1
That video sums up our modern media very nicely.
2
Oh come on. This is a ridiculous thing to attack someone for. People on TV for a living spend a lot of time on their appearance; this is not news.
3
Yeah so she's in front of a television camera, Goldy. This is a performance. The whole convention was a performance. Joe Biden wore makeup that night. What would you have her do instead?

Megyn Kelly is smart and is in many ways a conservative feminist (Laura Ingraham could be included in this conversation) - which is possible even though it is complicated by a host of glaring blindspots. So, not to stick up for her racist views or her network, but this video says nothing, really, about her, but more about how women are expected to behave.
4
Wow. This video looks far, far worse for Goldy than it does for her. Good to know his insufferability extends far beyond his writing.
6
While I'm not a female, I tend to believe that conservative feminist is an oxymoron to a large extent: i.e., how can a woman oppose a woman's right to make her own reproductive decisions and call herself a feminist? and handing the decision over to mostly old white males.

Economic issues maybe, but one that draws the line on personal freedom and choice can't be considered a feminist in my mind.

And Megyn spouts that reactionary crap because Roger Ailes writes her big checks to do it.
7
Give some examples of her being intelligent or a conservative feminist. That was race baiting. It's horrible to suggest people other than whites get to participate in this culture. She assumed the answer to act like it is outrageous for anyone to ask for participation.

She's playing to the average fox News viewer who is over 65 and white, but that doesn't excuse it at all. Just helping Murdoch keep Americans stupider and not focused on real issues. If there's any doubt, go read the piece in yesterday's Wall Street Journal on SeaTac's $15 minimum wage. The sky is apparently falling across the country.
8
if goldy had turned on his camera 20 minutes earlier, he'd have caught megyn putting on her white makeup base.
9
She's a racist, ergo she's not smart.

And @8: if goldy had turned his camera on 20 minutes later, he'd have caught her putting on her white hood.
10
Have to agree that attacking her for putting on makeup is ridiculous - ad-hominem and unsubstantive in any way.

That said: "conservative feminist" == oxymoron for sure, @7 is right.

Also: I don't know if she's smart or not - seems to be pretty sharp/quick on her feet. If she is all that smart then she is most definitely a horribly cynical person and intellectually dishonest in the extreme. By cynical I mean: she's happy to be intellectually dishonest in order to earn a huge wad of cash pumping propaganda for Roger Ailes. If she is all that smart, then she certainly demonstrates the utmost contempt for her audience - she must think of them as P.T. Barnum's rubes.
11
Nothing can compare to the pill-poppin' lush over at ABC - Diane Sawyer's infamous prep.
12
I thought he was mocking her for not paying attention to the speech she was about to criticize.
13
@11 I gave up on ABC News more or less altogether when Diane Sawyer got down on all fours to interview Elian Gonzalez. Ugh..
14
In comparison, what do you think Rachel Maddow would be doing in the same scenario? I'm guessing more intellectual items, although others might be dabbing at her face & hair. I think their priorities are different, which doesn't make Megyn Kelly stupid. Saying Santa & Jesus are white makes her stupid.
16
Gonna have to agree here. She's about to appear on TV, paying attention to her appearance isn't stupid, it's what you DO. Also the voiceover is disgusting.
17
Agreeing with the majority of commenters. This is a very clumsy and wrong-headed way to disparage Kelly, and frankly, makes you seem kind of clueless.
18
Jesus, what a sexist piece of shit post. Fuck you, Goldy. For shame.
19
Well, she has us talking about her, so there's that. In fact, I've never seen her anywhere but here.
20
My use of the term smart: "having or showing a quick-witted intelligence."

Feminism, at it's foundational level, is the belief in gender equality. Even the most right-wing women can still believe that they are 1) just as smart as men; 2) able to perform any function or job as well as men; 3) likely possess an intimate knowledge of or experience with male chauvinism in the work world.

21
The big take-away from this post is that Goldy wouldn't check to see if he had egg on his face before going on camera.
22
They have known Santa is black since the 70's:

24
This post is sexist.
25
Never mind the make-up stuff, what is scary about this is how angry she looks the whole time. She looks like someone who's about to explode.
26
What we can infer is that Goldy is surprised that the people on TV tend to have make-up and try to look prettier than the average person on the street.

Also, how much prep work would one really need to do to cover Biden's acceptance speech that you probably have an advance copy of ? It's all shiny PR veneer.
27
@18 - Come on. She is looking the part to spew propaganda disguised as news to a national audience and getting paid handsomely for it. The criticism is fair as it would for a male doing the same garbage.
28
Just chiming in to agree with everyone else: she's a pig, but this isn't it. The mocking commentary doesn't help. And I agree with @3 -- Joe Biden's makeup session was undoubtedly longer than hers, and he had more people helping him. Ask your boss how long it takes to get his makeup on before his TV appearances.
29
Watch Megyn Kelly Eviscerate Erick "Women
Should Stay in the Kitchen" Erickson on Fox News
posted by Paul Constant is an example of how you might disagree with someone about a lot of things, you don't have to demonize them.

And you certainly don't need to sexually harass them with creepy as dudebro videos. You know if some high school football jock posted a video like this on Facebook of a girl putting on makeup and snorting crudely about her, the internet would be aflame with outrage.
30
"Oh look, a dumb woman putting on makeup and fixing her hair! Bimbo!"

Seriously Goldy, this is borderline misogyny.
31
Ok, this was a cute experiment. Thanks for the post, thanks to all who commented. Now Goldie, time to get back to your usual tirades, saving the citizenry of Seattle from their evil political oppressors. It's a bird, it's a plane, it's super guy who gets paid to write.
32
It's unprofessional Goldy, to use the Stranger as your personal soap box.
33
@14 Rachel is pretty butch, and doesn't wear makeup normally. I'm under the impression that her producer has to scream at her to hold still while someone on staff does her face and hair, and even then, it better be minimal or she'd wipe it off.
34
Is this thread an example of what we called smarm the other day? That whatever Goldy's doing is essentially rude?

Kelly's got a track record of being such a fucked up conservative piece of shit that I'm inclined to let anything directed at her be her problem. I don't think this violates the Martin Niemöller principles ("First they came for the conservative assholes, but I wasn't a conservative asshole. . .").

It reminds me of that time when S. E. Cupp was called the c-word or something like that and Sandra Fluke, the Georgetown student targeted by Rush Limbaugh and all the other rightwingers because she was outspoken about wanting birth control coverage to be required in health insurance plans, criticized the sexism against Cupp. Cupp's reaction was to totally dismiss Fluke's defense. I think Cupp bragged about having a good sense of humor, unlike Fluke. And my own thoughts even before Cupp's remarks was that Fluke didn't need to step in for Cupp; if Fluke was asked about it, all she had to do was say something general about how no woman should have to be mocked the way Cupp was rather than make her comments specific to Cupp. Cupp and Kelly and all their ilk are horrible people who make their own beds; we don't have to be misogynistic toward them, but we don't need to go out of our ways to defend their honor when someone else targets them like that, either.

35
@27

Criticism for what? It's not criticism. It's sexual harassment.
36
@34: Except Godly apparently didn't even know who she was at the time, if you listened to it. So he was just doing this to some random woman about to go on TV because he's a sexist prick. (And a normal prick. I don't want to limit him.)
37
Goldy, I like you and I HATE her but this whole post and lord knows your commentary is the kind of misogynist bullshit I would expect from the other side. Yea she's putting on makeup while watching the speech because society (especially team red) still demands that a woman, ANY woman, who dares to appear in public meet the narrow beauty standard before she is worthy of a job, respect, or a chance to heard. So she either plays along or is out of job. But of course if she tries to meet the standard YOU give her shit because lipstick and hair= incapable of intelligence. This bullshit should be beneath you. If you need coaching on how to talk about women without talking about their looks (including mocking them for enhancing them) I hear the republican party is giving classes. Maybe you should enroll.
38
@35 - I understood it (I watched without sound) as a view on the deception required to be a vacuous, "pretty" talking head who get to 'catapult the propaganda' for a lot of money.
39
@38: Watch it with sound, then come back and comment.
41
Bad, bad Goldy.

Choosing up sides clearly doesn't make you the Authority on Everything Right and Good.
42
Chiming in to agree that Goldy's commentary is really, really creepy.
43
Defending Megyn Kelly is making me queasy. Thanks Goldy.
44
Really, I think this one deserves an apology, Goldy.
45
Disciplined, venal, and ambitious is not the same thing as smart.
46
She can't be thinking about her job while she's doing her hair? Protip: most women's brains actually continue to function just fine, even when we are grooming. All I see in this video is a professional performer focusing and getting her game face on.

@14 What? You're guessing Rachel Maddow would be doing "more intellectual items" in a similar situation? How exactly do you know what kinds of intellectual items Megyn Kelly is doing with her brain in this video? Again, doing hair and thinking: not mutually exclusive.

@33 I think you're wrong about that. Rachel Maddow consistently has some of the best makeup on television (evidenced by the fact that you can't see it). Whatever her personal makeup preferences may be, I guarantee you she spends a decent amount of time in the makeup chair, and I would also guess that she uses that time to, y'know, think about her job.

This post is not just "borderline" misogynistic, it's straight up sexist (and creepy).
47
@20: "Even the most right-wing women can still believe that they are 1) just as smart as men; 2) able to perform any function or job as well as men"

Citation needed.
48
Let me specify, how does she specify this on-air? Because otherwise you're guessing that her "true feelings" run counter to her on-air act.
49
So this got successfully converted from:

Megyn Kelly, a so-called "journalist," has her back to one of the main events she's been sent to "cover" - the nomination of the vice president of the United States - because she will be fed everything she's going to say though her head set anyway and her presence there is perfunctory as she is a venal little prop for the right wing.

To:

"OMG! GOLDY HATES WOMEN!"

HAH! Mission accomplished.
The far left is such fucking joke.
50
Specify specify specify (sigh.)
51
@49 She has her back turned on people dancing and waving to Sister Sledge, actually. She can probably picture that pretty accurately in her head.
52
MEGYN KELLY IS RIGHT! SANTA IS WHITE BECAUSE HE IS BASED ON SINTER KLAAS, A DUTCH FOLKTALE! I don't care if people want a a black or Asian or Latino or Sephardic Santa. That is GREAT! It's inclusive and appropriate in our modern world. Does anyone care what color the old drunk guy in the Santa Claus suit is!?! But you cannot change the origin of a folktale. It is DUTCH. It isn't African, Mexican, Chinese, or Russian. It is a DUTCH folktale. RESPECT THAT! It is a fact cannot be altered. If you race baiters refuse to deal with the truth, then go complain to the Dutch. Dont whine like liberal babies about Megyn Kelly.
53
Christ, Goldy, what the hell? Why did you video a woman you didn't know while she was preparing to do her job? And you kept it for five years.

Don't be a creepy dude.
54
@52: "Does anyone care what color the old drunk guy in the Santa Claus suit is!?"

Persons of color, I imagine.

"But you cannot change the origin of a folktale"

Pepsi was able to do so, successfully. You seem pretty ignorant of history.
55
*Cough*, I mean Coca Cola.
56
Christ, what an asshole. And in this case I mean Goldy, not Megyn.
57
First, Megyn is doing the same thing as any other anchor; the difference is that she's female and works for Fox News. But while Goldy might ostensibly dislike her because of her work for Fox, his voice-over is far more misogynist than ideological.

That said, an additional side note: listening to a speech spoken aloud is nice, but far less necessary if you've already read an advance copy of that same speech. Did Megyn, like many media commentators, receive an advance copy? I don't know, but I assume so. So why shouldn't she spend this time to prepare herself for the camera? And it's not even like Joe Biden was talking at that moment; it sounds like nothing important was happening onstage.

So Goldy's critique of her journalistic professionalism falls short. He could make an ideological case but he doesn't do so - in the post or in the voice-over. So we're left with misogyny.
58
@57, in Goldy's defense, the video is clearly tagged horsesass and identifies the submitter accurately.
59
i resent being put in a position where i have to defend megyn kelly, but count me among those who think that this post is sexist bullshit.
60
I guess because you declare yourself a liberal, and label Megyn Kelly a conservative and therefore the enemy, that somehow this isn't an ugly, bitter misogynist rant.
61
I'll echo the sentiment of others pointing out that this is an incredibly stupid post. Megyn Kelly does enough damage to her own credibility with her words. Liberals mocking her attempts to look presentable for a national broadcast is pathetic crap worthy of the teabaggers.

Stop looking desperate for click bait, Goldy.
62
#60 nails it.

Liberals like Goldy think it is ok for them to say and do certain things because they have liberal "credentials."

This is why Goldy thinks it is ok to use the term "retard" as an insult, and also why felt it was reasonable when he made that post from earlier in the year explaining to women why it was fine if their employers were allowed to decide if they were going to cover birth control or not in their insurance plans.

It is good that Goldy's misogyny pops up from time to time so that we do not forget that prejudice does not go away and does not get excused based on where one stands in the political spectrum.
63
@62: "It is good that Goldy's misogyny pops up from time to time so that we do not forget that prejudice does not go away and does not get excused based on where one stands in the political spectrum."

Agreed. There are plenty of reasons to loathe the personality and behaviors of talking heads (of any positioning) that don't involve these sort of surface-level vanities.
64
@61 - "Liberals mocking her attempts to look presentable for a national broadcast is pathetic crap worthy of the teabaggers."

Painting oneself up to fit some commercial version of beauty and peddle snake oil isn't a profession that we have to condone, whatever the gender or the "news" organization. Criticizing or even mocking Kelly's projection of "femininity" is perfectly OK in my book.
65
@64

Don't hate the player, hate the game.

I shudder to think what kind of sniggering we'd hear from Goldy and his bro if Kelly had dared to sit in front of that camera with no makeup. Because she can't win; the only way guys like him leave women alone is if they stay home in the kitchen.
66
@65: As much as this thread is unnecessary, I don't see him posting about women he finds ugly either. There's no need to exaggerate.
67
I finally got around to actually watching this video today, and good lord, Goldy. The voiceover is so terrible/sexist that I feel the need to pile on two days late. Plus, apparently you didn't even know who she was at the time, so you don't have "blinded by hatred" as an excuse. I hope some of the comments people made sink in. This was really pretty vile.
68
The trollfucks got hella stirred up.

Couldn't happen to a better bunch of assholes.
69
WHY do you judge someone by their appearance?
She's attractive and she's on RV. Looking good is part of her work / job.
I doubt that she'd judge all of you who posted negatively about her appearance; which might be a little easier and more accurate than your attacks on her appearance.
You wish that you looked as good as she looks.
You want to judge someone?
Then, judge muslim barry bama.
