Hey Dan, I just did a Google search for ChurchSnaps.

#1 result: ChurchSnaps app
#2 result: Survivor Network of Those Abused by Priests (SNAP)

Perhaps the app creators should consider this a sign from God?

The Virginia Case sounds really harsh sentence for contacting an allege 12 year old and sending the cop a naked photo. Unless the perp has priors, that is a really harsh sentence for the crime. He should be convicted of a felony, but 20 years?!?!?

Looks like our favorite anonymous troll has had a spasm attack on this one! To address just the attempt to portray a larger percentage of same sex perpetrators:

Obviously this is a tiny sample size that cannot be extrapolated, but even a careful examination of available data would not take into account unreported and/or unprosecuted sex crimes against minors. There is a huge "squeeee" factor when people in power see a same sex crime, and I strongly suspect that a man accused of abusing a young boy will get much more attention than a man abusing a young girl, plus a girl can more easily be victimized as a "flirt" and "mature for her age".

Finally, it seems that the vast majority of reported teacher-student contact is opposite sex; is your position that homosexuals abusers are more likely to hide in religious institutions than school districts? Your arguments lack logic.

"it seems that the vast majority of reported teacher-student contact is opposite sex"...

That is a Dingleberry you just plucked from your ass.

Actual facts would be better.

And will show a significant amount of same sex teacher abuse, including female teacher/ female teen student.

However, you do stumble on a profound truth; "Obviously this is a tiny sample size that cannot be extrapolated, ...." by which, you mean, no doubt, that NOTHING factual about youth pastors can be deduced from these sad stories Danny endlessly trolls the internet for.......

2-5

OUCH!

someone fetch Danny's Preparation H

The Truth has just ruptured his ass.

again............
11
@8 - And yet you drop a dingleberry of your own there at the end. Please, link me to the "actual facts" so I can see and critique the data! I am not willing to expend the effort - you are the one who seems fixated on this, not me.

BTW - I am Christian, attend church each week, sing in the choir, and sit on the church council, and it pains me to see such atrocities, regardless of the sexual orientation of the perpetrators.

11

did you read the CBS story Danny snatched above?
14
Worth noting, AGAIN, that the North Carolina 'youth pastor' became a 'former youth pastor' the moment the law started sniffing around him.
15
@9 - Even one such story is a tragedy and shows the hypocrisy of a so-called "religious" man of power abusing a position of trust. I have no problem with Dan shining a light on this. He is not saying every youth pastor, or even a majority of youth pastors, will abuse a child - he is saying to be careful when you make blanket statements about anyone, and to be diligent when you allow your children to come in contact with adults - even in church!

from the LA Times:

L.A. Unified says girl, 14, could consent to sex with teacher

"BY TERESA WATANABE

November 13, 2014, 11:10 p.m.

L.A. Unified officials are coming under fire for allowing their attorneys to argue that a 14-year-old student was mature enough to consent to sex with her middle school math teacher.

The arguments were made in a civil case that was filed last year by the student, who was seeking financial compensation from the district. She said she suffered emotional trauma from a five-month sexual relationship nearly four years ago with her teacher at Edison Middle School in Los Angeles.

District officials, defending their legal strategy Thursday, said they needed to rebut the student's claim with evidence that she was a willing participant who had a prior history of sexual activity.

"While we are sympathetic of the pain that this type of inappropriate relationship could cause this young woman and her family, the case focused on whether the school district could have done anything to prevent it," L.A. Unified's attorney, W. Keith Wyatt, said in a statement. "Trying this case in a respectful manner, but one that allowed the jury to consider the full weight of the facts and evidence, was critical."

But the actions in the case, first reported by KPCC, were blasted by legal experts.

"The belief that middle school children can consent to sexual activity is something one would expect to hear from pedophile advocates, not the second-largest school district in the U.S.," said John Manly, one of the attorneys representing plaintiffs in the Miramonte Elementary child abuse case. That case, involving allegations that the district failed to supervise a teacher who allegedly fed semen-laced cookies to children, is set for trial this month.

David M. Ring, an attorney who has specialized in sex abuse cases for 25 years, said he had never heard of anyone presenting the sexual history of a minor in court and called the action despicable. He also said that middle school students are incapable of consenting to sex with adults, especially with teachers and others who can exploit their positions of authority to manipulate them into such acts.

A jury last fall found L.A. Unified was not liable for damages in the case. District officials argued that school staff did not know of the abuse and that the eighth-grade teacher and student took pains to conceal their relationship until it was reported to a science teacher by the victim's friend. When notified, officials said, the district immediately removed the teacher, Elkis Hermida, from the classroom; he was subsequently convicted on criminal charges of lewd acts against a child and sentenced to three years in prison in 2011.

Holly Boyer, a Pasadena attorney who is appealing the case on behalf of the student, said witnesses testified that Hermida hugged students and that one teacher saw him lying on classroom desks texting with pupils present but acknowledged that she did not report any inappropriate sexual activity.

Boyer said the appeal will challenge the decision by Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Lawrence Cho to allow the district to present evidence of the girl's prior sexual history, among other grounds.

Laurie Levenson, a Loyola Law School professor, said that it was a risky tactic to present evidence of a minor's sexual history and that many judges would have limited its use or barred it. She also said that only a few California cases have indicated that minors might possibly be able to consent to sex with an adult and that the issue needed to be more clearly litigated.

She added, however, that the student in this case appeared to have "opened the door" to such evidence by seeking damages against the district for the teacher's actions.

Manly called on the district to fire Wyatt and others responsible for the handling of the case. Wyatt, in remarks to KPCC that further stoked the outcry, said it was a more dangerous decision to cross a street with oncoming traffic than to have sex with a teacher. He issued an apology to the student and her family Thursday, saying that his remarks were "ill thought out and poorly articulated" and did not represent the district.

from CBS News......

Has Media Ignored Sex Abuse In School?

John Karr isn't a priest. He's a teacher.

Most teachers are dedicated, hard-working people who wouldn't dream of hurting a child. The same is true of priests.

If the suspect in the 1996 murder of JonBenet Ramsey were a priest, there would be a fresh outcry about a decades-long cover-up in the Catholic Church. Commentators from Left and Right would rightly unite in decrying the crisis and the entrenched complacency that led to it. Catholic pundits would take a special relish in pointing out that they agree: The Church had better get its act together.

Any institution that has allowed children to be harmed by predators deserves to be taken to task for it. No institution should get a pass. And no profession should get a pass. Not preachers, not priests — not even teachers.

Especially not teachers. And yet …

Consider the statistics: In accordance with a requirement of President Bush's No Child Left Behind Act, the Department of Education carried out a study of sexual abuse in the school system.

Hofstra University researcher Charol Shakeshaft looked into the problem, and the first thing that came to her mind when Education Week reported on the study were the daily headlines about the Catholic Church.

"[T]hink the Catholic Church has a problem?" she said. "The physical sexual abuse of students in schools is likely more than 100 times the abuse by priests."

So, in order to better protect children, did media outlets start hounding the worse menace of the school systems, with headlines about a "Nationwide Teacher Molestation Cover-up" and by asking "Are Ed Schools Producing Pedophiles?"

No, they didn't. That treatment was reserved for the Catholic Church, while the greater problem in the schools was ignored altogether.

The federal report said 422,000 California public-school students would be victims before graduation — a number that dwarfs the state's entire Catholic-school enrollment of 143,000.

Yet the 61 largest newspapers in California ran nearly 2,000 stories about sexual abuse in Catholic institutions, mostly concerning past allegations. During the same period, those newspapers ran four stories about the federal government's discovery of the much larger — and ongoing — abuse scandal in public schools.

Perhaps John Karr will help change that.

"Could JonBenet Ramsey murder suspect John Mark Karr get a job teaching in your community?" asked USA Today. Not any more, of course; but could a creepy pedophile who isn't all over Fox News get hired? Richard Dangel, a child psychologist in Dallas, told the paper, "Only about 4% of offenders get busted," he says. "The other 96% don't." Which means that background checks won't stop the vast majority of sex offenders.

A writer for The New York Times lurked online at pedophile chat rooms, and reported this summer about the chilling way pedophiles convince themselves that children want to have sex with them and insinuate themselves into the lives of children.

The Times' Kurt Eichenwald explained that pedophiles often discuss their personal lives. They come from all walks of life, but they like to speak about how close their jobs take them to children. "The most frequent job mentioned, however, was schoolteacher," he wrote. "A number of self-described teachers shared detailed observations about children in their classes, including events they considered sexual, like a second-grade boy holding his crotch during class."

The Department of Education report estimated that from 6 percent to 10 percent of all students in public schools would be victims of abuse before graduation — a staggering statistic.

Mr. Troll with the ridiculous rotating names:

There is child abuse in schools
There is child abuse in families
There is child abuse in community recreation clubs
There is child abuse in churches
There is child abuse in boy scouts

All abuse is horrible. Dan has chosen youth pastors to highlight the religious hypocrisy involved. So what? Dan doesn't actively "ignore" sex abuse in schools, he just choses topics that interest him, and church hypocrisy is one of them. Besides, this is SLOG!

Not sure why you chose to reprint an article on a school abuse trial - BTW I am also an attorney so I understand those issues as well....
19
@16: You conveniently forget that the teacher was convicted in CRIMINAL court, that the rules for civil proceedings are different, and that the school actually fired the lawyer who made that argument. So sorry, but you'll have to find something else to masturbate furiously to.
@17: Please stop posting that National Review article (written by a guy who writes for the National Catholic Register, no less) and then claiming that it originated from CBS. We've been over this before, and it's an opinion piece spouting vague platitudes and recklessly extrapolating from questionable numbers.

Rule #1 - Don't feed the trolls, Jaymz.
21
@20 - sorry.... I've been feeling SLOG chatty today!
22
@21 buahaha, I've been there! Just don't get yourself too worked up or anything. The trolls never care as much (or at all) as you want them to.
23
I haven't seen this particular service, but there is a very good use for a non-public photosharing site like this: confidentiality. Plenty of parents are iffy about pictures of their kids ending up on the web, so a private photo-sharing group would allow, for example, a youth group to take pictures of their retreat and post them for others in the group to see without making them widely available on Facebook.

WHAT?!

Didn't they background check him!

"Masteller knew the victim through his positions as coach, court documents show."

from Slate....

How Many Kids Are Sexually Abused by Their Teachers?

Probably millions.

Los Angeles police are investigating a teacher aide at Miramonte Elementary School who allegedly sent love letters to an 11-year-old student. The student’s mother discovered the letters in 2009, but she says police and school officials didn’t take the matter seriously until last week, when two other teachers at the same school were arrested for sexually abusing students in separate cases. Is sexual abuse in schools really as common as these reports make it seem?

Possibly. The best available study suggests that about 10 percent of students suffer some form of sexual abuse during their school careers. In the 2000 report, commissioned by the American Association of University Women, surveyors asked students between eighth and 11th grades whether they had ever experienced inappropriate sexual conduct at school. The list of such conduct included lewd comments, exposure to pornography, peeping in the locker room, and sexual touching or grabbing. Around one in 10 students said they had been the victim of one or more such things from a teacher or other school employee, and two-thirds of those reported the incident involved physical contact. If these numbers are representative of the student population nationwide, 4.5 million students currently in grades K-12 have suffered some form of sexual abuse by an educator, and more than 3 million have experienced sexual touching or assault. This number would include both inappropriate romantic relationships between teachers and upperclassmen, and outright pedophilia.

@19: Come on. If you had but one free hand you'd be inclined to cut and paste too.

Hey Dan, could you please consolidate all these youth pastor watches at one URL; it would be a really helpful rebuttal to bullshit like this: http://www.americanthinker.com/articles/…
