Rebecca, I agree with much of what you have to say, but you've made a big error that is pertinent to the points you're trying to make. Zerlina's aria "Batti batti" is sung to her husband Masetto, NOT to Don Giovanni. This casts their relationship in a very different light--what sort of marriage is it if she knows this is the way to win him back? It also casts her seduction by Don Giovanni in a different light--is she being taken advantage of by him, or perhaps seeing an opportunity for a better situation?





I think this moment, and many others in the opera serve to make all the characters more complex and the opera more interesting--if Don Giovanni is the villain, why do the "good" guys so often behave in ways that leave a bad taste in the mouth? And if the others are the heroes, why does Don Giovanni get the heroic music when he won't back down in the face of death? I love this opera because of the ambiguities in each character--you can't make cut-and-dry statements about anyone, and it challenges your assumptions at every turn. Hopefully it makes the viewer a bit uncomfortable. This gives it a wealth of possible interpretations, so that every different performance is exciting.

I enjoyed the performance but I found the sets to be too minimalist and drab. The costumes were nice counter to this, especially the bright pink for Don Giovanni. Lawrence Brownlee's voice is quite nice, but I felt he had issues projecting it. There were numerous times at last night's performance where I had trouble hearing him over the other singers and/or the orchestra. But overall I found it a solid performance by all and well worth my time.
