One side launches rockets haphazardly at Israeli cities, with no care for collateral damage, but is stopped by the other side. Israeli success in preventing civilian casualties on their side should not be considered a sign of a war crime. That is insane.

Neighborhood Bully
By Bob Dylan

Well, the neighborhood bully, he’s just one man
His enemies say he’s on their land
They got him outnumbered about a million to one
He got no place to escape to, no place to run
He’s the neighborhood bully

The neighborhood bully just lives to survive
He’s criticized and condemned for being alive
He’s not supposed to fight back, he’s supposed to have thick skin
He’s supposed to lay down and die when his door is kicked in
He’s the neighborhood bully

The neighborhood bully been driven out of every land
He’s wandered the earth an exiled man
Seen his family scattered, his people hounded and torn
He’s always on trial for just being born
He’s the neighborhood bully

Well, he knocked out a lynch mob, he was criticized
Old women condemned him, said he should apologize.
Then he destroyed a bomb factory, nobody was glad
The bombs were meant for him. He was supposed to feel bad
He’s the neighborhood bully

Well, the chances are against it and the odds are slim
That he’ll live by the rules that the world makes for him
’Cause there’s a noose at his neck and a gun at his back
And a license to kill him is given out to every maniac
He’s the neighborhood bully

He got no allies to really speak of
What he gets he must pay for, he don’t get it out of love
He buys obsolete weapons and he won’t be denied
But no one sends flesh and blood to fight by his side
He’s the neighborhood bully

Well, he’s surrounded by pacifists who all want peace
They pray for it nightly that the bloodshed must cease
Now, they wouldn’t hurt a fly. To hurt one they would weep
They lay and they wait for this bully to fall asleep
He’s the neighborhood bully

Every empire that’s enslaved him is gone
Egypt and Rome, even the great Babylon
He’s made a garden of paradise in the desert sand
In bed with nobody, under no one’s command
He’s the neighborhood bully

Now his holiest books have been trampled upon
No contract he signed was worth what it was written on
He took the crumbs of the world and he turned it into wealth
Took sickness and disease and he turned it into health
He’s the neighborhood bully

What’s anybody indebted to him for?
Nothin’, they say. He just likes to cause war
Pride and prejudice and superstition indeed
They wait for this bully like a dog waits to feed
He’s the neighborhood bully

What has he done to wear so many scars?
Does he change the course of rivers? Does he pollute the moon and stars?
Neighborhood bully, standing on the hill
Running out the clock, time standing still
Neighborhood bully

There does seem to be an issue with declaring war on a territory currently occupied by yourself.

@1 is correct. What the hell is this notion that both sides should experience the same amount of death? That's just wrong...sick, even.

We can go around and around about who is "right" in the Israel-Palestine conflict, but honestly, instead of insinuating that Boeing is somehow responsible for the disproportionate death ratio in this latest battle, perhaps the protesters should spend more time asking why Hamas continues lobbing missiles at a country (while also denying their right to exist, building tunnels into for terrorists to use, etc) that can clearly kick their ass.
6

Boeing makes 40-50% of the Arrow III anti-missile technology ("Iron Dome") that prevents missiles from reaching population targets.

Doesn't that mean Boeing is saving lives?

If you are going to try to block a road by tying people together, don't wear black shirts and don't lie down. They are just begging for an elderly or distracted driver to take a turn and get crunched. Look at how low and inconspicuous their profile is in the last picture. Didn't these protesters have a least one person who thought "we are pretty much camouflaging ourselves to look like a crosswalk on top of an actual crosswalk--maybe we should lay out some cones".

Israel isn't battling Palestinians, they're battling Hamas who publicly states they want to kill Israelis and deny Israel's right to exist, constantly pummeling Israel with rockets and putting weaponry in civilian homes on purpose so that the death toll will always be high on the Gazan side and cull world sympathy - it's an extremely sick and horrible practice. This is all Hamas' doing. Israel does't randomly shell and kill civilians for no reason.
10
@1, @4 "Proportionality" is not, contrary to your fantasies, about demanding an Israeli head for every Palestinian. It's a rough measure to figure out the justice of killing Palestinians in the first place. Is it "justified" to kill 10 Palestinians to prevent 1 Israeli death? How about 100? Anybody advocating violence in either side of the conflict is just wrong. Nobody's even asking whether measures can be taken to protect Israelis that DON'T involve massive civilian casualties on the other side. It's just taken as a given that any number of Palestinians should be killed by association to Hamas, because Hamas "wants" to destroy Israel. In the modern world, that's not how we approach matters of justice. If my neighbor "wants" to kill me, I can't call in the police to firebomb his house and kill his family. If my neighbor attacks me, I can have him arrested and thrown in jail, but his family is not guilty of his crimes, though they may harbor him. THAT is what proportionality is about. Let the punishment fit the crime.
11
Yeah. Take THAT, Israel!

(Uh. Kids. This protest might be more effective in Tel Aviv.)
12
Queation: Do you use missles to protect your population or do you use your population to protect your missles?
13
@1 Willful misinterpretation, much? How about a restatement: It is not proportional to kill thousands in revenge for the criminal death of a few. Although of a dramatically different magnitude, this is the same sort of idea as when someone "mouths of" to a cop, and then end up dead, shot 12 times.
14
@11 Yeah, save the world using troll-y internet comments. That's the *right* way.

Way to stick it to the workers who have absolutely nothing to do with this.

That'll show 'em.

Not to nitpick people standing against bloody and insane conflicts, but... the impact of the direct action should be carefully targeted. I hope those affected by this one are less the rank & file workers at Boeing than the executives who obtain the contracts... as it is the execs who drive the bus, and not so much the workers.

You want the workers to be sympathetic to the cause, positively impacted themselves, and hopefully even motivated enough to engage in workplace actions of their own, which may have greater knock-on effects than a day spent blocking traffic.

Since 2000 (when human rights organizations like B'Tselem בצלם began collecting data), Israeli forces have killed nearly 6,900 Palestinians, including 1,523 Palestinian children, and injured nearly 60,000. Over 8,000 Palestinian children have been abducted and detained without access to basic legal rights.
There is not a single Palestinian family that hasn't been affected by Israel's occupation.
The Israeli military occupation began 22 years before the first suicide bombing occurred, and 34 years before Hamas fired a single rocket into Israel, yet Palestinians are constantly being blamed as the aggressors in U.S. media.
It seems that no matter how many lives Israel takes, no matter how many children it kidnaps, no matter how many houses it destroys, and no matter how much land it steals, if Palestinians respond in any way, shape or form, they are portrayed as terrorists and Israel is the victim.
Americans need to know the facts. We give Israel over $3 billion dollars per year in military aid to a population of less than 7 million Jewish Israelis, and most Americans would be appalled if they knew what their tax dollars were paying for.

A row of protesters dressed all in black have been lying in the road to prevent access to the Boeing parking lot since around 8 a.m., Slog tipper Mike Smith, who works in the area, wrote to tell us this morning.

Boeing pays pretty well - a "living wage" I would think. Thus these protesters are impeding these employee's right to a living wage.

how's this working out for you?

@9 Israel does't randomly shell and kill civilians for no reason.

Well, as long as Israel has a reason to be killing so many civilians...

Please wait...
