolar disorders, as well as dementia (such as Alzheimer’s).

That education part is a real piece of work. This guy is one of the top leaders in our state senate--which has starved our schools of funding. The hypocrisy is maddening.
11
A lot of talk about stuff that isn't in the Mayor's purview, like schools and (most) transit. The only interesting part, really, is the part about police reform -- and his SPOG endorsement hurts, not helps, there, since it is SPOG that needs to have its tiny little steroidal testicles crushed. But McGinn is pretty terrible on police reform too. Meh. It doesn't really matter; unless he appears on the news eating a small child's brains with a spoon, he's going to win.

And nothing particularly interesting will happen.
12
I guess the "vibrant" BS is a bow to the nightlife people who endorsed him. The rest was just blahblahblah, most of it borrowed from McGinn's talking points, bolstered by lies about all the great stuff he did in Olympia. And if living your life as a gay person is what qualifies you to run for Mayor, there are thousands of people just as qualified as Murray.
13
How can his vision be 20/20 when he doesn't even mention cannabis?? He has blinders obviously...
14
Any one but Mayor McCheese.
15
@14 is that a fat joke? Are you trying to be clever?
16
I'm finding the whole mopey/tongue in cheek McGinn booster thing even more annoying than the rah-rah McGinn booster thing.

Pull it together already and stop acting like a bunch of f*cking children.
17
I'll vote for the candidate that has a plan for bringing thousands of affordable one and two bedroom apartments into Seattle. You know, homes for those who don't make close to 6 figures a year at Amazon.

Needless to say, I won't be voting this year
18
Is he running for Sinn Fein? He sounds like Gerry Adams! Lol
19
Christ on a crutch, he could announce and alliance with Satan and the Taliban and I'd vote for him. Anything to get rid of McSchwinn. Murray throws a bone to fixing the streets and cleaning up the chaos downtown, but I don't expect much. As far as transit and bicycles go, I do hope he realizes that he doesn't owe the bicyclists a single fucking thing given their endorsement of McSchwinn. And his stated commitment not to be divisive helps. Maybe city hall won't be quite so much in the pocket of the bikesters and the developers, but I won't hold my breath.

In any case, Stranger, your fat boy with the beard? Stick a fork in that sausage, he's done. And good fuckin' luck Kashwili Kashooma, your great commie hope. She's going to get whacked even worse than McSchwinn.
20
@17, the only thing that could possibly bring thousands of affordable apartments to Seattle is total economic collapse. If Boeing, Microsoft, Amazon, Starbucks, Nordstrom, Zymogenetics, Expeditors, Safeco, Holland America, Alaska Airlines, REI, Weyerhauser, and T-Mobile, the port, and the University of Washington all relocate or go out of business, there will be some really good deals. Check out rents in Detroit.

Otherwise, no. Not going to happen.
21
Well, that was a lot of words.

No, here is what would do it... Lobdell for King County Exec.

http://www.alanlobdell.org/

Reason? Because unlike everyone else he understands the laws of physics. He is against GMA. Without adding more buildable land -- and we have plenty of it -- we cannot accommodate everyone with good homes at reasonable prices.

And if we don't get away from the greedy leaders who want to cram each and every new "public" resource into 2 square miles of downtown, and then steal all the Federal transit money to build 20 miles of rail in two decades, only to serve themselves and no where else in the region then we'll never have a sane and affordable Washington State (including Seattle).

Alan Lobdell

100% for labelling of GMO foods!

Since I lost my wife to breast cancer in 2003 I have been 100% for labeling GMO foods! GMO is brought to us by Dow chemical, DuPont, Monsanto and others who are the same companies who brought us wonderful things like Thalidomide, Chemo (poison) and DDT and told us they were great.

Remember the newsreels, better living and food through DDT. If GMO is so great then why are they so afraid of us knowing what they are doing to our food? The so called millions in extra costs will only happen if they are allowed to raise prices. There is NO real cost that would drive a large increase. Similar to inflated gas prices!

What horseshit from Lobdell. I lost my grandmother to ovarian cancer.... obviously it was due to her eating some GMO fed steaks.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thalidomide
Thalidomide was developed by German pharmaceutical company Grünenthal GmbH, who obtained a patent for it in 1954
25
Lots of Seattle cops in attendance at
the Murray campaign event, including Guild President Richard O' Neill and his top Lieutenant, dreamy bearded Ron Smith... Apparently unknown to anyone, despite their reputation... the police guild has no problem with gays... what a surprise... Ed will make a fine Mayor and can work well with Portland's gay mayor Samuel Adams
26
You know that The Stranger has really lost it when it starts attracting posts like #22 and #23.
27
Like abortion, Dom - don't want one - don't have one. And it's always okay to switch, i.e. editorially. Do not worry about besmirching your escutcheon.
28
The Stranger won't switch horses mid-stream. But it will be fun to see who they endorse when Murray is up for re-election. Who knows, maybe Sawant will be running for mayor....
29
I love Seattle. I am from Seattle. Sops to labor, progressives, and techies. Did I mention Seattle is neat? Really top notch, if you are hearing this speech you should feel good about yourselves. I'm not divisive like my opponent, I want to bring people together. I'll do things with transit and education and safety that the other guy doesn't, cuz he's all about War on Cars and being dumb and letting my friend Rich ONeill kill natives for no reason. I'll make hi m stop that real soon. I like kids. I'm gay. Did I mention that I presided over a dysfunctional state legislative body that failed you in nearly every way (before I lost it through incompetence and dashed all your Seattle dreams, sssshhh). I'm not the other guy. I like Seattle. Seattle is neat. I'm about togetherness, he's divisive. Thank you.

30
Geez, you all actually read that?
31
#29, good enough for me. Fuck McSchwinn. Send that asshole back to Brooklyn.
32
"And TOGETHER me and my entourage of city power brokers and special interest check writers can bring peace to our city and rule the short-term memory voters who live here-- MWAHAHAHAAHA" Ed Murray is a fucking joke. WTF? How can he even take himself seriously with all of this poll-tested "togetherness" bullshit? What, he'll bring the city together like he brought the Senate together? Has he been drinking the whole time he's been in the legislature because he seems to have blacked out on all of his failures. Education? Hey Ed wake up, the Supreme Court had to intervene to get the state to cough up cash for our schools and you cut funding for higher ed year after year putting the onus on students. Keeping our city safe? Hey Ed wake up, you made huge cuts to mental health, DSHS, the Dept. of Corrections. Nice to see you feel you can take McGinn's balanced budget and do all these great things for Seattle. You fucked up the state budget so now you want to move on to a new bank account and start spending Seattle taxpayer dollars? Hey Ed, your vision sucks.
33
"Christ, what an asshole."
34
How is Murray's campaign more negative than McGinn's? That's a ridiculous assertion. They're in a campaign and are suppose to discredit each other. Neither one has been stumping with nice things to say about the other and the McGinn campaign's suggestion of racism is a really far fetched low blow. Seems like dirty campaigning.
Not calling McGinn out on this is a double standard.
35
Don't trust many if any of these programs will or even can become real.
36
Nairy a word about climate change, global warming, ocean acidification or any of the other catastrophic events that will become increasingly apparent in the next few years.

Senator Murray's failure to even mention the greatest challenge facing this city, our country and the world that of climate change is reason enough to not vote for him. I will vote for Mayor McGinn who has been out spoken and active in his role as Mayor in preparing our City for the challenges brought about by our use of fossil fuels. That makes Mike McGinn by far the better candidate in my opinion.
37
McGinn's campaign DID NOT suggest racism. Just because Murray did not want to pass an affirmative action bill does not mean he is racist,. At the time, it is said that he opposed it because he felt women and minoriities had already reached parity and it wasn't needed. That is not racist, but it does suggest he was out of touch with the real world and/or had sided with business interests rather than the interests of these people.
38
#36, and what's the mayor of Seattle going to do aboiut climate change? Ah, yeah, I get it. Ban cars, right? Goof luck with that one, bikester. We're going to throw that McSchwinn out of here because he spent too much time kissing your spandex and not enough time maintaining the streets.
39
If he is such a rabid Irish Catholic, how come he got married in Saint Mark's Anglican Church, also known as the Protestant Church of England? Did his own Church refused to marry him? Common sense should tell Murray that we have rising apartment rents BECAUSE we have a booming Seattle economy, evidenced by strong home and car sales, record construction of new apartments, busy restaurants, bars and theaters. His inane comments show his lack of understanding of the basis of the Seattle economy. I will certainly not be voting for MURRAY as MAYOR!

Please wait...
