sissoucat, lots of stuff about France is great, and progressive I'm sure. But I do think your depiction of France v. US (and it didn't help that you started out talking about "Europe" when it seems you really only mean France) is a little heavy-handed at best.

Having non-white guests in one's home without the neighbors complaining? Um, yes, in this century that is pretty standard. Shit, those of us who live in cities have plenty of non-white neighbors. Overt racism is heavily frowned upon - look at Donald Sterling. Less overt racism is still endemic and a huge problem, to a point where I think there are plenty of people who honestly think they aren't racist when they argue that George Zimmerman is not guilty of murder. Racism has also gotten bundled into a lot of malice towards the poor. This is a major problem, but we're not living in the 1950s.

The Tea Party is part of the Republican Party, sure, but it's still a fringe party. And it's seriously damaging Republicans' national prospects. They keep getting assholes into Congress, but how are the Republicans' presidential prospects these days?

Finally, you don't do your argument any good when you advocate people being prosecuted for saying horrible racist things. There are consequences for that sort of behavior here - again, look at Donald Sterling - but they do not include punishment under the law, and a lot of people do think that's a very good thing.
