This is the true mark of success in America: a shout-out from Shortz.
2
By Wednesday, the clues are for pretty obscure stuff. Probably used "sportscaster, Patrick' once too often
3
Wait, is that the regular crossword or the cryptic crossword? Well, lots of cachet in either case, I suppose.

@1
I watched half-hour PBS show on Shorts, forget everything just about, I think he's bald and wears glasses.

38 across - bespeckaled Bald Xword titan
5
Tomorrow Jeopardy.
6
Michael?
7
you'll be happy to know that my (87 year old) mother told me this morning that she saw this. congrats!

I'm curious whether the "Piece of Slate, e.g." one is a reference to the online magazine; they had a clue not long ago where the *answer* was SLATE, and the clue was, "Home of the Political Gabfest and The Gist" or something to that effect.
9
Who knew Dan Savage would one day be inside the Gray Lady?
10
Wait till you're a question on Jeopardy, Danno. Super thrill up the leg!
11
@9 Brilliant.
12
Humble-brag much?

Congrats!
13
Me! Me! Me!
14
No brag, just fact.

Said laconically.
15
How many letters?
16
@14 "That's what I said: James is darn good..."

Sorry, "O.M.G." qualifies as a humble-brag.
17
Your mom would be beaming.

I'm going with "Michael" seeing as how he said that the motivation for female students who come from a private school to feed and provide services to the homeless is so they "can go in and get raped by them, because they seem to like the excitement of it...". An evil sex columnist, sure, but a sex columnist nonetheless.
19
Center square, too.
20
The crowning achievement for Dan will be when the crossword clue is " fecal-lube mix" 8 letters.
21
In the words of Joe Biden: "That's a big fucking deal."

Congratulations!

I am sitting here doing the Sunday Times crossword puzzle, somehow the words won't come....

Please wait...
