Enjoy your retirement Mark - I'm sure the Cayman Islands will welcome you back with open arms!

Again I'm reminded of the old parable about the foolish man who built his house on a foundation of sand. In this case, Driscoll built this institution on a foundation of his own greed and avarice. I don't think it should be saved; blow the whole thing up, sell the land, let those truly seeking spirituality find another way, and let the unthinking sheep find their next con.
3
Party time!
4
This frees up Driscoll to open up a Bible-based Ford dealership in Lake City.

"For if the demon leaves, it goes into the desert for a while, seeking rest but finding none. Then it says, ‘I will return to the man I came from.’ So it returns and finds the man’s heart clean but empty! Then the demon finds seven other spirits more evil than itself, and all enter the man and live in him. And so he is worse off than before.” Matthew 12:45

To those still attending Mars Hill: If you're despondent and depressed, try atheism! Life is so much better without a judgmental god and his charlatan priests.
7
Who says the Slog doesn't report GREAT news?! fantastic.
8
Does this mean Mars Hill no longer preaches that homosexuality is a sin that should be punished, or that women have a separate, subservient role to men?

Because if not, they can definitely still fuck right off.
9
Ok, so elders finally agree he's enough of a dick to ask to leave. That's pretty fun and all, but what about the money? Aid to Africa that never went, tithes spent on PR firms and personal vanity projects, ambitious real estate acquisitions, etc. Driscoll didn't do that alone.

Good to see such a misguided man out of a leadership role, but I hope the CEO's of this enterprise don't think they've washed their hands of everything that's happened in the last 10 years.
10
The elders didn't even ask him to resign, and does say that mark committed no acts of immorality.
11
Bizarre. The only thing he did was to be himself (which was being an asshole). Tens of thousands of people followed him, knowing full well he was a complete asshole, and now he resigns because his deputies confirmed that, in fact, he was an asshole? It's like asking asking the Pope to resign because he refuses to employ women as priests (well, hopefully that will happen soon).
12
Seattle will be a much better place without that bigot-filled cult spreading like weeds around our area. May it fall, may it burn and may it never return.
13
Eat shit and die, Mark, baby. Eat shit and die.
14
maybe they'll unlock the shed and let his wives out now...
15
"Pastor Mark has never been charged with any immorality, illegality or heresy. Most of the charges involved attitudes and behaviors reflected by a domineering style of leadership."

Pretty sure blatant plagiarism is both illegal and immoral.
16
maybe now someone will unlock the shed and let his wives out....
17
@9:

But, convincing the faithful it was all Driscoll's fault means the elders can continue to sheer the flock.

@10:

According to the "New New Covenant" enriching ones' self at the expense of others isn't considered "immoral", because, apparently it's what Jeebuz wants you to do.
18
The non-PR-vetted list from MHC:
1. You’re a dick.
2. You’re a dick.
3. Some of us think you’re more of an asshole than a dick.
4. You’ve been a dick and/or an asshole for a long time
5. Apparently god likes dicks/assholes, but we sure hope your kids don’t turn out like you
19
You don't think that will change what is taught at Mars Hill Church do you? The members aren't what I'd call even reasonable Republicans: they are all batshit crazy conservatives. They went because they LIKED this assholes message.

That bit of reality being pumped out there: hopefully this will be the nail in the coffin of this cult but fear not. Another one will rise up and be worse than what Driscoll could ever be. There is an endless supply of these snake oil salesman.
20
Elmer Gantry will just move his revival tent somewhere else. Like P.T. Barnum said, there's a Christian born every minute.
21
So true, @19. These people don't seem to be able to function independent of a strong, charismatic authority figure telling them how to conduct every aspect of their lives. Are they just too lazy to make their own informed decisions? Or is there literally some neurological process going on in their heads that makes them incapable of doing so? I've often wondered.
22
@21I believe their brains are incapable of independent, critical thinking because it's a very efficient brainwashing. It really robs you of reality. Take it from me. I was brainwashed as a child and it took years of work to see the truth about religion.
23
This should really open up the cult market here.
24
I'd be very interested to know what's going to happen with the Trust and whether he'll still have control/access/ownership of it. It seems unlikely that he's leaving without all his cash and prizes.
25
Mark, I want to share this with you: "Therefore, my brothers, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm thus in the Lord, my beloved." - Philippians 4:1
26
I'm so angry that they don't think misdirecting funds for aid in the 3rd world is immoral. SMASH, SMASH, SMASH!
27
He'll be back. I give him 2 years max before he's up to something again.
28
What @8 said. Fundies are still fundies even when they aren't openly assholes.
29
Carneys is as carneys does. Ought to be a real nice crop of rubes floating around right about now ready to be conned again real good. Gotta think what that is so I can get in on that action and get some goddam cash!
30
@29 Yep CARNEY.
31
Pig roast, and send his charbecued head to the Koch brothers' Evil Empire, where Wall Street banisters eat their own.
32
@31: Dammit! Stupid spellcheck! Banksters is what I meant, not "banisters"!!

Folklife 2011 perhaps, strolling early toward the Space Needle entry, amid festive groups and musicians, a half-circle crowd stood more transfixed than relaxed by spoken word promising torture in the afterlife. My view was toward the vibrant pleasantry and didn't notice the trio of preachers until after I made my way across the circular space between them and the crowd. Turning to view southward, the hoisted signs blaring burning fire stopped me as the question, "Where do you think you're going when you die?" with a vicious sneer was asked whoever might hear. Stunned, I swung an arm to encompass first the crowd, then the preachers and claimed, "No GOD is going to condemn anyone, no matter their sin, or their very crime, to an eternity of torture!" That got everyone's attention. I added, "These people have the bible backwards" my armwave pointing at the preachers. Barely a moment passed before one preacher tried to answer with some quote out of Leviticus. "Bah!" I fended the memorized officious counter-argument before it got started, turned my back and walked off, a little less joyful, but joyful enough to leave the experience behind while the music played all day that day, the next day and the next.

From The Stranger (Seattle) website:

...There had been rumblings of a resignation for several days but nothing that could be confirmed. The church has a plan in place in the event of a Driscoll resignation. The situation is so fluid that it will be interesting to see if they follow it.

According to those familiar with Driscoll’s employment agreement, this “written notice of my voluntary termination of employment” is important because it triggers a very generous termination package of one year of base salary and benefits.

What a garbage statement. Saying that Driscoll had already addressed certain allegations and so they don't need to be considered? Church money to boost his book sales, aid money that only aided Driscoll. Clearly, Driscoll wasn't the only problem with this church and 'flock'. They didn't ask him to resign?! Mars Hill needs to go. Not just Driscoll, but the entire operation. It's tainted and full of apologists who obviously don't want to admit just how foolish they've been in following this guy. Evangelical Protestants are usually the worst (I grew up as one). No one wants to be sucked into your fairy tale cult you creeps, so leave us alone!
36
Being accused of arrogance and preaching hatred because god called for you to seems redundant. Just sayin' .....
37
I'm not sorry about this. And, I disagree with their claim that some of his issues were not immoral.

Please wait...
