As a native Midwesterner, I am torn, for I am rather fond of the Green Bay Packers. But I hope the Seahawks win. I don't care much for football, but it was sort of fun last year when they went to the Super Bowl. After all, who doesn't love a parade?
I'm at Buckleys Queen Anne for this one but I'll be following you Spike. Roughly 1/3 Packers fans here who are about to be severely disappointed. Go Hawks!
Spike
I was gonna liveslog it from Chicago too! OK with the competition? Prolly too late for the At Risk Youth who run tech at Slog to put us both on one widget.
Bill
Spike, however unlikely, Seattle can come back. Green Bay will start playing prevent defense, giving up points, and then running on offense to kill clock. It ain't over, but it doesn't look good.
Hey, Pats came back from 14 down twice, you guys can do this! The offense needs to get going so that the defense doesn't have short fields every time, and the defense needs to make a big takeaway somewhere.
Yeah, this is brutal. I'm not a huge Hawks fan (originally from Pittsburgh, so am secure in my hometown team's established dominance) but sure do hate a blowout, regardless of who's doing the, uh, blowing. Any idea why chancellor didn't try his leapfrog thing on that packer FG there? Would've seemed to be the time for it.
Spike, are you rooting for Green Bay now? To justify your earlier posts? Come on. Seattle can score a touchdown and be only 9 down. That's incredible, and it would be because of those early red zone stops that kept Green Bay to field goals.
Having fun tweeting @rogersparkman about this game! Already had to block a follower who was being a dick about my game interpretation. Ah, anti-social media!
1. Go Pack Go! Aaron Rodgers is a wizard. This is what you get when you fight a wizard.
2. Not using Charles Mudede for a football game Liveslog was a monumental mistake. Sure, he would have hated it, but it probably would have been the greatest post in the history of Slog.
@39: It's poetic in its horror: "Violence surges in my heart." At first I thought he called it too early, but he's seeing the meltdown in ways that casual fans, like me, can't see. What he means by "love the meltdown" is that to really, truly enjoy the wins, a true fan needs to suffer the loses. And I'm a Cubs fan, so I think I know what I'm talking about, except I don't know what it means to win.
Hoping the defense can get the offense started. I'm not drunk enough for this game. Fuck this. I hate football. I hate the Seahawks as only one who loves the Seahawks can hate them
Just keep repeating "second half team" and clap your hands reeeeal hard and maybe it will come true.
Seattle holds GB to 3 and out. If they can strike fast here, and then pick off a too-cocky Rodgers for a defense touchdown, suddenly everything changes. Time to close eyes and click heels together... @43 has the right spirit. Go Seahawks!!!
@42 My apologies to the poet. I was lashing out at inanimate objects when I should have been chasing penguins. Now, where's my Nerf Club and Nerf Baby Seal?
@49: that's correct. The ONLY downside is if you get a TD, 7, and then a FG, you're tied instead of ahead by 1, but that's still a fine result, and the possibility of only being down 1 score vastly outweighs.
@71, soccer used to have a "golden goal" rule but they got rid of it. They might bring it back for the World Cup in 2018. Hockey still has it. The NFL has always had it in the playoffs, and in the regular season since 1974.
When the Packers flubbed that onside kick leading to a Seahawk touchdown, that reminded me of the missed ground ball by Bill Buckner in the 86 world series with 2 out in the 9th in game 6 w/ a 3-2 game lead for the Bosox which lead to the flood gate of hits leading to a Mets win followed by a game 7 win. Not to take anything away from the talented Seahawks, but this appears to be one of those charmed seasons where every thing falls in the right place when you least expect it.
@75, no, they had to score a TD (not a field goal) on their first possession. As the rest of this game demonstrates, that's not easy to do. And they did it with stunning authority. Green Bay were terrific but they only played 58 minutes.
And, as I said, the NFL has always been this way in the playoffs.
@80: And you can't say that the Packers wouldn't have done the same. You can't. The way it should work is another 4th quarter followed by opposing field goal shots at incrementally increasing distances. That way each team has an equal chance and the fucking coin has nothing to do with it. All that we know from this game is that the coin gave Seattle the first chance and they scored. We don't know and will never know if the Packers would have scored if they were given the ball. The rule is fucking stupid.
@81: If the packers had driven the field and scored a TD at the end of regulation, they'd have won. Instead, Seattle drove the field for a TD, and won.
I got the impression in the last few minutes that the gravity of the situation got to the Packers---The pass coverage which was super tight in the first half got looser later on as if their DB's developed lead in their legs; On the two point conversion, the Pack defense looked more interested in watching the catch than they did in stopping it. And on the offensive side of the ball in the later minutes, they got too conservative when this game was still in reach for the Seahawks and did not make aggressive attempts to get the ball down the field through the air and hoped to run out the clock with running plays even if they weren't working.
Your proposal would still heavily favor whichever team wound up on offense first. Probably the only fair system would be to play two shortened (7 or 8 minute?) periods, which at least guarantees each team the chance to be on the receiving end of a kickoff. I kinda like it! (And best of luck to you in attempting to convince Budweiser guzzling Midwesterners to allow playoff games to be decided solely by placekickers, though I can appreciate the sentiment there as well.)
@81, I'm trying to think of a way of deciding a tied football game that would be more boring than your alternating field goal attempts, but I can't.
@97, that might be pushing it a little, but we're getting close. The Patriots from a decade ago ('04-'05) are still ahead of us. But it's harder to be consistently great now than it was even then.
@ 97, you know, if there is no such thing as the 70s Steelers or 80s 49ers... Or the early 00's Patriots. At best you'll be as good as the 90s Broncos. ONLY if you win next week.
How about teams line up alternately for one single play at their own one yard line and the defense is responsible for forcing a safety? Each team gets the same number of tries.

Hmmm. i think we's was maybe wrong maybe.
"3:33: That is the greatest moment of my life."
I hope this is not true.

Aside: now drunk enough. SEA-HAWKS!
Never mind the Seahawks getting to the point where overtime was required, right?
