It's hard to believe America was born on freedom from religious persecution.
2
Until you actually know what happened, it may be a bit premature to claim the cop was harassing them. It is ok to wait until you have the facts before you post stuff. I doubt you are going to get scooped here.
3
@2:

For once I have to stand up for Charles, since he isn't the one claiming harassment; that's being done by the eye-witnesses to what transpired. Charles is simply reporting what they claimed to have seen.
4
Yesterday was Feb. 22. Today is Feb. 23.
5
But you have to admit that the sign "I'm a Muslim. People Label Me A Terrorist. If You trust Me, Give Me a Hug," is pretty strange. Not really very clear. Sure it's legal. But odd.

But go ahead. Do your thing Charles and follow up on the story.
6
@3: Just because one person says something doesn't mean you automatically print it. Totally irresponsible.
7
Why do cops even need to be asking people what these people were doing? Do they not have something more important to do? Also, do they interrogate any of the street performers around Pike Place Market?
8
I see the typo, can't fix it unfortunately.
9
The ONLY good thing about this situation (and story) is this:

"Christenson's confrontation with the Muslims at Pike Place Market ended."
11
@7 " Also, do they interrogate any of the street performers around Pike Place Market?"

Street performers in Pike Place Market are required to have a permit. Perform without one and Market Security will promptly ask you to leave.
12
@11 the article says that they were on the public sidewalk. The most important question here is, "Was the contact by the police legal to begin with?"
13
Performers require permits because they are soliciting crowds for compensation. What wrong did they commit? Or is this a police state where it's guilty until proven innocent?
14
@10

Every time someone says that to Sam Harris his panties get all twisted, but you're right about him there.
15
@12
Not weighing in on the situation, but most of the market is actually not public land, not even the street or sidewalk. Pike Place (the street) is legally a driveway. The only sidewalk in the Market that is actually public land is 1st avenue. That is why people can be trespassed from the Market entirely.
16
@11

Do they typically ask unlicensed performers to leave by calling the SPD?
17
Agreed with Joe @12.

Also, this is a re-creation/expansion of a social experiment that was widely seen last month via this video out of Toronto. This was not a random performance act.

And while the idea straddles the activism/performance-art line, it is obviously not the kind of enterprise for which busking permits were invented, but rather a clear political action and protected speech.
18
@13
Basically the Market is like a bar; you dont have to be doing something illegal to get 86'd. It's possible a business owner simply thought that these guys were bad for business. Kind of a lame possibility, given what these two were doing, but still a possibility.
19
"Was the contact by the police legal to begin with?"

"Contact?" as in cops talking to citizens? That's not allowed now? Sheesh.

We should be encouraging cops to engage in conversation.
20
@16, I guess we'll have to wait and see if Charles follows up.
21
"I believe that you are not a terrorist but I also believe that your religion is a mysogynistic cult of ignorance based on an inherently violent text."

@10
That would make a great poster.
I'll hug you if you carry it in the market.
22
@15 yep. Based on the photo, this looks like they were standing in front of the florist on the northeast corner of Pike Place & 1st, which would be the public sidewalk. Assuming that's where they were at, that's one of our Magical Free Speech Type Zones.
23
@19
"Was the contact by the police legal to begin with?"

"Contact?" as in cops talking to citizens? That's not allowed now? Sheesh.

We should be encouraging cops to engage in conversation.

They can talk to anyone all day and I wish they would do it more. Asking for ID is 100% different.

The SPD asked for ID, got in their faces, threatened to mail a ticket.

If these guys were standing with their sign on the public sidewalk, the biggest questions are:

1. What was the legal authority and basis for asking for their IDs?
2. What was the legal authority and basis for threatening a ticket?
24
Charles, if you're reading these, that's the stuff to ask SPD, the Chief's office, and Mayor Murray's office.
25
@18 I don't doubt for a second that some bigot complained. It's just crazy that anyone would respond to it. The article's title could have just as easily been "Some Asshole Called the Police on Young Muslims Offering Hugs at Pike Place Market"
26
Silly behavior always serves as fodder for silly posts.
28
Only performers who are asking for compensation (tips) have to be licensed. Instead, this looks like a free speech issue.
29
It's an ongoing prank
uh
just trim ya all nails and wait
bait
spaghetti on my hoodie
dig in and spate
crank
uh yeah
egging it on
got it what's left and wrong
with the bag
30
@6:

And just because one person says something, doesn't mean it didn't happen the way they said it did, particularly when it involves, in this instance, a LEO who has already demonstrated poor judgement in previously reported incidents. Given the ongoing history of over-response, harassment, & general escalation by SPD in their interactions with the public, this certainly has relevance, as it may yet be another in an ever lengthening list of examples of such abuse of authority on their part.

And FWIW, I think we're way past the point of needing to re-argue your premise. This is a blog, and they can print whatever they bloody well want to print.
31
Pike Place Market has a free speech zone for this kind of activity. The officers calmly requested the men to move to the free speech zone, but they refused. The guys were blocking the sidewalk in what we all know is a very crowded place. In the end, the officers backed off and let them continue blocking the space. The Market is regulated by historic district rules, thus the designated free speech area.
32
@23: I've asked SPD these and other questions. Thanks.
33
I've seen white dorks offering free hugs down there without getting any flak from the cops. Maybe the cop was just pissy because Muslims consider pigs to be filthy.
34
@25
I wouldn't say that the business owner would have to be a bigot to object. He could just think that these guys were weirding out his customers or something.
@31 I forgot about that! There is a "Speaker's Corner" right by the news-stand on 1st ave. People cant play music there, you are only allowed to deliver speeches. I've heard that it actually used to be a thing.
35
I was standing right there for the whole thing. literally 3 feet from the officer and the young men. The thing seems to take a negative turn when the officer repeat to question one male who didn't seem comfortable in speaking with him, so the other young man did the talking… the officer began to get upset the male wasn't comfortable speaking (he goaded the young man in an intimidating manner) then accuse him of being racist against him because he is asian as the reason he wouldn't speak to him. everyone within listening distance heard the officer make this false accusation and the crowd began to get upset. one woman in specific was very vocal in backing the young men. there were tons of people in the street doing what tourists and street performers do… but the officer had a specific issue with these young men. I have some video of it but my video pretty much picks up where the officer accuses him of being racist and doesn't show all the antagonizing behavior the officer exhibited before that.
36
It's great living in Soviet America
37
My brownskinned granddaughter was at Westlake giving out free hugs, blindfolded. I venture to guess, because she was accompanied by others, mostly Caucasian..no one was suspect of her.
Awww..the lovely world we live in.
Kudos to the folks who spoke on their behalf.
38
Strange, my comment @10 was removed. No profanity, no racism, just standard 1A protected speech. The same thing that this post ostensibly deals with.
39
@38 the First Amendment doesn't apply to websites. It only restricts United States governments from infringing on your right to speech in the public realm. You got no rights here.
40
@37
Obviously nothing wrong with giving out "free hugs" but seems to me that there's something sorta "off" about it....just kinda trying too hard, kinda phony. I don't believe it.
41
That poor, unbalanced, deformed looking cop. Someone should put him in a jar so future generations could laugh at him.
42
@39, of course. But my comment simply mentioned the anti-woman, anti-progressive nature of the religion in question. In throttling this comment is The Stranger supporting these tenets, or is it just too scared to confront the elephant in the room? How does The Stranger feel about this religion's track record on LGBT issues? I simply stated that these gents should be allowed to say what they want in public but that I still feel that their religion, like pretty much every religion out there, is horseshit.
43
Why was Paul Constant fired?
44
Charles, this post is very unlike you. As much I disagreed with some of your stuff, it always seemed like it was written by a philosopher, and not a reporter. This seems like it was written by a reporter. Not that it's bad per say, I just hope you can keep doing your thing
45
Was in fact Paul Constant fired? I thought I just saw his byline a day or so ago.

46
I was thinking that the misogynistic and violent religion must be Christianity. Our culture is certainly more inundated by the insanity of so called Christians than Muslims. Read the old testament lately? Sheesh....you Christian hypocrits.
47
@46 so only one religion is allowed to be categorized as violent? What part of my saying "I still feel that their religion, like pretty much every religion out there, is horseshit." makes you think I'm Christian?
48
@46
Read the newspaper and see which religion is motivating murder.
49
Another non-issue whipped up by The Stranger. Folks, Pike Place Market has a "Free Speech" area where annoying bullshit like this can take place.

These assholes came down specifically to incite and bother, and they succeeded.

Fuck 'em.

I don't care if they are Hare Krishnas or well dressed Mormon boys. annoying people in a public place like that just proves that they are douche bags..

50
LOOKS LIKE O toole is doing a bangup job of booting the SPD bigots and trouble makers.

As smarter people than I (Michelle Alexander, for example) have said, YOU CANT TRAIN AWAY RACISM AND HATE in law enforcement. You can only train them to hide it temporarily or cover for them when it comes out.

This isnt the last story involving Officer Christensen abusing a person of color. MARK IT.
51
@49

I know right. Those cops were, like always, just looking for brown and black people to harass, and potentially brutalize, as we all know the SPD makes a name for itself doing (See: Officer Christensen, Officer Whitlatch, Officer Birk, Officer Cobain, Officer Dornay, Officer O Neil, Officer Pomper...the 128 Officer who wanted to sue for the right to racially profile and abuse by skin color....am I forgetting anyone else? Oh, the rest of the SPD)

...Oh wait, you were talking about the Muslim men. Way to troll Officer!
52
-Last thought:

Ive been downtown THOUSANDS of times. Seen all kinds of random sign holders, street performers and artists, and just odd people. 99% are white. NEVER ONCE seen an SPD officer so much as second look them.

Yet, seen a black or hispanic ( and now apparently muslims) person doing anything, from minding their own business to 'street performing' is a 100% GUARANTEE that the SPD will engage, harass, threaten, and possibly assault.

But please, tell us all how "theyre just doing their jobs, all people of color are dangerous criminals...especially those not breaking any law minding their own business!"
53
That's what they get for thinking America is Canada. When this was done in Canada, Canadians either walked by or most of them just gave the Muslims a hug. Some even stopped their cars and got out to give the guys a hug.

Please wait...
