Irradiated smoked turkey (копченая индейка), thermostabilized candied yams, freeze-dried green beans and mushrooms, freeze-dried cornbread dressing, and thermostabilized cherry-blueberry cobbler for dessert: today's dinner in space.

Astronauts can snarf without gaining a pound. Ha-ha-happy Thanksgiving, Sloggers.

Dan, I feel your pain about P.D. James. For anyone who enjoys language, Thanksgiving will be a little more glum this year.

The Wounded Knee Massacre occurred on December 29, 1890, near Wounded Knee Creek (Lakota: Čhaŋkpé Ópi Wakpála) on the Lakota Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in the U.S. state of South Dakota. On the day before, a detachment of the U.S. 7th Cavalry Regiment commanded by Major Samuel M. Whitside intercepted Spotted Elk's band of Miniconjou Lakota and 38 Hunkpapa Lakota near Porcupine Butte and escorted them five miles westward (8 km) to Wounded Knee Creek, where they made camp.

The remainder of the 7th Cavalry Regiment arrived, led by Colonel James W. Forsyth and surrounded the encampment supported by four Hotchkiss guns.

On the morning of December 29, the troops went into the camp to disarm the Lakota. One version of events claims that during the process of disarming the Lakota, a deaf tribesman named Black Coyote was reluctant to give up his rifle, claiming he had paid a lot for it. A scuffle over Black Coyote's rifle escalated and a shot was fired which resulted in the 7th Cavalry's opening fire indiscriminately from all sides, killing men, women, and children, as well as some of their own fellow soldiers. The Lakota warriors who still had weapons began shooting back at the attacking soldiers, who quickly suppressed the Lakota fire. The surviving Lakota fled, but U.S. cavalrymen pursued and killed many who were unarmed.

By the time it was over, at least 150 men, women, and children of the Lakota had been killed and 51 were wounded (4 men, 47 women and children, some of whom died later); some estimates placed the number of dead at 300. Twenty-five soldiers also died, and 39 were wounded (6 of the wounded would later die). At least twenty soldiers were awarded the Medal of Honor. In 2001, the National Congress of American Indians passed two resolutions condemning the awards and called on the U.S. government to rescind them.The site of the battlefield has been designated a National Historic Landmark.

Yes, I AM going to eat turkey! The turkeys I raised for the last 9 months and dispatched last weekend. They are going to be delicious and I can't wait :D

Awesome read. Thanks. But FYI, you're probably new to Slog. Many of the super pleasant liberal folks around here talk of the fly-over states as "backward" "stupid" "clueless" - it's quite admirable to see this display of tolerance and openness. South Dakota of which you speak is in the fly-over states. The fly-overs begin around St. Louis and continue until California.

What's your point? That the US isn't a candidate for historical sainthood? Congratulations. Your Medal of Honor from the Academy of the blindingly obvious for the discovery of the nose on your face is in the mail.

Yes bad things happen in wars of conquest. Yes, the weaker side loses, and must deal with the loss. But with the nonsense of treaties and the errant lunacy of dual sovereignty the US treated tribal people far better than most of histories losers.

Meanwhile, America has been on balance an inspiration and a force for good for most of our history. Warts and all, errors and all you should give thanks for your luck being born here.

Happy Thanksgiving from a citizen of the greatest nation on earth.

P.D. James? Alas.

@6: "But with the nonsense of treaties and the errant lunacy of dual sovereignty the US treated tribal people far better than most of histories losers."
You're displaying yet again your utter ignorance of history.

@8 But but, Subhumanblues scanned a few chapters of a couple of Sociology text booked scrapped together a few credit hours and a 1.75 grade point average to earn an Associates Degree in Sociology from a Community College making Subhumanblues an expert in everything.
10
Whatever. Enjoy your cranberry pies (which sounds intriguing as a recipe fwiw) and Happy Thanksgiving Junior.

@9

Even for you I can muster the goodwill to wish you a pleasant Thanksgiving. Hopefully you'll be more rational with whomever you dine than you are here. Or at least the people you're sharing the day with are as crazy as you...

Now if you'll excuse me I have family to prepare for and the chance to watch the Niners lose a game of football.

@10: It's a Smitten Kitchen recipe. It's something my mom tipped me off to; this woman who lives in a NYC matchbox apartment with her husband and son takes all these recipes, puts new twists on them, and does some really nice photography of the results.

There you are again infantilizing people who disagree with you. You know that is a classic trait of bigots and oppressors, right? You know it makes you sounds like a hateful bigot and makes it impossible for you to have any effect on the hearts and minds of the people you are speaking to? Or is the point of your presence here to spread hate and not to help us all see that we have made wrong choices in our philosophies?
15
"@sb was obviously who that was for.
16
Wattles, not waddles.
17
@16: Shit. Thanks. Fixed.

18
Thanks for the roundup. We'll spread the word.

@12 It would be nice if the current members of that "grand civilization" who still profit from the "dreadful deeds" of their ancestors to this day were at all inclined to help compensate the ongoing victims of those same "dreadful deeds." But they're not. They're happy to reap the rewards of the sins of their fathers, while simultaneously screaming that those sins aren't theirs to pay for.

1 in 6 Brits celebrates Thanksgiving? Hell no. Probably not even 1 in 6000. A few American ex pats and the word of a supermarket - that mostly only exists in the vacuum of the south of the country - isn't going to convince me. I'm also hearing from Blighty that trick or treat has finally died out over there. That was a short-lived abomination that deserved to die.

SB; Greatest Nation on Earth? People walking round with guns. Cops shooting 12 yr olds at a park. You guys sure have done some amazing things, no doubt. Some real crazy people and laws abound though.
Happy Thanksgiving to you SB. May you wake up tomorrow and not be one of the crazies, anymore.
23
Denmark has skipped the silly thankfulness thing and gone straight to adopting Black Friday.
24
@12: I'm not making judgments as to whether the USA is worth it. I can simultaneously hold in my head the concepts that we are a nation built on great ideas and many rich cultural identities, and also that we are a nation that has unblinkingly committed atrocities during its history.
25
Fuck the puritans!
26
@24 You crazy VL next you'll be telling us a coin has both a head side and a tail side.
27
@19

wow, such insight and eloquence.

now, are you in 10th grade or 11th grade this year?

man, the youngsters these days, educating us with such unique thought. A Savage fan no doubt. Slog's future looks bright.
28
@21, "harnessing the resources of a continent to create vast wealth." You mean like fracking?
29
I'd forgotten how good the Adams Family movie was.
30
M? Trust - Ms James wrote deep and thoughtful books, but I'm not sure that, given her record in the House of Lords, Mr Savage is having a sad in her favour.

Please wait...
