That's nice and all, and I'm all for it, but just exactly how does he have the authority to unilaterally do this? (I don't think he does.)

yes yes, reminds me of Koni 2012 and occupy wall st.
would be nice if a focused movement for a few, fundamental changes to the tax code and election process could gain traction. but that would be too rational.

According to the article, the order only applies to new or renegotiated contracts for federal workers. That seems well within the bounds of Executive authority.

@1

Could be because you're in over your depth here. Laws and such.

@1 - LMGTFY:
"Although there is no constitutional provision nor statute that explicitly permits executive orders, there is a vague grant of "executive power" given in Article II, Section 1, Clause 1 of the Constitution, and furthered by the declaration "take Care that the Laws be faithfully executed" made in Article II, Section 3, Clause 5. Most executive orders use these Constitutional reasonings as the authorization allowing for their issuance to be justified as part of the President's sworn duties, the intent being to help direct officers of the U.S. Executive carry out their delegated duties as well as the normal operations of the federal government: the consequence of failing to comply possibly being the removal from office."

Obama currently has used fewer executive orders than every 20th century President except for Bush the senior (who only served one term) and Ford (who barely served half). Here's hoping that our president can now govern the country because Congress has so thoroughly dedicated itself to doing nothing.

So yes, Scary Kenyan Socialist Blah Nazi President Commandant Obama has every legal, historical, and moral right to issue and govern via executive order. Get the fuck over it.

He can do this, and the next Republican president can roll it back. That's why ultimately we need to legislate a higher minimum wage for all workers, so that a basic living for federal workers isn't subject to the whims of whomever happens to be president.
7
It's ridiculous to me that this wasn't already the law. If you want a federal contract, pay all your workers a decent wage. Don't like it? Go somewhere else for your welfare.

Please wait...
