We also owe a great deal to the Radical Right, screaming "socialist" this and "socialist" that at everything and anything that doesn't follow their script.

The general public now sees socialist stuff as just being stuff that isn't radical right. "This Radical Right stuff is bullshit. Hey, let's try this Socialism thing instead."

Yeah, de Blasio picking Bill Bratton as NYPD Chief - the architect of stop and frisk - is real progressive.

Cant afford chairs, but how many mac's do you have? Seriously, one mac pays for a dozen really nice chairs with proper back support. OSHA would be proud of your work environment.

Slog really needs a better comment section, a delete button for when you post in the wrong article.

Saw a little bit of CNN yesterday in the break room - they were running a story about how "Middle class Americans can no longer afford Red Lobster". Clearly we are in crisis.

@2 - here's your Internet Progressive merit badge, for your demonstration of pointless ranty discord at any decision with which you disagree (bonus point for being factually incorrect - that would be Ray Kelly)

@4 no, no, it nicely demonstrates the utter tritness and dumbassery of your opinions, when taken out of context. Clearly the staff should be using Windows PCs. Because reasons.

As for the actual article in question - the idea that crisis can only be resolved with conflict is just... so fucking stupid, and demonstrably incorrect on numerous historical occasions, that it actually only COULD be said by a French sociologist speaking at the LSE.

2014 - a year that will be like every other year.

"A crisis must be resolved by conflict."

Unless that means an armed conflict, I don't understand how you fail to see that conflict is in fact happening.

@6, Bratton was the architect and first implementer of stop-and-frisk during his first term as NYPD commissioner. Kelly merely continued (and expanded) the program.

Charles, with all du respect, you are missing a paragraph about the workers taking control of the tax policy machine that currently tilts the economy in favor of those that benefit from the failed supply side economics.
The job secretors are not creating more jobs that pay a living wage because; there isn't enough demand for products and services; there aren't enough people that make a living wage to demand more products and services.
Attempting to artificially inflate a demanding economy from the bottom-up while tax policy remains as it is is a temporary feel good measure.
The $15 dollar an hour minimum wage will be overcome by inflation in time and we will be right back where we started as long as the growth in the economy is structured to benefit supply side economics.

I'm not an economist, just a middle age white guy experiencing stagnant wages, while my union coworkers are voting on their participation in the race to the bottom today.

Thank you Charles. I agree with your position and appreciate the post. I think we are seeing a turn of the times. The right wing is getting louder as they get smaller - we are hearing their death rattle. Sadly, it's not a quick death but rather a long, slow suffering broadcast on Fox News. Mercifully, things are moving, progressing forward. Anyone who doesn't think so should compare today's America in 2014 with the America of 1970, or 1950 or 1900. We are moving forward, slowly, and compared to the bigoted shithole of 1950's America, we live in an enlightened age.

@2
Don't you pay attention?

Total government control, and prohibition of individual rights are what progressives are all about.

I don't think there is a national movement towards the left and strident progressivism (polling indicates the Republicans are set to make modest gains in the coming mid-terms), but rather a radicalizing of the existing American left in response to the ongoing crisis of capitalism and the failure of Obama pragmatism to put a stake in the heart of radical conservatism. I think there's an emerging awareness that the fissures in our society can no longer be papered over with never-ending economic growth, that as fewer and fewer are spared the cruelty of neoliberal capitalism, more and more will agitate for an alternative. You cannot sit on the fence between self-satisified capitalist winner and bleeding-heart liberal when your kids are begging for grocery money because of stusent loans and a lousy job market and your parents' yard is going to seed because grandma can't afford the physical therapy she needs to get out of bed anymore.
